OVERVIEW

Responsive new pad design.

MPD218 is a MIDI-over-USB pad controller designed for producers, programmers, musicians and DJs. Its blend of MPC controls and technologies mesh with USB connectivity brings the feel of classic beat making into computer music production.

Experience the Difference
The first improvement agreed upon over the development cycle were the Thick Fat MPC pads, a new design that creates an unprecedented user experience. The MPD218 also has an expanded control set of six knobs in three banks. This enables you increased control over your sounds and effects.

MIDI information is sent over its plug-and-play USB interface for use on Mac or PC, eliminating the need for drivers. The USB connection powers the MPD218 so the included USB cable is all you need.

Along with the improved functionality, the MPD218 features iOS compatibility using the Camera Connection Kit (sold separately) and included free software. Titles include: Akai Pro MPC Essentials, Big Bang Drums and Big Bang Cinema from Sonivox, Ableton Live Lite, and Software Preset Editor.

Many years of research and customer feedback have led directly to some of the most capable pad controllers Akai has developed. It is this constant contact with the user base that makes Akai such an enduring brand. These MPDs are the perfect bridge between your creativity and your computer-based studio.

Comments about Akai Professional MPD218 Pad Controller:

I am very pleased with this Akai drum pad controller. The pads are large enough to do two finger drum rolls, and they have a nice feel to them. The set up with the included software was very straightforward, although there is one glitch - you have to shut down your DAW software while it is running or you get an error message about MIDI resources. This issue is noted on the Akai product forum so I was able to find out about it and work around it - but it should be addressed. Second issue is that I find the pads are a bit too sensitive - I guess I have heavy fingers - for the first couple days, until I learned to play a bit softer moderately, most of my hits were velocity 127 - it would be nice if you could select a different velocity curve. One last negative, in order to register and use some of the included software, I had to jump through some very significant hoops. I would never purchase SONIVOX Big Bang Drums because they make you use iLok - way too much hassle for me. (For free Big Bang Drums is ok, but the mixing limitations - like you need to EQ your whole drum kit as one - you can't EQ the snare separately from the toms makes it useless for any serious recording.)

5 stars - simplicity of design, small foot print, if it was lost I would buy another immediately.

Comments about Akai Professional MPD218 Pad Controller:

Unit feels solid, rotary knobs feel smooth, editor software is straight ahead, but the pads (even though they feel good) aren't sensitive enough. I want to be able to get "ghost" snare hits, etc. into my patterns. My next step will be to try the electrician's tape mod (see YouTube) or MPC Stuff's Pad Corx mod to try to get better performance from this guy.

I'd recommend, but with the caveat that it's not as sensitive as you'd like (and there's no velocity curve adjustment in the software).

Comments about Akai Professional MPD218 Pad Controller:

The pads seem to have very accurate velocity and sound great with Logic Pro X Drummer plugin. it worked as soon as I plugged it in and was able to play instantly. I'm sure I will have to dig in for a more specific setup but it is always nice when you can get right to it.
