Nice pick up but just not for me. The output is too low. I want a pick up to scream when you kick on the overdrive and this thing does not. It's fat warm and round. Buttery and vintage. just enough top end to cut through. I'm more of a JB or a Custom fan myself. I also enjoy the Hot Rails pickup. This pick up is simply lacking the output necessary to puch the amp into pure overdrive heaven. Where this thing really shines in my opinion is the clean tones. Very fat round buttery sound with just enough top end bite to make your guitar sound more like a classic Les Paul. For Jazz I think this thing is perfect. Also clean or semi dirty bluesy lead playing. This pickup excels at that. Traded it in for a Duncan Custom and I am much happier. If you want classic PAF tones with a buttery low end this is your pickup. If you want hot screaming searing burning madness look elsewhere. Hope this helps. Cheers!

Well, I would like to start by saying that Seymour Duncan puts a lot of care and quality into their pickups. But this pickup in particular just doesn't do it for me, at least for the price. Sure, it picks up a lot of harmonics, but I don't really feel any sensitivity to playing dynamics at all. It just seems like a very one-dimesional sound(sorry, Seymour!). It just seems that the tone is focused just on getting those high harmonics and nothing else, seeming to me very tonally sterile, just a lot of fuzz and high end. Then again, that's just me. Check the stuff out for yourself, it's really the only way you'll ever know.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-PG1 Pearly Gates Pickup:

I have an Ibanez ARZ 800, love the guitar, but I hated the pickups that were in it. EMG's 80/61 active pickups. The were good, but not very versatile. I bought the Pearly Gates for the bridge position, and bought the Sh 59 custom and wow such a huge difference! I love to play jazz, but I also love to play metal, having these two pickups allowed me to do this. The balance of tones are just perfect on this, its very bright, warm, and can even be a bit on the trebly side.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-PG1 Pearly Gates Pickup:

Let me be the first to suggest a baby weiner dog. They are so cute. As far as the electric guitar pickups go, the Seymour Duncan pearly gate is THE superlative part for a les paul. There are only two types of pickups I would use in a Les Paul. The Gibson 490R-490T set, which are actually the closest sounding off-the-rack Humbucker, you can get to a PAF. They sound a whole lot like the Pearly Gates, but use Alnico 2 magnets, which are just so musical and sweet sounding. The other is the Pearly Gates of course, which have the same super musical, woody, midrange-forward timbre as the Gibsons but use alnico 5 magnets and are just wicked hot and scorching. Id love to hear them in a Gibson or Heritage(or even Epiphone) semi hollow body, but these (litterally) were made for a Les Paul. Specifically Billy Gibbons' 59 Standard-ghost build, the one hes playing if you see him live. The Pearly Gates Humbucker might even sound a little better than a Seth Lover Built PAF,at least for overdriving a tube amp.Just Gorgeous.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-PG1 Pearly Gates Pickup:

Great quality and fair variety of tones. Sounds very good straight up or split (in a Spalted Maple Tele)
Great range of tones, but mainly gritty, edgier sounds are accented wellwith this p/u.
No issues yet, 4 years in still look and sound brand new.
Not cheap, but very good at what its supposed to do/sound like.

I put this in the neck position of my Gibson SG. My God, it turned my guitar in to a tone monster. It has such clarity for every note even when playing chords it resonates so beautifully. Sounds great when your amp starts to break up. I put a Seymour Duncan "59 in the bridge. I play through a Fender Super Sonic Twin 100 live and a Vox AC30 at home. You can not go wrong with these. I am beyond impressed.

This is the first neck pickup that I REALLY enjoy playing. It provides the perfect lead tone. Nice midrange, but not nasel. Detailed and crisp but never shrill. This is THE bride pickup. I've tried many, but this one is a keeper.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-PG1 Pearly Gates Pickup:

I recently purchased a PRS SE Zach Myers. The stock pups were actually pretty good, and I thought about leaving them, but I kept hearing how good Seymour Duncan pups were. So, I decided to get a Pearly Gates bridge pup since I didn't want too much output with a semi hollow and it get all boomy and produce unwanted feedback but I still wanted some snarl under gain.

Well, like I said, I thought the stock pups were pretty good...until I used the Pearly Gates bridge!!! It sounded so great it made the stock neck pup I left in sound like garbage. The Pearly Gates sounds very bell-like and articulate with good note separation and character on cleans, and keeps the articulation and character under high gain but adds a fabulous growl and snarl that never gets muddy. It isn't a crazy hot doom metal pup though. It is a moderate output pup that does superb cleans, jazz, blues, classic rock, hair metal, and modern hard rock amazingly!! If the latter is what you are seeking, buy one and get a Duncan neck pup while you are at it and you will love your guitar all over again!

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-PG1 Pearly Gates Pickup:

What can I tell you? These pups gave my '88 Les Paul Custom new life! I've been playin' this guitar almost exclusively for over 20 years, and in the last six months, the pups began to turn microphonic. I was so bummed because of all my guitars, (14 in all), this is really my "go to" guitar. I read ton of reviews, and testimonials, and talked with a LOT of friends on the circuit, listened to how Billy Gibbons, Warren Haynes, and Dicky Betts sounded, and got the "Pearly Gates". Awesome sounding set! Through my Cornfords, Marshalls, Hiwatt, and Dr. Z'... flawless... NICE smooth breakup, great sustain, punchy and articulate. I highly recommend a pair of these pups.

Simply put this is the most versatile pick up made. It can easily handle any style you throw at it. if you are looking for a full blown distortion pickup id say look elsewhere but that isnt to say that this pick up cant snarl with the best of em. It is the only pickup ive heard that you can ring a chord with full distortion and hear every note. sounds godly clean too. Well worth the price. sounds great with a matched pair, a 59 or a hot rail in the neck.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-PG1 Pearly Gates Pickup:

Just put a pair in my 2012 Les Paul. I had S/D Hot Rodded set and Pro II Slash p/u's before, but they just seems kind of lacking. The Pearly Gates are very articulate, you can hear each note on any chord. The output seems hotter than what is rated too, making pinch harmonics really squeal, but still controllable. But what I really love is turning the volume up and hearing that deep growl/bite. They easily drive my amp to breaking up. Perfect for rock (AC/DC), southern rock (Skynyrd), or you can turn them down a bit and still get a nice clean, yet full sound. Best P/U's I have had, and they arrived a day ahead of schedule.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-PG1 Pearly Gates Pickup:

A smooth sounding pickup that produces a rich, buttery high-gain tone and cleans up nicely as you back down the guitar's volume. A clean amp tone will allow this pickup to sing sweetly, with full bottom, rich mids and smooth highs. Very stylistically flexible. Can't go wrong with a Duncan!
Seymour Duncan makes great pickups. The Pearly Gates is no exception. Plenty of wire to reach all necessary connections, solid construction. The wiring diagrams at seymourduncan.com are great and cover most any configuration you might want.
Again, Duncan builds a solid, quality product. No issues here.
In the quest for ultimate tone, how can you really put a price on perfection? That said, the price is a great deal for sonic nirvana.

I built a Fat Strat for my dad with a blues and classic rock tone in mind. Initially installed a Seymour TB-4 JB because I have one in a mahogany Ibanez SZ and adore it. With the alder Strat, the JB was shrill and really couldn't cut double duty as a rhythm and lead pickup. Swapped for a TB-PG1 Pearly Gates and loved it. This has plenty of kick. Paired with a Cool Rails neck for more tubular tones and a Vintage Rails mid for clean, which resulted in a very versatile guitar. The Strat now resides in my collection, and I play nu-metal and hard rock almost exclusively. The Pearly Gates still does the job - pinch harmonics are easy, I can get great leads or chunky rhythm out of my 6505. If you're looking to buy this for a Strat, try to pick up the TB-PG1 trembucker/F-spaced version and not the standard (Gibson-spaced) version.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-PG1 Pearly Gates Pickup:

I have the trembucker version of this pickup in my HSS style ESP Strat. Its a really mid-rangey, snarly pickup. And I mean that in the best possible way. Its rated as moderate output (8.35k in the bridge) - this was important to me as I was pairing it with Tonerider single coil pickups. These use an Alnico 3 magent and have the sweetest clean sound I have ever heard - they are however vintage low output (5-6k). So didn't want a big resistance mismatch and the resultant loss of sound. Even so this is not a perfect match as the sound on combining the middle pickup and the PG in the bridge (position 4) results in a thin almost tele like low sound. Its also reduced output. Just thought I'd mention this.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-PG1 Pearly Gates Pickup:

I put the Pearly Gates at the bridge of my Modern Player Telecaster, and like the reviewer below said: "Very pleased." Very, very thick but defined tone. Really roars-great both clean, overdriven, and scorching distortion/lead tones. Also, it's powerful but not totally out of whack with the other pickups, so the position 2 (quack) still sounds good and there is not a huge increase in volume, but there is some increase. Basically this pickup at the bridge is like a "skip to lead" switch some guitars have and now it's just an awesome guitar. I thought the Modern Player Tele's stock humbucker sounded pretty good, but I'm now a believer in Duncan pickups (this was my first "mod")--it sounds 20 times better now.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-PG1 Pearly Gates Pickup:

This pickup is considered moderate output, but I see that as a limited way to describe this pickup. To make a long story short, the mids in my Pearly Gates have a perfect balance! I can play Metal with this pickup if I wanted to and get any sound I want. Some people can't set an amp if they wanted to! Moderate Output is where its at if you want that guitar to sing!!!

                      • Makes A Good Guitar Great

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-PG1 Pearly Gates Pickup:

I purchased this particular pick-up to upgrade a '97 American standard strat SSS to HSS. This '97 strat has the "greasebucket" tone circuit from factory, 250k pots and .022 cap stock, none of which I changed. Wired to NOT split,2nd position is full humbucker and middle. Any wiring diagram you need is on the interwebs at the touch of a button. Once installed and set properly, I (and keep in mind, I'm cheap) am extremely happy with this pickup. My main guitar is a stock 2004 American standard HSS with an S1 switch, and now my '97 just may move to the front of the line, especially with the combo of humbucker and the more bell-like singles that came in the '97 SSS vs. the Tex-Mex (I think)singles in the '04 HSS. This P/U is VERY versatile, and honestly has a decent clean sound while still having attitude, pinch harmonics, warmth and sweet singing sustain (with just a little hair :) ) when spank'd and crank'd. I can best describe it by saying "take the '04,and anything good about that guitar's H/B, take it to the next level". One thing thing I wouldn't recommend it for is uber-metal and other extreme gain genres...this definitely doesn't have that voice or gain. As for the price, I think this one is worth a little more, after all, a cheeseburger is just a bit more and a bit better than a hamburger. It's a great value!

This pup is a tad more expensive for a reason. Its worth the money! Truly the most versatile pick-up Ive used. I dropped one of these in my American strat with the 2 single coil tex-mex pups already in it and boy what a lethal combo of sound. It handles the heavy stuff just as well as the clean
