Bottom line, if you are recording by yourself and using a compatible Tascam, why NOT get this? Its cheap enough and the freedom it gives is kind of nice. I could get along without it, but sometimes, I must say, it really helps. If you bought a recorder, monitors, good cables etc..., you obviously care about your work, don't stop there. Its not a life saver but if I could go back,I would get it again.

I'm using this pedal with a Tascam DP-32SD recorder, and it does what it's supposed to do. Besides having a nice long cord, those are about the only positive things I have to say about it.

The design of the pedal leaves a lot to be desired:

- While the bottom is metal with two nice large anti-skid pads, the pedals themselves are really cheaply made. They are simply plastic, with no rubber pads or anything of that sort on the top of them.

- Batteries... Really? Bad design, why couldn't have the recorder itself powered this? It's nothing but a signal pedal. Can you imagine a sustain pedal for a keyboard that required batteries? Even if it would have taken a multi-pin connector to lose the batteries, that should have been done. There's not even an option for external power, not that I need any more wall warts. Just one more thing to stock up on those AA batteries for folks.

- What concerns me most are the hinges of the pedals (if you can call them that). They appear to be just a thin piece of plastic that is part of the upper housing itself. It's hard to tell, maybe they are some sort of metal flap, but even so I question the durability there. I do a lot of punch in/out work, so I guess it won't take long to find out.

To me, all of this is completely unacceptable for such a pricy pedal. Tascam products are hard to figure out sometimes.

I own their DP-32SD and DP-008EX recorders, and both are absolutely awesome pieces of equipment. They have a ton of functionality, are very well made, and extremely affordable.

On the other hand, I purchased a studio headphone package that included a PreSonus HP4 amp (great sounding unit, built like a tank) and two sets of their TH-200X headphones. Within a month one set completely quit and the other was distorting badly, total junk. I replaced them with CAD MH300 headphones, which are about the same cost. What a difference, the CAD cans blow the Tascams away in every way.

Anyway, all of this leaves me scratching my head as to why the quality of Tascam products varies so widely. I just never know what to expect from them, and that really makes it hard to buy with confidence.

The price seems a little high at first but it's really a bargain when you consider it's usability. Aside from the obvious punch in/ out function there are two other switches. All are programmable. I use my left switch for back to the Mark leading up to the punch-in, then the center is my big punch switch. The right switch is my start switch. There are so many combinations a available. It is extremely well constructed too. Best and most intuitive switch ever!

Think it will add flexibility to recording process. Pricey and disappointed that it operates from a battery. They could have designed it to draw power from the recording unit itself. The cable is also pretty thin, so hope it holds up!
