Actually got one of these mandolins with the guitar package but im going to review it seperately here. First off i received the mando in 2 days from MF, awesome shipping time! When i first got it the action was super high and both G strings were "dead" they didnt sound right at all. i thought maybe i had gotten a lemon but i went ahead and changed strings (which i had planned on doing anyways) and the g strings sounded much better. not sure what was wrong with the factory string but if you get this mando the first thing you need to do is toss them in the trash (or save them for emergency spares)

now the action was so high when you would tune the mando open and then fret the first fret it would pull the note way sharp. cant have that so i filed the nut slots to lower the action as well as sanded the saddle and lowered it at the bridge end as well. i had some buzzing so i leveled the frets and recrowned and finished them. now all is perfect. my father in law is a mando player and he says it has the lowest action hes ever seen and it has absolutely no buzzing or dead frets! im not a luthier or guitar tech, i just did some research online to learn how to do the things it needed. lastly i replaced the pick guard with a custom curly maple wooden piece i made. i think it looks pretty cool and sets the mando apart

anyways if you get this mando be prepared to adjust some things before its really playable but at this price point i think its worth it, especially if you can do it yoursself (YOU CAN!). ive seen this same exact mandolin sold under a different name brand for over twice as much money

This entry level mandolin succeeds in providing a basic and serviceable instrument for very little money. I purchased this as a way to explore adding mandolin chops to my repertoire. Two issues come to mind while playing and working with this mandolin. However, I think they are to be expected when playing a relatively inexpensive instrument.

1. Tuning: The tuning machines look nice with the exposed gear, though they are not as precise as I like. Having played many other instruments of various qualities, it seems that the better instruments will spend more money on tuning machines with higher gear ratios that allow for more precise tuning. It takes time to get used to how much "play" is in each tuning machine.

2. Intonation: I have adjusted the position of the bridge on the body as well as the height to get the mandolin to play more in tune as I ascend the neck. It will take more adjustments to get it even more dialed in, though my intention is to practice more than I actually play this out at gigs. I found that my A string has an issue around the 14th fret where I cannot cleanly fret the note without it sounding like the note at the 15th fret. Upon closer inspection, I can see that the fret wire is not completely straight across the neck and has a slight warp to it.

To sum up, you get what you pay for. As an entry-level instrument, I am happy with this purchase. I can practice with an instrument that will allow me to explore the basic concepts of playing a mandolin. If I decide to make an investment in a better mandolin, I will know that this Rogue mandolin will have played its part in helping me improve my chops and feel like I earned the upgraded instrument.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

This was a good choice for me where I am Left handed, I just reversed all th e strings and removed the pick gaurd.
The only problem was the one of the G STRINGS WAS BAD AND WOULD NOT VIBRATE CLEARLY SO I HAD TO REPLACE IT.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

The first mandolin I received had a terribly misaligned bridge so that the strings did not even cover the neck. Musicians Friend made the exchange with ease. The second also had a misaligned bridge but the problem was minimal. Still playable and for the price I am quite satisfied.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

Absolutely, positively, a suitable mandolin to learn on. Never having tried a mandolin before, that's exactly what I wanted in a low-cost instrument.

Right out of the box, the action is low and the setup is accurate enough to make it playable. Yes, I can hear that some adjustment would be desirable, and before I use this in performance I will lower the nut slots maybe 0.010" and move the bridge maybe 1/8".

Overall, I am delighted with this instrument and with Musician's Friend.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

I play string instruments for years, and got this one on a new years deal just for the thrill of the new instrument. I am no expert on mandolins by any means, but I was able to strum songs in no time. At the price, this is incredible value - the instrument is solid, there's weight to it and it feels like a real thing, sound coming out of it is surprising for the price. If there is anything I might put as a flaw it would be the tuners - there's a bit of inconsistency when turning the knob, winding it for half-circle will do minuscule tonal change, and the second half-circle will do like twice as much.. But hey, I don't care. I love this piece.

This is an absolute bargain for anyone wanting to start playing mandolin. It's very well-made, beautiful to look at, and sounds good. It was already set up from the factory, and I'm already playing. I mostly play guitar, but wanted to learn mandolin. This was just perfect, and Musician's Friend shipped it fast, free & safe all the way to Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

Best money I ever spent! Great learning model. Great action you can adjust yourself. I checked out youtube reviews on this model before purchasing. The only thing I would add, to save time, is to lower the bridge with the thumb screws "before" tuning all the way up for the first time, or the screws won't turn. Lower both thumb screws all the way on the bridge and only raise up a tiny bit until all frets play like they should. If needed position bridge until the 12th fret is a full octave note with an open string. Then tune to the proper key. It stays in tune, well built. The metal string cover falls off from time to time, but is not really a problem and doesn't effect sound or playing.

I bought one of these to learn on, with the intent of buying a better mando later on. I really should have sent this one back from day one. Terribly high action, terrible playability, and really weak tone. The only reason I kept it was that is was a gift from a family member.

After a few months, things began to get even worse. Neck started separating from the body, rendering it unplayable. Called Musicians Friend, but it was out of the short warranty, and there was nothing they could do... except try to sell me a new one.

Save your money, and get a better offering from the likes of Kentucky. You'll be glad you did.
