I found that I was able to use it right out of the box with just a brief run through of the manual. I, being of the cassette tape era and having owned another multi-track found it especially inuitive to navigate.
I've run direct and with the internal mic's at home with guitar and found the sound quality to be quite pleasing. I also use this at band rehearsal and with the right placement, adjustments to trim, output level, gain - that it captures a pretty balanced sound.
It's been two weeks that I've been using this device almost on a daily basis. I can't express how easy it is to use with just a short read of the instructions. It has many more functions which I've yet to explore but for recording on the fly this is very simple to use.
I've played some recordings for people who are your typical listeners and they can't distinguish between this and studio quality recordings.
For me, it's an all in one srcatchpad which has exceeded my expectations and is perfectly suited for what it was designed for.

I got this as a SDOTD (with the TM78 microphone) for scratchpadding outside my digital studio. I was surprised at the depth of features and quality of the sound as well as the decent internal microphones. The features have been substantially improved over the previous 008.

The construction is good (especially compared to the atrocious DR-08 I bought previously) and the controls are intelligently laid out. The manual is sensible and well-organized, which is important with a product with as many complex functions as this has.

The biggest single problem (in common with Tascam's other portables) is the extremely high battery consumption relative to Tascam's fanciful claimed battery life. This is a real deal-killer for outside use. Incredibly, given this unit's ravenous appetite for AAs (especially when providing phantom power) and its list price, there is no AC adapter included! What were they thinking?

At a very low sale price, I would recommend this unit, with the caution that there would be additional investments in multiple sets of rechargeable batteries and a wall adapter. At typical retail, I would not.

Comments about Tascam DP-008EX Digital 8-Track Pocketstudio:

I am an old geezer who has owned a 4-track cassette Portastudio for years (I still have it, and it still works perfectly!).

Around 14 years ago, I made the switch to Cakewalk and computer-based recording. While recording on a computer opens up an entire new world of possibilities, my productivity actually suffered -- any time I tried recording a new song, it seemed like I would spend too much time messing with computer stuff, and not actually recording. Then there's all the upgrades, patches, etc. Recording become less "fun" and more of a "chore".

I saw the DP-008EX on sale at Musician's Friend, and decided to give it a try. I was hoping that, by eliminating the computer, my recording would again become as easy and painless as in the old cassette Portastudio days.

The Digital Portastudio comes close, but has a couple of annoyances that get in the way of me truly enjoying it.

PROS:
The recording is push-button simple. press the "record" button on a track, and press the master "record" button on the unit -- you're recording a track! In this regard, it works exactly like the old Portastudio does. Once you get your input sources set up properly, you can lay down 8 tracks with ease.

Sound quality is very good.

Super portable! You could record with this anywhere. I'm thinking of carrying it in my car along with a guitar, so I could record tracks on my lunch hour at work.

Bouncing tracks is done in "real time", which is wierd, but works flawlessly.

Unit allows you to Import/Export tracks to/from a computer, via the SD card.

I like the built-in Mastering mode, I wouldn't call the results "studio quality" but I am very happy with it.

CONS:
The old cassette Portastudio's had a Mic/Line switch, and a trim pot, for each track, right on top of the unit. It was simple-easy to switch between a line or mic source, and set the trim. I switch between microphone, guitar, and a keyboard a LOT. On the Digital Portastudio - the Mic/Line switch is on the BACK of the unit, where you can't see it.. and there's only one switch that applies to all inputs. And there's no trim pot -- to set the input gain of the source, you have to go to a menu mode and select "Ext Input - MIC" or "Ext Input - Line" - this takes several button clicks. And you have to do it for each input (ie, twice). Because the switch and trim settings are "invisible", it's easy to forget where you're set and you'll mess up a few takes before you realize what the problem is. I switch between microphone, keyboard and guitar a LOT, and this is a major hassle for me.

EQ settings are too hard to get to, via the menu. I wish they had added a couple more knobs per channel for EQ, like the old Portastudio's had. I dislike the EQ menu so much, I just ignore it.

Unit only records 2 tracks at a time - I knew this, but it might be important to note. If you want to record piano and vocals simultaneously, you can do so -- but each track will be in mono. A workaround would be to run your mic and keys through another mixer first, then feed the stereo output into the DP-008EX.

Comments about Tascam DP-008EX Digital 8-Track Pocketstudio:

First of all, I'm not new to multitrack recorders. I have my main recorder in the studio, but I wanted something that was portable and powerful. I was immediately impressed by the build quality. This unit has some weight and feels like you'd expect a quality piece of gear to feel. The internal mics do a decent job of noise rejection and pick up surprisingly well. Having only 2 inputs is limiting, but hey for the price... The good news is that with bounce down recording you can actually have up to 14 tracks. The unit has some basic effects that are decent and can be applied either pre or post recording. The vocal effects and compressor do a good job. If you are familiar with a multitrack recorder the layout and basic recording will be familiar and intuitive. If you are not then the manual can be confusing. The mix down process is somewhat confusing and the manual takes some study. Now for the cons. The unit does not come with a power supply and battery life has not shown to be as long as advertised (surprise, surprise). The supply is five volt two amp, so it's not as easy to find a good generic. I don't know why companies can't just standardize a power supply to neg nine volts and be done with it. Just get a supply. Be prepared to spend some time with the manual and a little head scratching. Also, take the time to make some test recordings and play before recording something vital (I found out the hard way). I haven't used phantom powered mics yet, so I'm not sure of the battery draw there. Take extra batteries. Overall, I am thrilled with the recorder and the folks at MF always make shopping a pleasure.

Comments about Tascam DP-008EX Digital 8-Track Pocketstudio:

This is a great little piece of equipment. It is small enough to take with you wherever you go. Turn virtually any space into a make shift studio. While there are better pieces of equipment out there, for the price this one can't be beat.
If you are not familiar with recording, you should take the time and read the instruction manual very carefully. My 16 year old daughter was able to use the manual and have a multi-track song recorded in about an hour. It has great sound on the guitar tracks, but I would recommend picking up a condenser mic to go with it. The built in mics are sufficient for basic stuff, but the additional mic will help tremendously with achieving a professional sound.
You should know that the AC adapter is not included and the battery life is short lived to say the least. Be sure to pick up an adapter to go with the DP008EX and you will be good to go.
All in all this is a great product and I would absolutely recommend it to you!

Comments about Tascam DP-008EX Digital 8-Track Pocketstudio:

Like a lot of individuals on the site it seems, I picked this up as one of MF's "Stupid deals of the day", which also included a TM-78 condenser mic. The intuitiveness and quick start section of the manual get you started right away and the quality is superb. The small size is nice for portability but if you're used to working with a 4-track cassette or an older, larger digital multitrack, you might find it an adjustment working with a unit this size. The only real complaint I have is the headphone monitor being a thumbwheel on the back panel. It should have been a regular dial on the top mixer panel. As for the lack of an AC adapter, that's easily enough solved. A PSP-100 game console power supply is a dead ringer for the Tascam one, just make sure you get one that's 5 volts DC and 2000 milliamps current, easily had cheaply on ebay. Even the original DC barrel plug is the right size. P.S., Neither I, nor Musician's Friend are responsible if it smokes your recorder, but that's what I use, and the specs are identical. All in all, it's quite a versatile little recorder and well worth the money.

Comments about Tascam DP-008EX Digital 8-Track Pocketstudio:

This is the first multitrack digital recorder I've used. The instructions are not 100% clear, but with a couple of trials and a couple of rereads it was easy to figure out.

I first used the built-in mics to record acoustic instrument. I had to set input to high and all volume adjustments nearly to max to get a decent volume on meter. I then tried using a Shure 57 microphone in both rear inputs, but it made no difference - still needed higher volume levels than I expected. I could not get the overload indicators to light even with heavy strumming.

I also attached an electric guitar in the guitar inputs direct with no amplifier. This was a little better but nearly insignificant. I was able to get a slight overload indication.

Alkaline batteries will only give you a couple of hours of use before they're dead. Get an external power supply as it will save you money in the long run.

Product quality is very good to excellent and I was quite pleased with appearance, functions, and 'feel'. My brother has used Tascam recorders and rates them very highly as the best in their price range.

Buying from Musician's Friend was easy, priced right, and very quick shipping.

Comments about Tascam DP-008EX Digital 8-Track Pocketstudio:

Despite the looks of the recorder and all the switches and buttons, this machine is very easy to use and navigate once you put your fingers on it. Makes a great recording scratch pad or does full blown 8 channel recordings with mastering and mix-down functions. Recordings are very clear compared to the analog tape recorders of yester-year.

One function that is especially helpful when over-dubbing is the ability to set "in" and "out" points for editing your recordings. This function helps ensure you don't record over some of your previous recorded work.

Like I said in the headline - for the price of this little unit and what it can accomplish is amazing. I would definitely recommend this product.

Comments about Tascam DP-008EX Digital 8-Track Pocketstudio:

This Tascam is so portable that it's very easy to take with you on playing jobs. In the home, it's easy to make recordings of 8 or more tracks, but the manual is necessary to work your way through some processes. I like the idea of being able to use both hi and lo impedence mikes. A lot of features have been shoved into the machine. They're not all great, but they're handy in a pinch, and better than nothing. For instance, there is some EQ, reverb, etc. I would have preferred that with all that technology, it could have figured out it's mike sources or ambiant noise levels. It does take a while to record a song, install it on the computer and then covert it to audio technology, but at least it can be done and it's extremely portable and fills a good niche. One warning, though, is that if one buys the 32gb card, it's easy (at least with mine) to start getting "SD Write" on the screen and then you have to power down with a subsequent loss of info unless you saved everything. Overall, it's an excellent product. I am glad that I purchased it and have used it nearly daily for 9 months with no issues or indications of wear (I've taken good care of it). It does tend to pick up dust specs on the inside of the screen. The actual rating would be 4.5 stars due to its lack of simplicity (not unexpected) and struggles with 32gb cards.

At a very low sale price, I would recommend this unit, with the caution that there would be additional investments in multiple sets of rechargeable batteries and a wall adapter. At typical retail, I would not.

Handy little portable recording studio. Can be used to record instruments separately and mix or do multiple tracks at once. I use it to record our band at practices with good results. Small enough to carry in a pocket on a mic stand bag.

Comments about Tascam DP-008EX Digital 8-Track Pocketstudio:

I had been using the DP-004 for a couple years with great results. Then I started looking at projects where I would need more than 4 tracks, and the DP-008 came up as the "Stupid Deal of the Day" for a ridiculous price. Besides the extra tracks, the -008 has some added features (like reverb and EQ) that some may find useful if they plan to do much of their mixing in the portable studio. I prefer to capture tracks in the -008 and transfer them to a DAW on my computer to add effects and mix, so they don't mean anything to me. Be aware that there is a learning curve in navigating the menus, and some operations are tedious, like having to unnecessarily enter the same filename multiple times to just backup and create WAV files for export. These should default to the entered name for the song name.

Comments about Tascam DP-008EX Digital 8-Track Pocketstudio:

I initially purchased the DP008EX because it was on sale , thinking of giving it as a gift. I have quite a bit of experience with small multi-trackers and I also have a full blown Pro Tools DAW. Now it's a given that this is not a full featured unit but once I took it out of the box to test it and play with it, I was very impressed. Easy to use, nice feature set with some EQ and reverbs and an excellent work surface layout. The quality of the build seems quite good as well. Without the manual I recorded a short 6 track tune in under 10 min. The workflow is well thought out. It records to the SD card and in wav file format , which makes the recordings compatible with other DAW's or recorders. I like having recording "toys" and now regret not buying two !

Comments about Tascam DP-008EX Digital 8-Track Pocketstudio:

This small device works great, especially if you don't want to be tied to your Digital Audio Workstation. Its portable, and the two built in microphones work decently. I got this as The Stupid Deal of the Day and sold my used DP-008 device and got enough money to buy this upgraded DP-008EX for less than what I sold the old version because of the Deal of the Day, plus I received the free Tascam Microphone as a bundled perk. What a deal. Thanks Musician Friend. The device is portable and records very nicely and allows you to take your recording and export them your full features DAW for additional processing. A very handy device for the singer songwriter musician. Keep on picking.

Comments about Tascam DP-008EX Digital 8-Track Pocketstudio:

This is a sweet little recorder. I've had mine for 6 years so I've had some experience with it.

The good: Very good recording quality. The 2 built in condenser mics are nice. You can use external condensers because it has phantom power or dynamic mics. You can bypass your amp and plug a guitar directly into the recorder. Record up to 8 channels but only 2 at a time. It has a jack for a pedal (sold separately) so you can punch in and out--very handy feature. (Punch in/out is if you have a good recording except for that one bad place. Just play along with your good recording until you get to the bad spot then Punch In using the foot pedal--now you're recording over the bad spot. Once you record past the bad spot Punch Out using the pedal and the rest of your original good recording is in tact).

You record onto an SD card. 2GB included.

The recorder has some basic effects. And the really nice thing about this recorder is that it is so small yet so versatile for its size and price.

                The Bad.

First thing is that there is a learning curve. It's not too bad but be prepared to spend a little time figuring out the basic functions. For example: if you want to record a song before you do anything else you must "create" a song file. Then you go into that song file and you can record. You can't record first then save/name the file afterwards. It's like this. If this recorder was the Word text editor you would have to open up a blank document, name it and save it Before you could type and save anything. So in this basic sense the recorder isn't "intuitive" for someone who hasn't recorded before. It's no big deal. All you are doing when you "create a song" is you are making and naming a "file folder" before you begin recording.

Another thing. If you want to transfer a file from your recorder to your computer you must first change the format of the file. Just another thing to learn.

You'll also want an a/c adapter, a 16 or 32 GB SD card , and pedal.
