This was a Christmas gift for our 11 year old son who has Autism, and he was pining for a drum. We felt a Cajon would be a low cost starter kit to improve his motor skills. It was a father & son project, with good fun and a great memory of accomplishing this together.

Cajons are very simple box percussion instruments, and as such are very easy to assemble. All I needed was some wood glue, 2 drill bits, a power drill-driver, a angle square, and a few wood clamps.

As a kit I'm impressed with the quality. I bought the deluxe Ovangkol frontplate version, and I highly recommend spending the little extra for the better tone and playing response over the base line model. Ovangkol tonewood, made famous by Taylor Guitars in their 400 series acoustics, provides a wonderful tone and nice appearance that turns heads and strikes up conversations wherever we go with it. This cajon is great to take on camping trips and other vacations.

Only thing I recommend is to dry fit the parts first before you glue them to make sure they fit.

This is a DIY project and although it could have been better, I have a fully custom cajon from a kit.

Band clamps and other clamps are required to apply the pressure needed. Also the back plate according to the directions is glued on. I glued the back plate, but also brad-nailed it.

You will need to true up and sand like crazy. The joints are strong and the channels come pre-cut.

I took the existing snare design and cut the snares shorter and located them on the sides of the cajon by cutting channels in the frame behind the front plate. Also the front and rear panels in my kit were larger than the sides. All pieces had to be re-cut and re-measured which made the very poor directions useless.

I didn't drill screw holes in the upper corners of the front plate and I relocated the sound hole 1/4 from the bottom on center and made it 4.5" in diameter.

Overall the sound out of my redesigned cajon is very pleasing, responsive and I had the ability to stain in a custom configuration.

It was a great alternative to an off the shelf cajon. I have one that is 100% made to my specifications.

Sounds good. I am impressed by the snare sound even though the snare part was small compared to the other cajons I've seen. It was not hard to put together even though the instructions were not the best. Be aware that you would need additional tools (clamps etc.), wood glue, and wood finishing supplies in order to put it together. Fortunately, I have that stuff already. :)

Just now putting the final finish on it. Went together without any problems. Pieces came well cut, and the wood (ply) has an attractive veneer. If you have no woodworking skills, you will want to review the plans with a person who does, as the instructions leave a bit to be desired. A very nice feature is the whole customiseing thing. You are given an attractive blank palet to customise how you like. Mine is finished with shellac, and I'm ptetty happy with the natural look. I used hand and power tools from my shop, not listed, to make things easier. Keep it square!

Comments about Meinl Make Your Own Cajon:

Bought this for my young percussionist as a project we could do together. Good sound for small area. Used in a living room, small group worship setting with keyboard; cajon adds extra dimension without taking up space. Saved about half the cost of a new, pre-built cajon. Kit comes with all the parts for the cajon itself (panels, braces, snare, screws and feet). At a minimum you'll need wood glue and some hand clamps. Pretty easy and inexpensive to put together if you have the extras on hand that make assembly and finishing easier like straps or clamps, sand paper, and paint or stain. Cost starts to add up if you don't so keep that in mind.

I bought this to use as a addition to different percussion items in my studio. I found the kit easy to construct and of great quality and delivered a great little cajon at a real decent price. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to purchase a cajon at a great price

Good quality woods and accurately precut dimensions , - there are better instructional videos on the internet than the one for this product, it's not an elementary school project like their video implies, you'll be best off with some woodworking tools, like 24in adjustable clamps, etc, but in all a very enjoyable project with the option to custom finish your own Cajon

I have now built two Meinl cajones and they are fun projects and fun to play. All of the components were included and all the pre-cuts were accurate. The most difficult task is countersinking the screw holes on the front piece. One must be very careful to obtain the correct depth to make the screw heads flush with the surface without going to deeply. This would be a great project for parents and their children to make together. Make sure you have a metric ruler, as the measurements are metric.
