Picked this up on SDOTD. Am I the only sucker for that promotion???? Nobody beats MF for those deals!
I wanted a classic-styled mic to compliment our look (I'm the frontman for our old time blues act). I normally use the SM58 but I was really interested in the visual here. My new purchase consideration also included the shure 55, but I couldn't justify that cost.
This one fits my need exactly. Its got a warm sound. It is built like a tank (solid metal), which is good, but don't expect to extend your boom stand out very far.
The cons (minor) are that its got a surprising small sweet spot that is close to the spot where the mesh meets the solid bottom. So when I'm singing, the mic kinda covers a lot of my face (maybe a good thing!). Lol! This small sweet spot seems to work in a positive way since I have not had any feedback issues at practice and at gigs. Another minor nitpick is that you'll need to provide your own padded pouch or something other for transport. A purple Crown Royal bag works great for my dust cover. Last minor issue is that when using the mic, I need to tilt the mic back about 45* degrees. This allows a typical mic XLR cable to stick out and to swag towards you when singing and playing a guitar. Often the cable will bend and poke you in the neck when you get in close. This is just because of the classic shape. I include this comment here since I am going to fix this issue by soldering on a 90* XLR connector to my mic cable which will route the mic cable back and out of the way.
It takes a little getting used to (regularly singing into the sweet spot) but I do love this mic!

It just isn't hot enough.

It's a BEAUTIFUL mic, and its vintage looks get just the exact stage flavor I want with my acoustic string band. And, don't get me wrong, it DOES sound very good!

But I guess after working with my MXL V900 for a few years now, I expected the V400 to have more or less the same kind of overall performance. But it just doesn't. I have to put my lips right on the mic - like it was the EV ND767 I sometimes use with occasional electric music gigs - before I get a strong enough response from it. But that response IS clean and easy to work with, if I have enough gain at the board.

Maybe I'm just doing something wrong; but I've been singing with bands for a living for more than 30 years, and I'm pretty sure I know by now how to work with a microphone.

I'll still use it on live bookings, and I'd still definitely recommend it, but I'm not sure I'd get another one if the one I have ever fails for some unforeseen reason.

Comments about MXL V400 Dynamic Microphone in a Vintage Style Body:

Being an avid MXL user, when this deal came up, I couldn't pass!! This mic has certainly earned a coveted place in my mic collection! I've used it for recording vocals, fantastic rich results! I have been having a local talk show host coming into my studio to record his own record, and he has a deep, rich, baritone voice. This mic captures every nuance of his performances with stunning clarity and warmth. Can't wait for this mic to go on sale again, I want another one!

Comments about MXL V400 Dynamic Microphone in a Vintage Style Body:

Bought this on SDOTD and it was a nice surprise. Feels sturdy in your hand, has a threaded base for other kinds of shock mounts and sounds great for vocals which is the only application I have used it in so far. Rejects feedback well with a little eq. Seems to have a bit more bottom mids than a beta 58 but a similar rise in the 5k. Nice clarity in spite of the mid bass thing you have to eq out on most systems. Total win at the price point.

Great sound, but it isn't practical

Comments about MXL V400 Dynamic Microphone in a Vintage Style Body:

This mic looks good. It sounds good. It's built well. It can be used for home or studio use because the sound is so warm and rich. HOWEVER, if you're even the slightest bit (and I mean the SLIGHTEST BIT) off of where you should be, it will drastically affect the sound. It's also a bit bulky and my mother said it looked phallic so that kind of throws me off when I try to use it.

    V400 Dynamic Microphone

Comments about MXL V400 Dynamic Microphone in a Vintage Style Body:

A good sounding dynamic microphone in a classic looking capsule. If it had a LF roll off I would give it a five. I got this on a deal of the day and the deal cant be beat. I am happy with this microphone and will definitely keep it.

Very Nice Mic At a Great Price

Comments about MXL V400 Dynamic Microphone in a Vintage Style Body:

I bought this mic with our lead singer in mind. He likes vintage style, and I thought the frequency response of this mic would warm up his vocals. Nailed it! He loves singing through this mic, and it sure has a beautiful style.

There is a downside, and it's only minor. This mic is a bit heavier than standard dynamic mics, so it would be best to mount this on a straight mic stand. That mans it's best use might be for someone who is doing vocals only. Our vocalist also plays the guitar, so he uses a boom stand. It still works, but you have to make sure the boom arm is pointed in the same direction as one of the legs of the stand. As long as that is done, evrything is quite stable.

Would I buy this mic again? Absolutely. As with any vocal mic, it needs to be paired with the right voice. If your vocalist could use a mic that warms the voice, this would be a great choice.

        Good looking, but can't deliver!

Comments about MXL V400 Dynamic Microphone in a Vintage Style Body:

I was not disappointed in the look of this microphone. When I plugged it in I was shocked at the sound that came out of it. I really wanted to like it, so messed around with e.q. for a few seconds, then laughed at myself for even trying to fix this.
