I almost ordered the 14 inch drum head and I am so glad I didn't. The 12 inch drum head and overall size of the drum is plenty BIG. Plus there is the price consideration. I would tell most people on a budget, especially first time buyers, the 12 X 24 is all the drum you will EVER need and it will serve you well. I picked out the least expensive 12 X 24 they offered in the Mondo series, and then waited for a sale so I got it even cheaper. This is the 3rd and last Remo I plan on buying. I will own it from now on and It will take on any size venue. Even the 10 inch Remo Festival series I still own has a BIG sound. The picture on the website for the Mondo series shows a rope shoulder strap. My 12 x 24 did not come with a shoulder strap. I think the drum is too big to shoulder any way for any length of time. I asked my wife to be my model so I can show you the size of the 12 X 24, and then I put the 10 inch drum next to the 12 inch so you can see the size difference.

I dislike the cost because it prevents me from buying a whole bunch of these great drums. I rely on Musicians Friend to have some great deals. Compared to rope tuned drums, the smooth shell of these drums tend to slip between your legs. I've been trying to figure out how to prevent that with parachute cord wrapped around the drum otherwise I can just buy a djembe strap. The designs are limited in availability. I only had one on backorder kinda tells you that these drums are popular Their sound is unique. May have a slight ring for some. They definitely hold their own in the drum circle. They are rugged after dropping mine a few times due to the mech tuners attached to a djembe strap that had a "U" shaped drum hook it kept slipping out of. Nothing busted and drum didn't go out of tune. I easily fixed that with a zip tie. It is best to buy a strap that tis in or has an enclosed hook. I also fell off my stool( a three legged portable stool which folded in a few times) and the drum hit the ground and survived without problems. It is light compared to a "traditional" rope tuned djembe. It doesn't feel like carrying a log around. I brought out my roped tuned drum once and returned the following week to the drum circle with my Remo.
I have bought a 16 inch djembe and the 12 inch. The 12 inch Remo djembe has been the workhorse. They need little to no tuning out of the box. As a beginner it is fool proof for me. The designs are totally cool. In comparison to a rope tuned djembe it does have a slight ringy sound but that also varies from drum to drum. The bass sounds are deep and the slaps are crisp. Nice weight compared to my roped tuned djembes that are carved out of a tree. They have a carry handle. The drum head can be replaced but have not had a need to do so. I have had my drums for 3 years and haven't had a need to be tuned. I also live in a cold environment and the drums have had no problems with the weather.
Even though I rate this as an 8 I have no other mechanically tuned djembes to compare against the Remo. I feel that the quality is superb enough to do this review and to go back and order more of these drums for my friends and family.
Of course I would love it to be inexpensive.then I would collect the other designs. Too bad I'm not pro enough to get an endorsement. For the beginner it is monkey proof. It has great sound. I see the veterans and beginners like myself use this djembe in the local drum circle. I would most likely buy more of these for my friends to create my own drum circle.

Comments about Remo Mondo Designer Series Key-Tuned Djembe:

This drum is worth every penny. Make sure you buy the right size drum for the music you intend to play with it.
I'm very happy. I've owned the 14' Remo Djembe for almost 4 years. It's one tough drum. Temp and humidity do not phase it. Once tuned to your liking it pretty much stays where you put it. The sound and tonal qualities are pleasing. I've played it at the coffee house, church, and bigger stages. Often I set it to the left of my hi-hat and use it for added effects to my drum kit. I play it with hands, sticks, and mallets. You should buy a case or bag for transport as with any fine instrument. And a standard drum key will not work for tuning, the shaft is to short. You need a extension from a small socket wrench to get the job done. I know of some who may poo poo the fact that this drum is constructed with all man made materials, and that in can in no way compare to the sound of a hand hewn wooden drum with a true animal skin head, however I salute REMO for their concern of our environment. This drum does what it was built to do, and it does it very well.

Comments about Remo Mondo Designer Series Key-Tuned Djembe:

What to say about this drum? I've had it for seven years and always find a new way to use it. Currently using it with a folk duo and a 5-piece acoustic act. I don't know the best way to form a review, so he's a list of tips and praises...

Big sound, keep it tuned regularily. sometimes a piece of tape or moon gel on the underside of the head does wonders in small venues.

Play it with nylon brushes sometimes! Sounds beautiful, great for folk or bluegrass.

This is way better for accompaniment than a cajon. If you're deciding between the two, get this.

Yes, I know it's not made of wood, but you can take it on an airplane and play it outside without fear!

Buy a good support system to mount it on your body. It's not light.

If you don't like the finish, it's most likely a wrap. Rip it off, sand it, and paint it to make your drum one of a kind.

Overall, this is one of the pieces of gear I've used more than any. Yes, hand-made wood has a better tone, buy don't hesitate to buy it if you're in the market for a durable, all-purpose djembe.

Comments about Remo Mondo Designer Series Key-Tuned Djembe:

Overall, It's a fantastic drum I'd buy again without hesitation. I feel it would be a welcome addition to any drum kit, home studio or new age love in .er I mean.. drum circle. Just be prepared to listen to the sounds of your cannibals drumming day and night as it is very addictive and seldom sits for long.
The tuners are almost completely carefree when tuning as apposed to the horror stories I've been hearing about rope tuned djembes and the synthetic head is a must when trying to buy for your vegan wife. She originally wanted bongo's but when I showed her some video of a djembe she was isntantly sold. You hit it in the middle for low notes and the edge for high ones. The lows are as low and earth shaking as the neighor kid's car stereo and the highs can be slap or ping depending on how you strike. The rubber bottom is a nice touch and serves to protect the base which is almost always on the floor due to the size of the 14 inch model.
As others have mentioned, The sythetic head did have a bit of a ring (think good hard basketball on a paved court) but a small square of duct tape(you have to use camo) inside near the edge on the head stops the ring nicely...(shhh don't tell my wife, she hasn't noticed the difference yet). The body is very strong and I suspect it would survive someone sitting on it though I wouldnt try it myself as it would be an expensive sxperiement! I got the earth tone one and the finish is textured, is quite tough, does not flake off when handled and gives the body a nice no slip grip when sitting with your legs crossed around it.
There aren't many vegan options out there...she didn't want animal skin heads..and it is fairly expensive compared to rope tuned animal skinned units offered but I tihnk the tuning, toughness and strking good looks more than make up the difference. You pay dearly for the synthetic heads but the quality is worth it in my opinion and they may actually live longer due to skins being effected by time, the weather, and maybe even a hungry rogue mouse that moves in for the winter. The head has not absorbed any hand oils in the couple months we've been passing it around and looks like the day it arrived...in my house, that's amazing.I can't say "for the money" since I don't have any other 14 inch djembes to compare it too . I think it's a good deal because she liked it.

An Excellent and Highly Versatile Professional Dr

Comments about Remo Mondo Designer Series Key-Tuned Djembe:

These are professional instruments. Although amateurs and beginners can enjoy these excellent drums, only players with advanced technique will truly be be able to release and control the incredible variety of tones they can produce. Skilled drummers constantly and intuitively adjust their hand positions in order to mute or allow various degrees of ringing. The user review comments about the ringing tones are made by players with apparently limited technique. It is also possible that these same players have not tuned their drums properly before playing them. As for whether or not they sound like 'authentic" rope-tuned djembes, in the hands of a genuinely skilled hand percussionist, "traditional" djembe's pale by comparison.Further, anyone who has ever tuned a rope drum will surely appreciate that the Remo Djembe (which comes with a tuning wrench) can be tuned in less than 5 minutes - this can be critical when needing to tune to a specific pitch before a performance and having limited time to do so.Unlike wooden drums with "natural" heads, these hold their tuning very, very well and are far less affected by changes in temperature and humidityThe 14" version is very popular and you will see them being played on stages all over the world by some of the finest percussionists in the world (for example, Ernie Adams and Gumbi Ortiz, who play with Al Di Meola).

    Black 25" X 14" Remo Djembe

Comments about Remo Mondo Designer Series Key-Tuned Djembe:

I bought this drum because it looked like the most bang for the buck, and I was well pleased. I don't play drums at all but I have played guitar for 41 years and I know what sounds good to me. I was a little hesitant about buying because several of the reviews complained about a ringing sound they didn't like. Well, the drum arrived, (right when you said it would) and I got my son-in-law, who is a drummer, to play it on some songs we were working on and we all liked what we heard. To me the ringing sound gave the drum an extra quality which makes the drum more versatile. The drum was in tune right out of the box with the exception of one lug which we turned less than a quarter of a turn. I was very pleased with the buying experience from beginning to end and would recommend this drum to anyone.
Well built. It arrived in tune. Nice looking drum.

Comments about Remo Mondo Designer Series Key-Tuned Djembe:

I'm a drummer that grabbed a djembe for times when we're just hanging out working on new ideas without the electric guitars. I'm not an expert at world percussion, so my review may not be for those of you looking for the perfect instrument.

I used a 15% off coupon to get it cheaper and I think it's a pretty good value for my use-case.

I had a lot of trouble deciding between the 12" and 14" djembe (I found a video describing the 12"h-24"t size as perfect for a 5'10" guy but I'm a little taller). I wanted a super deep bass note and enough playing surface to hit with my meat sticks. Ordering online makes these things hard. I got the djembe and it definitely fits perfect but I still went to a local guitar center and tried the 14" model. I'm super glad I went with the 12. The 14 is way harder to comfortably hold between my legs, though the 1" height difference didn't bother me as much as I thought it would.

Anyway, other than the fit, let's talk about the sound... I'm stunned. I think the bass note is awesome and the 14" was unnecessary. I even mic'ed it up with a kick mic to be excessive about it.

I've only played it a few hours, but the most important things to me were the sound (great) and comfort of fit (again, great).

Comments about Remo Mondo Designer Series Key-Tuned Djembe:

Just got it checked the construction, *Bearing Edges for clean up, look around in particular. Generally, all "OK".Not quite "perfect" routes on the Bearing edges. I'm talk'en 1 - 1.5 mm dips likely from start, stop of router? (For the technically "particular" I comment it-tone affecting... well it's not a snare drum. How many can one take apart and sound check?). Anyway, it is a composite like fiberglass in that regard. Looks like a 14 in Snare Shell embedded in a Bell then bottom Sound tube--3piece sections. This has 8 lugs, once fairly tight, all came to the same tap-pitch at each lug.Too technical? :) skip it... I am a bit granular since have a machine shop background... not good? :)Regarding tuning, cook'till-done. However -I noticed I got "physically" better resonant-tone when got on the tighter side. Counter intuitive? I guess that depends! Sympathetic resonation even with this composite is in play here--especially with certain frequencies. A tad on the looser side and it was dampened more than low pitched. Got tighter and got more bass. Yes w/the ringing-sustain. These are not porus "wood" which dampens and Hyde-skin-heads. Gel will take that out. Nonetheless sound good, yes! And I like that "sustain", if even "ring"... *unlike a Snare drum with a too tight batter head. Again use gel otherwise--I'd put it on the underside once located that "spot".

Comments about Remo Mondo Designer Series Key-Tuned Djembe:

I bought this about 2 weeks ago, and can't stop playing it! It has great range, and is loud enough so that you can actually hear it over a full drum set (not that it's always that loud. It can go that loud well). The drum seems indestructible, and two or three of my 4-year-oldish sibling have been caught standing on top of the drum head, and have done no damage. Very satisfied with the quality of the product! We are currently using it with our Sunday worship gatherings with friends, and other jam sessions we have. Definitely worth the price.
