There is no doubt--none whatsoever--that a Marine Band harmonica is one of the best sounding harmonicas in the world. The bluesy tone of the wood comb cant be beat. I certainly have a bunch of them. But dont let any new harp players on here be fooled. There are significant problems to playing a Marine Band. I also contend that quality control at the Hohner factory is poor. MB harps come out all different, you never know what you are going to get. As for problems, here are what I've experienced with Marine Bands:
1) the wooden comb warps, that is the holes shift. Holes you play a lot tend to "move around." Your 4 hole will open up wider, thus "pinching" the 3 and 5, making them smaller and harder to play.
2) the wooden comb swells out when it gets moist with the moisture of your lips. If you play and MB for even 30 or 40 minutes, the wooden comb will bulge out and rip your lips up while you play. I find the Special 20 much easier to play, and to solo on, than an MB. The plastic comb of the Special 20 wont warp or swell.
3) the MB has those nasty metal rails along the top and bottom of the comb, again rendering it hard to solo.
Some guys I know love Marine Band harps and would never give them up. Fine. Again, these are fantastic sounding harps, but with so many other choices on the market, I dont usually buy MBs any more. Special 20s are my favorite, Golden Melody's are terrific, and best of all, the Suzuki Manji

This is a good little harmonica but is way overpriced. It is comparable to the Suzuki Folkmaster in tune and quality except for the way it is nailed together and it is twice the price. True, you seldom have to disasemble a hormonica but you will sonner or later and for a couple of dollars more, the Hohner special 20 is easier to work on and is a little slicker design.

Comments about Hohner 1896 Marine Band Harmonica:
My great grandmother gave me one of these when i was young, and when she passed away, I kept her tradition alive by playing my Marine Band. I have been playing for 12 years and this harmonica is practically the les paul of harmonicas in my eyes. the sound is excellent, and I never would play anything else. No way no how.

Comments about Hohner 1896 Marine Band Harmonica:
Enjoy practicing and entertaining others. The Hohner Hamonica is very simple to use and pick up melodies quickly to entertain with. I have only two regrets.(1)that I didn't start playing the harmonica decades ago and (2)trying to find a tool small enough to disassemble the front plates for maintenance.I purchased a multifunctional tool that allows one to work on watches but it was not small enough to turn the heads of the screws holding the front plate on.Any suggestions? Once I can find the correct tool that will allow me to maintain and clean my harmonic I would gladly raise my four star to five. It's a great instrument for novice and professional alike.

Comments about Hohner 1896 Marine Band Harmonica:
Recently I pulled a long forgotten Marine Band C Harmonica out of a storage box. Still in pristine condition with great tonal quality. Will finally have to learn to play it after half a century. And oh yes, there was a barely legible price sticker on the bottom of the box...[$]!
