Actually got one of these mandolins with the guitar package but im going to review it seperately here. First off i received the mando in 2 days from MF, awesome shipping time! When i first got it the action was super high and both G strings were "dead" they didnt sound right at all. i thought maybe i had gotten a lemon but i went ahead and changed strings (which i had planned on doing anyways) and the g strings sounded much better. not sure what was wrong with the factory string but if you get this mando the first thing you need to do is toss them in the trash (or save them for emergency spares)

now the action was so high when you would tune the mando open and then fret the first fret it would pull the note way sharp. cant have that so i filed the nut slots to lower the action as well as sanded the saddle and lowered it at the bridge end as well. i had some buzzing so i leveled the frets and recrowned and finished them. now all is perfect. my father in law is a mando player and he says it has the lowest action hes ever seen and it has absolutely no buzzing or dead frets! im not a luthier or guitar tech, i just did some research online to learn how to do the things it needed. lastly i replaced the pick guard with a custom curly maple wooden piece i made. i think it looks pretty cool and sets the mando apart

anyways if you get this mando be prepared to adjust some things before its really playable but at this price point i think its worth it, especially if you can do it yoursself (YOU CAN!). ive seen this same exact mandolin sold under a different name brand for over twice as much money

This entry level mandolin succeeds in providing a basic and serviceable instrument for very little money. I purchased this as a way to explore adding mandolin chops to my repertoire. Two issues come to mind while playing and working with this mandolin. However, I think they are to be expected when playing a relatively inexpensive instrument.

1. Tuning: The tuning machines look nice with the exposed gear, though they are not as precise as I like. Having played many other instruments of various qualities, it seems that the better instruments will spend more money on tuning machines with higher gear ratios that allow for more precise tuning. It takes time to get used to how much "play" is in each tuning machine.

2. Intonation: I have adjusted the position of the bridge on the body as well as the height to get the mandolin to play more in tune as I ascend the neck. It will take more adjustments to get it even more dialed in, though my intention is to practice more than I actually play this out at gigs. I found that my A string has an issue around the 14th fret where I cannot cleanly fret the note without it sounding like the note at the 15th fret. Upon closer inspection, I can see that the fret wire is not completely straight across the neck and has a slight warp to it.

To sum up, you get what you pay for. As an entry-level instrument, I am happy with this purchase. I can practice with an instrument that will allow me to explore the basic concepts of playing a mandolin. If I decide to make an investment in a better mandolin, I will know that this Rogue mandolin will have played its part in helping me improve my chops and feel like I earned the upgraded instrument.

Everyone that hears this Rouge mandolin, can't believe how inexpensive it was.
I've had it for 1 month and can play it. Out of the package I tweaked the bridge and tuned it.
What a great sounding mandolin. How can you go wrong. Need I say any more.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

I was pleasantly surprised by this mandolin. I bought it because it was cheap and I thought it might be fun to play. I was impressed with the action, it is spot on all the way down the neck with no buzz. Perhaps I was just lucky and got a good one. I did have to adjust the bridge slightly for intonation, but that was the only adjustment. The build and finish on mine is quite nice for the price. I can't vouch for the quality of the tone having never heard a mandolin live. I replaced the stock strings with Martin M400's which improved the sound as sustain. Though I bought it for fun, I now play it almost weekly in a worship band.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

You get what you pay for. This is a perfect mandolin if you are just trying to pick one up and try playing. The instrument itself sounds great. I was surprised at how little I had to do to actually set it up to get it to sound as good as it did. My one issue is that it looked really rough around the edges. The fretboard was extremely dirty when it arrived and almost seemed like a used product.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

Had an easy to find buzz/rattle in the sting holder/saddle. Maybe should've been noticed before shipping. Easy fix not worth sending back. I ordered sunburst but gut black as a conformation. Should've checked closer. But was happy with the look of the black. I just have too many black instruments.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

OMG!!! for starters. I have been messin with a mandolin off and on since 1983 or so. I have played some of those really expensive Gibson's and other makes. I have a Rogue lap steel with 3 legs and had found it was a great value and an amazing axe so I saw this mandolin on sale and I had a few friends tell me to try this mandolin and I am glad I did. I heard a few negative nightmare stories about this Mandolin too. I do not believe those negative stories now. I unboxed this mandolin and tuned it up and did an intonation on it and it plays well. I may do a fine tune adjustment on the action it will need a MINOR fine adjustment. There are a lot of you tube videos to show you how its done or if you can, get to a luthier to do a total set up for you. Every instrument will need a set up. ans while you set it up you may want to get a set of good strings. i like GHS strings myself. I am going to put the set of GHS Bobby Osborne signature set on mine since I ordered a set along with this mandolin. There is no truss rod adjustment because the way this is built. The bridge is adjustable but watch some videos on how to do a set up or see a luthier. There is an instruction sheet with the mandolin in the box. Now once I got this tuned up I played it and was highly impressed with its tone even with the factory strings. I would say get a humidifier and a good case and a good strap. yes you can use a guitar strap. with an A frame like this is you can tie the strap to the headstock like they do to guitars and there is a strap pin at the tail of the mandolin to hook it up. Then its time to play some music. I will more than likely do a little filing on the nut and it will not be much more than a trim to get the action lowered and this is very very slight adjustment. Other than that, this is a great value. you get a good case and a strap and a set of strings and a humidifier and you will not break the bank. YES you can get a gig bag. Get this mandolin for jam sessionand have some fun.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

I bought this for my daughter who wants to learn mandolin. I have built and repaired guitars before and am usually pretty picky about instruments. I rarely recommend starting with something cheap because it often leads to someone giving up. However - for the money - this Rogue was every bit as playable as any of the other beginner models out there. most costing 4-5 times as much. My plan was to buy it, level the frets, lower the nut a bit and give it a proper setup. If something went wrong, it didn't cost very much!

Setup: 1) remove the lousy strings it comes with, go buy a decent set of light strings. 2) while the strings are off, take a FLAT sanding block (400 grit or so) or a sharpening stone and lightly run it up and down the fret board until you can see every fret has been sanded slightly. 3) using some 600 - 1500 automotive sanding paper, and your finger, polish the tops of the frets till smooth. This gives them a basic crown. Use some masking tape or a metal fret shield to protect the fingerboard - or don't.. 4) pop the nut off, sand about 1/16th of an inch off the bottom, glue it back on with a dot of super glue. 5) restring, adjust the saddle height, intonation, and enjoy.

This whole process took me about 30-40 minutes. Mine now has crazy-low action, is dead level, no buzzes or fret-outs or anything. Sound-wise, it's always going to be an inexpensive mando - don't expect earth-shattering tone here. Playability-wise, you'd have to be a whole lot more to get one off the shelf that plays this nicely, once you take a little time.
