I started playing drums in 1959 and used calf drum heads up until about 1976 when it became almost impossible to find them (exception being the Chicago Rawhide Company) and had to switch to plastic. There is really no comparision in sound between calfskin and plastic heads.....but I have to say that the fiberskyn heads come the closest in sound and even vegetarians can feel comfortable playing the. The weather has little effect on them and that was the only downside to calf heads ....humidity, heat, AC, cold ... etc ...changed their sound dramatically and you had to tune the crap out of them. If you like a fat jazz funk sound with the musical ring of a calf head ...Remo Fiberskins are for you ...in any and all sizes.

See my previous post. These heads still sound good, but after only a few weeks I noticed that the skyn coating was wrinkled. Taking it off the drum, it was obvious that the coating had begun to delaminate from the substrate film. So far no adverse affect to the sounds, but at some point they there will enough air between the substrate and coating it will need to be replaced, and I would guess that will come far sooner than it would for a regular coated head. Very disappointed. I won't buy them again.

      Avoid these heads

Comments about Remo FiberSkyn Ambassador Batter Head:

I bought several of these heads for use on my snare drum. Big mistake. First, they don't last. The first one broke within hours and a second broke within days. I am not a hard player. I have broken 2 or 3 regular mylar heads in 20 years. So I learned my lesson and tried using them on a drum that would basically only be played with brushes. Even bigger mistake, for while the texture is great for brushes, it will de-laminate creating little pockets for the brush wires to get caught in. I destroyed a favorite pair of brushes this way. Avoid these heads.

Nice, round, warm and fat tones

Comments about Remo FiberSkyn Ambassador Batter Head:

These are great heads, if you like round and warm tones. The stick attack is much less pronounced on these heads than regular clear or coated heads. They have a real nice round fullness to them, almost as if you are hitting them with a soft mallet instead of a stick. Because of this, I wouldn't recommend them if you need your drums to "cut" or like "attack". I have had no durability issues with them at all, nor have I found them any more/less difficult to tune than standard heads. I don't recommend them for snare drums if you play brushes. You can barely hear brushes on it (vs. a Coated Head)and the surface is too smooth, hard to accent and add flutters etc. Great warm jazz heads, you'll like them if you like full, round tones with soft attack.

Don't use these on a snare

Comments about Remo FiberSkyn Ambassador Batter Head:

I put this head on my 13" Pork Pie Patina brass snare, and it did have a great sound and I was very happy. It even looked good on the drum too...then it breaks 2 months later after lite use (I practice for a couple hours twice a week)...In the middle of a gig!! This is the first head I've had break on my in 15 years. I replace way before breakage seams likely. I was able to lip through as part of the head did stay intact and kind of sound like a snare. What sucks is I almost always have a backup snare behind me on stage, but I left it in my car that night. Anyway, I wouldn't recommend this head for any use, but whatever you do, don't put it on your snare.

Comments about Remo FiberSkyn Ambassador Batter Head:

I personally love the way these heads' sound and play.If they break,I will buy more! They are still half the price of real skin and for light Jazz playing,I expect, just as durable!
So Far,I am very pleased! I do play with 7A zildjian/wooden-tip sticks and I have a light touch to my style!
Love the sound and feel of these heads'!I have put them on my Jr.Pulse drumkit,to make a Jazz/BeBop kit. They sound great!A buddy of mine came over and fell in love with these Skins'!
So Far,No problemo.I have read some bad reviews' on breakage, but as of now, still playing!
Great price for something that sounds' like real skin, without the real skin price! if you want real skins,check-out "Earthtone",but you better have a fat wallet! ; )

Comments about Remo FiberSkyn Ambassador Batter Head:

I don't know why everyone is raving about this head for snare use.I think this would be a good head for tom use (although I haven't tried that), but in the last 20 years of live and studio work this is the only snare head I've had break.I really liked the sound, but it just didn't last and I only had it on for 2 months.I'm sticking with Remo heads, but not this one.

Comments about Remo FiberSkyn Ambassador Batter Head:

I play a Ludwig Zepp Centennial Kit and wanted to give it some personality so i loaded my whole kit with Remo Fiberskyn heads. I tuned the heads low and it took about 4 full practice sessions for the heads to stretch and settle into their own. I gotta say that these Fiberskyn heads sound amazing, the tone is fat and low and really lends some amazing look and feel to my kit. But when practicing with the rest of the band, we play Loud heavily distorted alt rock, the toms and kick just couldn't cut through the mix. BUT they sound amazing on our recordings! So its a toss up, these provide killer tone but don't cut through loud guitars and bass live, however look great on stage. So i would say if your kit is going to be mic'd at shows or with the band USE THESE HEADS, or for recording. But unless your playing jazz or something more quiet, stay away.

Comments about Remo FiberSkyn Ambassador Batter Head:

I recently did a build using an undrilled, unmilled maple shell that I got for cheap. As this was for jazz, I thought I'd give the Fiberskyn a try. The head looks killer. I really wanted to like this head, but I just could never get the drum to sound the way I wanted it to. Hitting anywhere but dead center produced excessive ring. Hitting in the center, the sound is "thin" without much depth or body. The head sound FANTASTIC with brushes, but for anything else from sticks, or rim shots to rim clicks, I prefer the Evans G1. This is personal preference. The people who like the Fiberskyn are not "wrong," but if you really like the sound of a G1 on a snare drum, you probably won't like the Fiberskyn.

These heads sound amazing! I use a single ply coated resonator head with them and it sounds great. It definitely has a vintage tone, and surprising similar to Jack White's drum tone from The Dead Weather.

When I got one for my 14," I was all exited about how amazing it sounded, then after a week and with no sign, it ripped straight down the middle. Only get this if the way you play drums is best described as "timid tapping," or if you have the money to buy heads every week.

        Perfect for me.

        By Anonymous

        from Undisclosed

Comments about Remo FiberSkyn Ambassador Batter Head:

This is an incredible sounding head. I couldn't ask for anything more out of a drumhead. It's very warm, with long resonance. It has a soft attack, with a little overtone that becomes more noticeable has the head size increases. Very good for jazz, and brushwork sounds fairly loud as far as brushwork goes. However, it will make your snare ringy, and requires a significant fine tuning to reduce, but you can't get rid of it without muffling. So buy a P3 Fiberskyn if you don't like ringy snares. You do have to be a little patient with the head, because, as I've found with all drumheads, They don't sound their best when you first put them on.

i recently bought one of these heads for my snare, and i am having a very difficult time getting a definate sound out of it, also the top layer is starting to delaminate after about two weekds od use. i would say skip the hassel and go for a black dot or an ambasador.

        Great sounds

        By maxsammie

        from Indiana

Comments about Remo FiberSkyn Ambassador Batter Head:

I have had these heads on three different sets. I particularly like the head for the snare, with a warm tone, especially on brushwork. I also use for the toms and they have proven to be very durable and have a great deep tone. I actually use a little bit of weather stripping on the inside of the head to reduce the amount of ring for the toms. I also have this on my kick drum and while the aquarian superkick or Evans EMAD sound great, I have found that this head can also have the same impact. I will continue to buy these heads and no others.

Comments about Remo FiberSkyn Ambassador Batter Head:

These heads produce a great sound that pops with just the right tone. The only problem is, if you are using them to play heavy back-beats on your snare drum, they will wear out fairly quick vs. using them for jazz applications (they start to bubble up in the beating zone). However, while they last, I would say the sound is better than most heads I've found to get the snare drum sound I like.

Comments about Remo FiberSkyn Ambassador Batter Head:

Well, first of all, I have this head on a 14" snare. Let me just start by saying, it is a bitch to tune. I guess it is in the nature of the faux-calfskin material to make tuning a little more difficult, but it's a little ridiculous.I usually find that snare drums sound better when the bottom head is tuned higher than the batter head, but it is not so with the Fiberskyn 3. I had to tune the batter way up and tune the snare side down to get a good crack out of it.I really like the warm undertones this head puts out, but it's not a great cracky head, really. For brushes, it'd beat anything else in the world. But for rock, I'd consider something else if I were you.Okay, yeah, I'll continue to use it on my snare until it wears out, but when it does, I probably WON'T buy another.

Comments about Remo FiberSkyn Ambassador Batter Head:

Mylar heads are a boon to todays drummers and there are enough verity to mount any drummers set ups the way He/She wants them. In the old days we had to mount our own cow hide heads on wooden hoops and tuck them in our selves! ! A lot of work ! ! The Mylar heads are the answer to all drummers old or young and I personally like the FiberSkyn because they come the closest to the sound of Cow Hide and I don't have to mount them myself ! ! BUT I DO MISS them and they way they sounded..
