Comments about MXL R144 Ribbon Microphone:

This microphone is good for the price, despite early issues. I purchased the mic to run straight in to a Yamaha tape cassette four track (MT-50). The mic does not require a preamp for medium volume applications in this setup. The rejection pattern helps with unwanted environmental noise. Vocals with this mic sound fair, but it shines on a fairly low volume guitar amp. Bass is somewhat boomy depending on placement.

When I first got the mic it did not work, and I disassembled it in the hopes of fixing it. I made no changes, but after reassembling the mic functioned as intended.

Suggesting it lasts a year or so I will likely re-buy, but at this point reliability can't be gauged.

Comments about MXL R144 Ribbon Microphone:

This is probably the worst ribbon microphone I have ever purchased. With the enticing price you are getting maybe poor quality mic. Poor sound quality, lots of pops, lots of cracks. I would personally never recommend this brand ever for any object that they sell. This mic never has done what I intended for it, It doesn't even do the most basic of recordings

    Unique Sound

    By Rob Richards

Comments about MXL R144 Ribbon Microphone:

You MUST use a double pop filter with this thing. MXL should include one with this mic package. Nice tonal punch, sounds great even with average preamp. It does have a very sensitive source range, making it somewhat difficult to control vocal levels, not something you would ever want to use in a live applicaiton for vocals, but for recording it is above average if you can maintain levels. Ribbon mics have a very distinct coloration that are perfect for backing vocals. Nice addition to my locker.

    Not too bad

    By DanCollinsandaPiano

Comments about MXL R144 Ribbon Microphone:

I needed something to record sax with, and I probably shouldn't be writing this review seeing as I have yet to record sax with it... haha. Anyway, I HAVE used it on a high hat and inside a piano in collaboration with a stereo pair. Both applications sounds decent. Crank the gain up, as with most ribbons. One thing that did irk me a bit was that the case that it came in broke within 2 or 3 times opening/closing it... cheap. Whatever, not a terrible product but it isn't wowing me yet.

    Good Addition to your collection

    By JDM

Comments about MXL R144 Ribbon Microphone:

This mic sounds absolutely perfect on saxophones. Nice warm sound, very vintage. It's not so great on vocals compared to some slightly more expensive models. But, it has a distinct sound that could be useful in your collection of mics.

    Everyman's ribbon

    By Anonymous

Comments about MXL R144 Ribbon Microphone:

For those wanting the ribbon sound on a limited budget. A fine mic for most any purpose, really comes through on vocals and voiceovers. Make it sound phenomenal by running it through a mic strip or at the least a good preamp. Great build quality and at this price you can put several in your mic locker.
