Comments about Mackie VLZ4 Series 402VLZ4 4-Channel Ultra Compact Mixer:

I thought it would be a safe purchase so I bought two. I use the 402vlz4 for monitoring my electric bass w/headphones while I practice and play to tracks sent to me for collaboration or covers for learning purposes.

The number 1 and 2 channel inputs on both mixers just stopped working. So, I called Loud Technologies and they replaced both quickly and with no problems. Excellent customer service! Sadly, both replacement mixers lost channels 1 and 2 input for instruments.

The problem seems to arise when you leave an open (no instrument/mic) 1/4 inch cable plugged into the mixer channel 1 or 2 when turning the mixer off, and then turn the mixer back on later, the channel that the cable is plugged into just stops working all together.

I have a hunch that it's the quality of the production that is the problem; just my 2 cents. I'm not doing anything unusual with the mixer - I have decades of electronic audio signal path experience. So for whatever it's worth that's my experience with the 403VLZ4. Otherwise it's an ok for my particular use (described above).

Comments about Mackie VLZ4 Series 402VLZ4 4-Channel Ultra Compact Mixer:

I am using this mixer in my bedroom studio, with my Mac computer. I am running the main outputs, to a stereo 1/8th inch into the line in on the computer. The onyx preamps in this mixer sound great. If you don't need a lot of inputs or outputs, need multitrack recording, or need anything bigger.. This mixer homework fantastic for you. I can also see this working well for small gigs.

The quick and speedy shipping from musicians friend is always appreciated. You definitely can't go wrong with this little mixer if you need something this small.

Comments about Mackie VLZ4 Series 402VLZ4 4-Channel Ultra Compact Mixer:

I bought this to use on stage, to mix a 1/4" input from my guitar pedal with the XLR input from an instrument mic. I occasionally put another 1/4" through one side of the stereo channel to run some percussion. I'm a front man, and I park my little Mackie on a mini-music stand clamped to my mic stand.

I love this thing! The sound is pure and quiet, the controls are simple and precise. It's durable enough that it's been riding around in a gear bag for nearly a year without any problems. It gives me pinpoint control of the instruments in situations where the sound guy is off eating a hot dog, or where I just want to tweak something without bugging him.

We also use it in the studio now and then, and it's always been flawless.

The only thing I would have liked is an XLR out. Can't have everything.

Comments about Mackie VLZ4 Series 402VLZ4 4-Channel Ultra Compact Mixer:

Mackie has made their name on some great mixers in the past but this one fails sonicly and it is a curious coincidence that the name Mackie doesn't appear anywhere on this product (only the logo does). It has the solid Mackie build (though the volume knobs are loose) and, as usual, the unit is noise free and the manual is top notch. It may sound fine to other people and suit their purposes but I intended to use if as a recording input and it was a dissapointment when compared to my Alesis multimix mixer. This Mackie sounded thin and less warm/analog.
