OVERVIEW

Lose the bad hum, crank up the tone!

Seymour Duncan Blackouts are 9-volt active humbuckers that provide more extended frequency response with less compression. Seymour Duncan engineers have captured the tone players want in an active guitar pickup design with the benefits of balanced inputs.

Not only do Seymour Duncan Blackouts active humbuckers have less hum than most active humbuckers, they also have more lows, more highs, and more output. Simply put, the Blackouts have more tone than most active pickups. Players will find far fewer problems with hum, especially near computer monitors and fluorescent lighting.

Blackouts are available in individual neck and bridge models, or as a two-pickup set. All versions come with all necessary mounting hardware, including pots, jack, and a battery clip.

Ok. Here is the complete lowdown on these pickups from being an active musician and using them for 6 months. I switched to these pickups for about six months from the EMG 81. The Blackouts are very very heavy metal, they have alot more gain than the EMGs, a lot more tone, tons of sustain, and are very heavy pickups in general. They also have a hell of a lot more output to. This being said, you will have to turn your gain down alot as well as your lows. Cons: They have absolutely no bite at all. They often muddy up very quickly and are very un clear. I went back to the EMG 81 and I am absoluelty happy that I did. I can now hear crystal clear what I am playing and I am obviously getting the screamin demon tone of the EMG 81. I play a peavey 6505 through a Marshall vintage cab with an Ibanez tube screamer. I through a boss chorus pedal into my fx loop and I suddenly had the best of both worlds of the EMG and Blackout. I was able to get the fatness of the duncan really quick and I still have that EMG bite. If you are having problems with the EMG, throw some chorus into it and you will be fine.

Comments about Seymour Duncan Original HB-1 Blackouts Active Humbucker:

I just got this in the mail yesterday and installed it myself and this thing rocks!!! Theres alot of lows and highs and it picks up harmonics very well. And if you are worried about installing it, anyone can do it with soldering experience. I am a 16 year old kid in high school and I installed it with no trouble at all. This is a great pickup for metal and I highly recommend it!

Comments about Seymour Duncan Original HB-1 Blackouts Active Humbucker:

The Blackout is a great pickup. The output is too high for a TC Electronics G System (which is really the fault of TC). The pickup does not have enough cut when playing fast riffs on some amps. The EMG 81 cuts better because the EMG 81 does not put out as much bass frequencies. Blackout has way better cleans than EMG 81. The Blackout Neck pickup is amazing for cleans. The EMG 81 (bridge position) works better with a wah pedal than the Blackout Bridge. I need to try the Mick Thompson Blackout (AHB-3). I here it cuts better than the AHB-1 (regular Blackout).

The tone You lookin' for in Metal

By DaveWentToHollywood9

from Colorado springs, CO

Comments about Seymour Duncan Original HB-1 Blackouts Active Humbucker:

Okay, you know how you get that muddy, rather boxy sound with EMG's? These nix all that stuff. Perfect sustain and thrash metal type tone. EMG's are gonna be for death metal and a lot of palm muting bs. These blackouts are for shredding and getting the most tone out of any riff and lick you can come up with. Get this pick up if you wanna sound legit!!

Blackouts = great tone

Comments about Seymour Duncan Original HB-1 Blackouts Active Humbucker:

I love warm round tone, and these blackouts deliver... As with any new gear you have to take a little time to get it dialed in, but once you do get ready for wonderfull clarity at any volume, and damn tracking those guitars now a breeze. I find that you get amazing defined notes thru high gain and high volume. My only complaint is that my order for my neck pick up is lagging, and I cant wait to get in and rock the full set. A must for serious players looking for great tone with active pick ups.

absolutely amazing!

By MetaDoc

Comments about Seymour Duncan Original HB-1 Blackouts Active Humbucker:

I accidentally bought two of the bridge blackout active pickups and for about two weeks I just played my les paul with the original Alnico stanards that come with, but a couple of days ago I sucked it up and had a tech put both in (Bridge in bridge and Bridge in neck). I was hesitant, but the tech said that he would put a larger conductor on the tone pot of the neck to see how it would fare. Bottom line, awesome. Completely! I've been around, you know, sixteen years playing and fourteen as a professional and I got to tell you that I have found the holy grail of metal pickups! The tight compressed feel of these things really hits the spot! You get harmonics when you want them, not when you don't even though they're hot as two mice makin' it in a wool sock! Definition is hard core, man! I play very fast licks that I need people to hear and it definitely does that! A lot of people swear by the EMG 81, 86, and a plethora of other actives, but when it comes down to it all of those have a dark tone that wont let you be versatile. These pickups have a brightness that complements the dark overtones that I utilize without sounding campy. Definitely, if you value your metal tone use these. I play Emmure, Job, and Beneath the Massacre type metal and at times these pickups make me want to cry with tears of happiness. No, you are not going to get the clean feel of a 59' Alnico from these, but what the crap do you want? If you already have that kind of pickup or don't play metal, why are you even considering these? Seymour has a plethora of other pickups that suit you so, don't go raggin on the Blackouts , it'll totally hurt my feelings! Ha! These are the only pickups I will ever consider again. Period.

Comments about Seymour Duncan Original HB-1 Blackouts Active Humbucker:

Well I've been using EMG 81's and 85's for awhile now, and I was excited to finally replace 81 in my bridge. Well, certainly the Blackout does have more output, and I greatly prefer it's tone over the 81. However, I got more feedback and hum with it than the 81. I kinda solved this by turning the tone control on the guitar all the way down, and it actually sounds quite good this way anyways. I was just expecting it to be quieter than it was.

Blackout=Brand New Guitar

By dirtmcgirt18

from Bay Area, CA

Comments about Seymour Duncan Original HB-1 Blackouts Active Humbucker:

Bought a cheap little Epi Les Paul Jr. and the Blackout. Blackout comes with new pots, and a Switchcraft stereo jack. The guitar (with Blackout installed) literally sounds better than my Gibson faded SG did. Very glad I went with the Blackout for this guitar project (my first project guitar). Only thing that ticked me off a bit, was the instructions. Doesn't mention the third wire being wrapped in the black casing. Also doesn't have a wiring diagram for a single pickup guitar (had to call customer service to figure out where the white wire went).

BEST ACTIVE PICKUP YOU CAN BUY

By sloppyjoe

from Galapagos

Comments about Seymour Duncan Original HB-1 Blackouts Active Humbucker:

This pickup came with a guitar I recently bought and it blows any EMG out of the water by far. Harmonics scream on this thing, a really clean and thick distortion sound so nothing gets muddy. Amazing for soloing. This is the best of the best kids. I highly recommend this pickup to anyone who plays metal and wants the best possible tone.

Comments about Seymour Duncan Original HB-1 Blackouts Active Humbucker:

I bought a bridge blackout and it sounds great. I had to carve out some holes in my ibanez sa260fm and it took a while for me to install myself. I like this more than my zw emg in my other guitar, and this one was quite a bit cheaper. Great Value.

EMG killer...

By Ironklad

from CALI

Comments about Seymour Duncan Original HB-1 Blackouts Active Humbucker:

I picked up the blackout to replace the stock pickups in a Jackson PS-4, and the thing kills - massive output, low hum, and scathing distortion, just as SD promised.I did have some problems with the install, though...the pots that came with the pickup had wider shafts than the stock ones, so I had to file the holes out to fit. I also had to file out the hole for jack, since the included stereo jack is much larger than the stock one.I also nearly had to do some routing of the body to get the pickup itself to fit, but was *BARELY* able to squeeze it in there. While it was totally worth it to me, I would recommend thinking twice about getting one of these if you have a guitar that you're uncomfortable with doing some permanent modifications to. OTOH, larger guitars may not have the same issues that my jackson did.

Great Active Pickup

Comments about Seymour Duncan Original HB-1 Blackouts Active Humbucker:

I have owned these pickups for about 8 months now and are fantastic! They are in an ibanez S520 custom. They provide such aggressive distortion but at the same time clear crisp tone. I run through Line 6 Spider 3. MY harmonics are extremely easy to perform *especially pinch* you can do them all day with these. I plan on buying another pair for my ibanez rg321. These pickups are the best I have ever heard. I have tried emg 81/85 theyre..... ok nothing really spectacular. I am not hating on them but the Sd Blackouts punch you in the face compared to emg, Sd blackouts are made for Modern Metal and Rock in general NOT FOR PEOPLE STUCK IN 1950!!! If you like metal and want the best sound from your guitar slap a couple of these babies in and thrash away!!! You wont be dissapointed one you hear the first strum, you'll feel the bass and dynamic sound and your ears will melt. And when you decide to solo they scream clarity and warmth at the same time. Bottom line *MY OPINION* best active pickup out there. And affordable.
