A thirty year guitarist and composer, I took up the harmonica in 2012. The Marine Band 1896 has a long storied history and was the choice of harps from Lennon to Dylan, if one considers only the pop/rock/folk form of music this harp was applied to, and this 1896 apparently has a reputation of being the standard that sets the standard. It is not undeserved. It is quality made with solid and secured metal or nickel plates, a fine wood comb, and projects a powerful, piercing, clear, clean biting sound, slightly mechanical. But it plays fast, and hits the notes dead on. I would not buy anything less than this harp. However, while they seem to be absent from this site, The Hering 1923 Vintage Harp, with its brass, antique-style, heavier plates and wooden comb (and let's be clear--the wooden comb is, beyond debate, better than any plastic comb) has a superior rich, sonorous sound, the likes of which I have never heard from another harp, and I have played my fair share to this point. The Hering 1923 is Coltrane. The 1896 is martial music. That is THE difference, in a word. While I have an even number of both, and regret neither, the Hering 1923 is the most complete and versitile harmonica sound I have encountered. I recommend getting one. But, if not, the 1896 delivers and satisfies perfectly well, so don't waste time with the nonsense.

This is a good little harmonica but is way overpriced. It is comparable to the Suzuki Folkmaster in tune and quality except for the way it is nailed together and it is twice the price. True, you seldom have to disasemble a hormonica but you will sonner or later and for a couple of dollars more, the Hohner special 20 is easier to work on and is a little slicker design.

Comments about Hohner 1896 Marine Band Harmonica:

There is no doubt--none whatsoever--that a Marine Band harmonica is one of the best sounding harmonicas in the world. The bluesy tone of the wood comb cant be beat. I certainly have a bunch of them. But dont let any new harp players on here be fooled. There are significant problems to playing a Marine Band. I also contend that quality control at the Hohner factory is poor. MB harps come out all different, you never know what you are going to get. As for problems, here are what I've experienced with Marine Bands:

    1) the wooden comb warps, that is the holes shift. Holes you play a lot tend to "move around." Your 4 hole will open up wider, thus "pinching" the 3 and 5, making them smaller and harder to play.

    2) the wooden comb swells out when it gets moist with the moisture of your lips. If you play and MB for even 30 or 40 minutes, the wooden comb will bulge out and rip your lips up while you play. I find the Special 20 much easier to play, and to solo on, than an MB. The plastic comb of the Special 20 wont warp or swell.

    3) the MB has those nasty metal rails along the top and bottom of the comb, again rendering it hard to solo.

Some guys I know love Marine Band harps and would never give them up. Fine. Again, these are fantastic sounding harps, but with so many other choices on the market, I dont usually buy MBs any more. Special 20s are my favorite, Golden Melody's are terrific, and best of all, the Suzuki Manji

    Marine Blues

Comments about Hohner 1896 Marine Band Harmonica:

I still consider myself a beginner at the harmonica (though I do admit I can jam pretty damn well) I only own 3 harmonicas, including the marine.

I own a Hohner Blues harp, the pro harp (black one), and of course, the marine and I must say that the marine is by far my favorite. I do wish it wouldn't cut my lips as much...

Compared to those two, the marine has a richer sound. And it is louder, to my ears anyway.

Comments about Hohner 1896 Marine Band Harmonica:

This harmonica is excellent overall. The tuning is great, notes are very easy to bend, and construction is perfect. This harmonica is about 5 times as expensive as a decent low end harp, but nonetheless I would still recommend it to a beginner because of the ease of use. The wooden comb, a notable feature on more expensive harps looks nice, but functions exactly the same as plastic ones. The primary genre for the marine band is blues, because of its bendabillity, but it would work well for anything

Comments about Hohner 1896 Marine Band Harmonica:

This little harmonica a bit overpriced to other like Seydel and Suzuki. Both are wooden combs but with Marine band you have swells out when it gets moist with the moisture of your lips. If you play and MB for even a long period of time, the wooden comb will bulge out and rip your lips up while you play also the reed plates are rough too if you look at the four corns you will see the reed plates and the comb are not smooth the biggest problem is the nails, you can't do any work until the nail are replaces. However There is no doubt--none whatsoever--that a Marine Band harmonica is one of the best sounding harmonicas in the world.

Comments about Hohner 1896 Marine Band Harmonica:

The Marine Band has to be without a doubt the most responsive harmonica I own. The minute you blow into it the notes effortlessly fly out of it; like running water or a knife going through butter. The Marine Band really cuts through the mix of other instruments in ways that I have not seen other harps do. The tone is great! It speaks with an amazing clarity and has a rich and beautiful timbre that is tight and incredibly focused, yet lush and warm at the same. It is much brighter than the Hohner Blues Harp Overall the Marine Band is a very musically versatile instrument. It will do what you tell it to. If you want to play screaming solos, rock, cry the blues, folk, make your harmonica sing or if you are nuts about tone, this is the harp for you. The Marine Band is ideal for single note playing (you do have to pucker more than you would with bigger harps like Lee Oskar). Additionally, it is comfortable and smooth on the lips, and the comb is sealed off a lot better than the Blues harp. It?s easy to hold and it fits perfectly in the Hohner neck rack (if you are a guitar player like me) without moving around. This harp delivers the sound that I hear in my head without fear of being held back in my musical ideas because of poor construction. Do yourself a favor and buy one, you will be amazed at what you hear coming out of this little harp. Thanks Hohner for a great product!

Comments about Hohner 1896 Marine Band Harmonica:

I use Blues Harps and the Special Twenty made by Hohner. They're all fine instruments. But, the Marine Band is still the most reliable, most rugged, and has the clearest tone of them all.

Comments about Hohner 1896 Marine Band Harmonica:

I purchased this harmonica for my 92 year old Uncle. My Uncle purchased a Hohner Pocket Pal while in Germany when he was serving in the U S Army during World War II. He still has the harmonica and it still sounds great. We have not been able to find another harmonica that sounded anything near as good as the one he bought during WWII. He still has the original box the old one came in and still plays it ( he has neuropathy in his hands and can't play his guitar or mandolin anymore) and it still sounds great but wanted another one, I purchased one for him for Father's Day! He is very happy with it and loves the sound....he plays them both every day.

Comments about Hohner 1896 Marine Band Harmonica:

I was given a Marie Band by my father when I was 16 years old.
I did not think it was cool at the time and let it sit in a a drawer for 50, yes I said 50 years.
I took it out two years ago, and it sparked and interest that has turned into a raging fire.
It not only still plays, but sounds great.
If it needs adjusted a little research will tell you that it is not all that hard to do.
No matter what you have in your Harmonica arsenal, and I have several a set of Marine Band harps is a must.

My great grandmother gave me one of these when i was young, and when she passed away, I kept her tradition alive by playing my Marine Band. I have been playing for 12 years and this harmonica is practically the les paul of harmonicas in my eyes. the sound is excellent, and I never would play anything else. No way no how.

Comments about Hohner 1896 Marine Band Harmonica:

This is a good little harmonica but is way overpriced. It is comparable to the Suzuki Folkmaster in tune and quality except for the way it is nailed together and it is twice the price. True, you seldom have to disasemble a hormonica but you will sonner or later and for a couple of dollars more, the Hohner special 20 is easier to work on and is a little slicker design.

I still play the one my Dad had on Saipan in the Navy during WWII. It STILL kicks butt! Tried a Special 20, didn't like the tone or feel of the plastic comb. Have a Blues Harp as well. It doesn't seem to be as smooth as the MB. The MB WAILS. My favorite harp, hands down. They sound great acoustic or amp'd through my Green Bullet harp mic.

Comments about Hohner 1896 Marine Band Harmonica:

I'm a begginer and I tried previously buying like a 10-pack of cheap harmonicas, and the sound of this one just blows away the cheap ones. You're much better off buying one of these harmonicas than buying 10 cheap ones.
This harmonica has a lovely, warm and woody sound.

Comments about Hohner 1896 Marine Band Harmonica:

I'm brand new to harp playing. After research I chose this one in the key of C. I understand what other reviewers meant about cutting into your lip. There is an edge on the marine band that does this, I don't see much of a way around it. Other than that, it's a great sounding instrument.

I have played a lot of different harps over the last 45 years. With my modded Fender Blues De Ville, or my other larger amps. Marine Band has the best honk for me. I sometimes blow Big Rivers, Golden Melodies for country and folk stuff. But for the Honk of the Hard Blues, with a Crystal Mike of your choice, ain't nothing better than the good old Marine Band. So far they have all arrived in Key. Keep the Da Blues alive.
