One thing most of these reviewers have not mentioned because they never took the time to do it was that they need to be played for a while first. They do NOT sound great out of the box. However, after about 40 hours of burn in (playing them loud under a blanket for a while) time, these are really great sounding speakers. No, they dont have the greatest bass extension, so for people that mix bass heavy (Hip hop, electronic)music, they might have some trouble mixing their tracks if used for recording purposes, like me. I would definitely recommend some Auralex MoPads or something to tighten the bass and minimize desktop vibrations. Stands or the (sold separately)wall mounts are also good alternatives. Most drivers do require burn in and these absolutely do, but after the necessary steps, you get a true representation of recorded audio plus they look kinda cool for cheap speakers. I think these monitors are a heck of a deal for the money. Perfect spacesavers!!

I picked these up after some prodding from the sales guy and the fact that they were out of the M-Audio AV40's I had originally wanted. Having only about $300 in my pocket at the time(I bought an SM57 as well), I figured it sounded like a reasonable buy. After hooking them up, however, I was left with INTENSE amounts of treble, horrible bass response, and a deficit of cash. Be warned: if you would like to buy good monitors on a budget, these are NOT the way to go.

Really, from JBL?

By DSoundGuy

Comments about JBL Control 2P Compact Powered Monitor System:

I am an audio mix engineer for an audio company in Virginia.I needed to set up a mixing station at my home. Thought these would be a good buy. I have used JBL products for over thirty years and love them. However, these things are just bad. The bottom end is way overstated! Muddy sounding junk in my opinion. Don't buy them!

Comments about JBL Control 2P Compact Powered Monitor System:

Got home with these babies with visions of how great they would sound. Plugged them in and turned them on and....nothing. All they gave me was a return trip to the store and a load of disappointment. Now that is some wonderful quality control.

A disgrace to a respectable brand.

Comments about JBL Control 2P Compact Powered Monitor System:

6 minutes... that was the amount of time I let a horribly dull sound of these speakers torture my ears. To be fair, they are handily equipped with an "off" button which most of the users will find astonishingly convenient and sudden in response. It is conveniently located behind the left speaker and, yes, it will stop the pain.

Small&Mighty

Comments about JBL Control 2P Compact Powered Monitor System:

You can find more powerful, bigger, heavier speakers but these are the lightest, smallest you can get for the money-period. The connection, power, portability, quality and sound for the money can't be beat. If you wan't a pair of really small computer speaks that can be used for recording, playback, and even keyboard, guitar, bass, vocals, these are for you. They are a little toppy but are adjustable via a three-way switch for tweeter control. A volume and headphone jack are also provided, Low-Z/High-Z and RCA's are standard,as is an on/off switch for the remote power supply. The cons are that the extention speaker has spring terminals[1/4" would be nice] and the power-up/down causes a noticable "pop"[soft start-up/shut-down circuitry would also be nice] If a mic socket and more power were to be added, this could also be used as a live near-field monitor.

Compact Power

By gamjamm-QEZwS

from Havre De Grace,Md.

Comments about JBL Control 2P Compact Powered Monitor System:

These sound great as playback, mix monitors, or with my keyboard. Fairly flat responce, very clear but maybe a little toppy. You can adjust the highs with a 3-way switch( 0db or +/-2db). I use these on the control out of my board and have used various vocal mikes, instruments, etc. with good results. Your not going to get sub-style bass from the 5" woofers nor should it be expected but bass responce is surprisingly full and punchy through the ported cabs. These are Small and compact. Great for desktop mixing and computer based apps. The only con is that it does not have a soft-start feature and you get a startup pop when you turn them on no matter if all volumes are down or not. Overall a great value.

Better than Nothing

Comments about JBL Control 2P Compact Powered Monitor System:

These are pretty bad speakers if you are trying to get an accurate mix. The bass response is terrible and the highs are very shrilly. It's pretty muddy sounding overall. However if this is all you can afford, or if you just want to listen to some music not on crappy laptop speakers, i GUESS these are ok.

Fantastic performance for smaller applications!

Comments about JBL Control 2P Compact Powered Monitor System:

I picked these up for my small recording setup in my apartment. I got tired of trying to mix down with headphones, as the final mix always sounded poor and treble-heavy in lesser-quality speakers and headphones. I'm not worried about blasting the room down, I just wanted something that lets me hear my recordings as they really sound. There's no fooling these monitors; if you're project is poorly done, you're going to hear it! They have everything I need ? crisp, accurate response in a manageable and compact package. The highs and mids sing, and bass is surprisingly responsive, given the size. JBL went ahead and put all their effort into these monitors as well. Weight isn't always the best judge of quality, but when you hold these little speakers, you know they are built well. They get loud (up to 115 db in pair) and I have yet to peak them, but If you're wanting to blast your face off, these monitors won't do it. On the other hand, if you want practical size without sacrificing quality (and you know JBL delivers quality), then the Control 2P should definitely be at the top of your list. Plus they look snazzy!

Great speakers if you break them in.

Comments about JBL Control 2P Compact Powered Monitor System:

The other guy that wrote the other review was RIGHT! Break these in, and they sound great! Out of the box, I plugged em' up, tested them out and at first, was NOT impressed. After jamming a number of different applications through these speakers, they seemed to start sounding a bit better. Honestly at first, I was like,"Uuuuuugh!" But now, I LOVE them! After reading goosehead's review,"Break in your speakers folks", I saw the light! But, let me tell you how I broke in MY speakers fast. Metallica rockin' at a high volume for about 4 hours WILL do the trick! There is no other diverse array of pounding depth and punching tone that could compare to those delivered by Metallica Albums. I recommend Death Magnetic. So, pound it through your speakers loudly for a while, and break in those puppies. Now I feel like I got a great deal! Especially since I bought a re-stock pair for $50 off! Best bang for your buck right here. Oh, and don't forget to turn the Treble dB Gain switch "UP" while breaking them in.

Comments about JBL Control 2P Compact Powered Monitor System:

As a lifetime high end and audiophile technician and sales consultant I shudder when any conversation starts out "I am an engineer...". You know what's coming. I find from years of reviewing and reading reviews that unrealistic expectations are responsible for the majority of bad reviews. First, because a product is not right for one doesn't mean is not right for all. Second, Stuff breaks and is defective, its electronics. Even $5000 amplifiers fail. I raised four kids and had a great lifestyle based on that reality. Third, slow shipping, poor packing etc. have nothing to do with the product. and last, you have choices usually based on what you can or want to spend. My grandfather used to say "Single Malt taste with a beer wallet". Have realistic expectations. Price does figure into reasonable expectations. I am a laptop musician and these speakers are great for the price and size. I use them with a subwoofer because based on size and specs the low end would be cut off fairly high. I stuck them in the garage and blasted AC/DC on repeat into moving blankets and they improved significantly. Audiophiles consider "Burning in" as necessary for most audio gear. I love the feel of these speakers, the rubber exterior, weight and controls speak quality. The input options are versatile. I use these with my Steinberg interface and iPad dock for home recording. I do tons of drum work, usually with "Superior Drummer" and live drums and percussion and these sound fantastic. Crisp highs, punchy mids and the sub handles the cutoff at 125hz. Are there better studio monitors? Absolutely, but for what I can justify for my needs, these are awesome for the investment.

Solid product at a great price. A bit stiff sounding out of the box, but they really loosen up after being broken in. They have a dedicated job on a small board, serving a broad spectrum of inputs from balanced, unbalanced, and hi-fi, and sound like JBL: If you plug nice equipment in, you get nice sound out. Get 'em.

When I first connected these monitors I thought I was going to be extremely dissapointed. They were a bit flaky at times (the extension speaker would be choppy) which might have been due to a simple poor connection. There is also a slight electronic buzzing sound which you can hear if you listen close, which happens rarely. These speakers benefit GREATLY from a break-in period. Once broken in, they are very clear and precise and loud.
