Actually got one of these mandolins with the guitar package but im going to review it seperately here. First off i received the mando in 2 days from MF, awesome shipping time! When i first got it the action was super high and both G strings were "dead" they didnt sound right at all. i thought maybe i had gotten a lemon but i went ahead and changed strings (which i had planned on doing anyways) and the g strings sounded much better. not sure what was wrong with the factory string but if you get this mando the first thing you need to do is toss them in the trash (or save them for emergency spares)

now the action was so high when you would tune the mando open and then fret the first fret it would pull the note way sharp. cant have that so i filed the nut slots to lower the action as well as sanded the saddle and lowered it at the bridge end as well. i had some buzzing so i leveled the frets and recrowned and finished them. now all is perfect. my father in law is a mando player and he says it has the lowest action hes ever seen and it has absolutely no buzzing or dead frets! im not a luthier or guitar tech, i just did some research online to learn how to do the things it needed. lastly i replaced the pick guard with a custom curly maple wooden piece i made. i think it looks pretty cool and sets the mando apart

anyways if you get this mando be prepared to adjust some things before its really playable but at this price point i think its worth it, especially if you can do it yoursself (YOU CAN!). ive seen this same exact mandolin sold under a different name brand for over twice as much money

This entry level mandolin succeeds in providing a basic and serviceable instrument for very little money. I purchased this as a way to explore adding mandolin chops to my repertoire. Two issues come to mind while playing and working with this mandolin. However, I think they are to be expected when playing a relatively inexpensive instrument.

1. Tuning: The tuning machines look nice with the exposed gear, though they are not as precise as I like. Having played many other instruments of various qualities, it seems that the better instruments will spend more money on tuning machines with higher gear ratios that allow for more precise tuning. It takes time to get used to how much "play" is in each tuning machine.

2. Intonation: I have adjusted the position of the bridge on the body as well as the height to get the mandolin to play more in tune as I ascend the neck. It will take more adjustments to get it even more dialed in, though my intention is to practice more than I actually play this out at gigs. I found that my A string has an issue around the 14th fret where I cannot cleanly fret the note without it sounding like the note at the 15th fret. Upon closer inspection, I can see that the fret wire is not completely straight across the neck and has a slight warp to it.

To sum up, you get what you pay for. As an entry-level instrument, I am happy with this purchase. I can practice with an instrument that will allow me to explore the basic concepts of playing a mandolin. If I decide to make an investment in a better mandolin, I will know that this Rogue mandolin will have played its part in helping me improve my chops and feel like I earned the upgraded instrument.

My first mandolin was a Kentucky. It cost me five times as much as the Rogue but the action was just terrible, not fun to play at all. Then one day I saw this used Rogue hanging in a music shop. I picked it up and WOW!!! It was a zillion times easier to play and better sounding. Those super fast tremolo picking techniques are now a breeze. I have put this on dozens of recordings and everyone loves it. Especially me. Thanks for building such a fine instrument at such a great price.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

After 40 years of playing guitar I decided to branch out a bit and try learning the mandolin. Having bought Rouge products before I was less than concerned with the negative reviews. It's true, you get what you pay for but with Rouge I have always got more than my moneys worth. Straight out of the box, with some tuning, the mandolin was ready to play. Within 15 minutes of watching some youtube instructional videos, I was playing Rolling in My Sweet Baby's Arms. The instrument stays in tune and has a fairly nice tone. There was a buzz on the top G string at the nut but after a few days of playing it has vanished.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

If you've ever wanted to learn mandolin this little gem is a steal. I recently compared it to an Ibanez that costs at least three times as much. They were relatively the same. Yes I am a beginner and don't yet know the finer details to look for. But the Rogue has very nice sound and fretting. The finish is very good and the tuners have held quite well. For the money, you won't be disappointed with the purchase.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

I bought this for my daughter, I was surprised at the excellent fit and finish for such a low price. The setup out of the box was terrible. First, go and buy a quality set of Martin strings, and a clip on tuner before you attempt to follow the setup instructions. I'm not a mandolin player, but after an hour or so I had it sounding pretty good. As far as tone, etc., better to ask an experienced player. But for a starter instrument for my daughter it is an incredible buy. If she doesn't stick with it then I'm out very little. I'm even messing around with it some myself. I'll keep it for me if nothing else. You can't go wrong at this price, I like it.

My son is rehearsing for a led zeppelin show at his school of rock program. The music director asked for a volunteer to play mandolin on a couple of songs, and he decided to give it a try. I found this for him on MF, and it is perfect for its intended purpose. Its a nice sounding instrument, it stays in tune, and sounds much better than I thought it would at this price point.

As always, MF shipping and service is fantastic as well.

First mandolin so price was and issue, deal of the day made up my mind. Very satisfied with it and the delivery time. Not a bad looking instrument for theprice. If mine is an example of these mandolins, then I would recommend them to anyone wishing to try a new instrument without worrying about cost.

I ended up sending two of these back due to different manufacturing defects. But Musician's Friend's awesome customer service made this no problem. When I finally got the mandolin that worked, it was great. Sounds just fine and plays nice. I even took it to a local music store and played it next to mandolins 5 times as much and it sounded comparable. I'd highly recommend this to anyone looking for a starter mandolin.

beginners..I changed out the strings, now the tailpiece cover will not clip back on..I'll have
