This is an excellent mic. The Beta57 has excellent off-axis noise rejection and it is my favorite vocal mic. We use it in a very loud rock band with loud monitor wedges and rarely have feedback (with a properly eq'd system) I have also used the Beta57 for recording vocals on demos and it sounds great. Works great on snare, guitar, even kick drum with the proper eq... And it is extremely tough with its hardened steel grill.
One of the reviews by travisposey from Alabama states that the sound is harsh and brittle and the mic does nothing but feedback. This guy must know absolutely nothing about setting up a sound system or about proper mic placement and usage. There are many factors that contribute to feedback - speaker placement, the way the performer uses the mic, and room acoustics play a huge role.
Pay no attention to the negative review. The Beta57 is a professional microphone. Highly recommended for almost any job you need it for.

This is one of the worst microphones I have ever owned for vocals. I normally use a Shure SM57 to sing through. I bought this one after seeing Greg Allman & Warren Haynes singing through one. I thought the tight Supercardioid pattern would help control feedback & bleed-over on a loud stage. All this thing could do is feedback, feedback, feedback. I do not recommend this for vocals. It is OK for instruments like guitar cabinets but is far from warm like the description says. It is very harsh & bright sounding.

Comments about Shure Beta 57A Microphone:
The Beta 57 is a workhorse of a mic. It has great off axis rejection which really helps in a loud rock band - and it can handle a screaming vocalist. I have used mine for almost every micing job you can think of except drum overhead (need condensers for that) I have 4 Beta 57s and two SM58s, and I prefer the Beta 57 over the SM58 for vocals because it is a little more crisp. The 57 is also a killer mic for drums. Of course it's awesome for snare but I also use it for kick and it amazes people when they come up after the show and see that I am using a Beta 57. I simply lay it in the drum on a piece of foam and EQ and gate the kick drum. I get an awesome, tight bass sound that is perfect for double bass. The Beta 57 also works extremely well for saxophone. As is true with all Shure mics, these thing are super durable too with their hardened windscreen.
Comments about Shure Beta 57A Microphone:
I play the drums and sing some songs and all the backing vocals. I have used a Shure SM10 for many years because I did not want to have a stand getting in the way of my playing. If I only sang backing vocals it would not matter, but singing lead I found the SM10 fell short. I researched mics with very tight cararoid patterns, it came down to the Beta57a and the Audix OM5. The Beta57a was the better choice for my aplication and all I can say is wow. It is clearer than any of our SM58's and the guitar players Sennheiser. If you are a singing drummer this is the mic for you. Just let the sound guy know what your using, or he will be scrambling for the gain knob lol.
Tightest pickup pattern in its class.
It is a Shure
Comments about Shure Beta 57A Microphone:
I am the lead singer/ harp player for a full sounding Southern Rock Tribute. The guitars are hot and this mic cuts with out picking up stage noise and causing a loop like most others. Nothing like it.
I have used this mic since it came out. It replace the good old SM 58.
Great quality. I have to replace it every several years due to abuse.
The price is right only when it's on sale.
Comments about Shure Beta 57A Microphone:
I bought the Beta 57A for use in my event video production work, specifically, handheld use for interviews where the ambient noise level is high. Example is a wedding reception with loud music in the background or general handheld interviewer use. I specifically like its durability and dynamic design, saving me from worrying about batteries or phantom powering. Just two issues: (1) Shure's blue elastomer band around the windscreen has a way of getting lost, and won't bind with adhesive; (2) the mic is subject to proximity effect (excessive booming) if the speaker holds the mic too close. I instruct speakers to use the Rule of Thumb is setting distance.
Comments about Shure Beta 57A Microphone:
I got one about a year ago to go along with my SM57. I use the two of them together and they work very well recording my classical and Taylor guitar. The 57A I have aimed at the bridge and the SM57 Both are placed about 4 inches from the guitar. I get a nice balanced sound from them, but the 57A is a little hotter/more sensitive than the SM57. I know these aren't the best mics for acoustic guitar, but I haven't had any trouble or complaints about the sound quality of my recordings.
Comments about Shure Beta 57A Microphone:
I recently bought one for my male vocals to use it live: I tried Shure SM-58, the better Audix OM-2, and the better senheiser 835 (the best for $100). Also Blue enCore 200, Audix OM-5, Shure beta 57A (the best for $150) and the condenser Shure Beta 87A. Since I was unable to hear a difference between Beta 58A and Beta 87A (Im sure there is) in a medium size PA (the biggest I will use) I decided to buy Beta 58A.
Comments about Shure Beta 57A Microphone:
If you are considering an SM 58, get this instead! Like others have said, this thing blows a 58 out of the water side-by-side. I have both and reach for the 57A every time. I use it for vocals and have found it works excellently with male voices. Do yourself a favor and grab this for a little extra money...you won't be disappointed!
Comments about Shure Beta 57A Microphone:
I gig very frequently, mostly to crowds of around 100 people or less. in most all of my shows, i use my Taylor NS42 (which i usually plug into the PA), Mandolin, and Banjo. as a multi-instrumentalist, this thing ROCKS. it's like a sm57 but better and more responsive, with less feedback. on vocals it kills an sm58 side by side. this is your do everything improved workhorse microphone; mine has been used thoroughly and i am more than pleased. mics guitar cabs exceptionally well; all that there is left to do is break out the harmonica; something tells me i won't be disappointed.
Comments about Shure Beta 57A Microphone:
I have owned this microphone for about 2 years now and have had nothing but good luck with it. I use it mostly when I am micing Instruments I have used it a couple of times for vocals when I have been in a bind with out a Vocal Mic. Nothing but good crisp clear sound every time I use it.
