Wow, wow, wow!I bought this package based solely on it's outrageously low price just to see how the mics stacked up. I've got to say I was amazed. The 990 is perfect for vocals or placing in a corner for ambient recordings. It has a vintage sound, look, and feel to it. Comparable to AT2020 in durability and reliability. The 991 is an excellent mic to use as and overhead or to record acoustic instruments. Right now I'm using it on hi-hats and to record my classical guitars. Just plugging it straight in without EQ has given me the best raw classical guitar sound I have ever worked with. Fantastic. It picks up Low Mids to Extreme highs with ease. Overall the best package deal on the market in my opinion. MXL deserves more recognition as a quality microphone manufacturer.

I bought the MXL 990/991 package and I'm very happy, the 990 replaces my SM7B and sounds so much better. I use it mostly for broadcasting on the internet and the 990 is impressive.
I still have to eq this mic like I do all my mics but this one has nice smooth mids and highs, unlike the SM7B that tends to have a bite.
The 991 is ok, not too impressed with it but again for the price it's worth it.
The only down side is when you get the 990/991 package you don't get the shockmount for the 990 as you would if you bought just the 990, I ordered the shockmount and it's a little pricey.
I wish I knew about this mic before I bought my SM7B, I could have saved a lot of money or got four 990s and still saved money!

The 990 is a very good solution for the low cost. I can achieve clear tracks with correct placement and by paying attention to other factors. Very Good mic for the low price. I haven't used the 991 yet, but expect it will be useful for capturing the performer's expressions on acoustic guitar recordings. The added bonus of the Antares mic modeler made this really inexpensive in the overall big picture.

Upon receiving the SECOND product , I was pleased. The first did not work, and was aggravating, considering time involved, etc. It was on sale , so was worth it. The agent that I talked to at Musician's Friend was very helpful. The second microphone was as good as expected. If this type of mic is bought, make sure you have phantom capability on your PA system.

This package is a great buy. Clear, articulate sound. My only complaint is the mic stand adapter for the 990. I apparently over tightened it and it stripped out. I was planning on purchasing a shock mount for it anyway, but those only come with the 990 sold individually not as a bundle as we have here. For some reason musicians friend and guitar center do not carry the mxl shock mount accessory so I'm still searching for one. My highest rated large diaphragm condenser would be the RODE package, but its a lot more cash. Unless your working in a real solid studio (which I'm not) this package will brighten your recordings and round out your sound!

I run the 990 on vocal and 991 on guitar through my mackie 12 with some effects. Headphones on and what a difference in sound and volume. Makes practice time and playing time way more fun!

I used to record demos and songs using the built-in microphone on my iPhone. Since then, I got an iMac with GarageBand, a PreSonus Audiobox, and these.
I'm amazed at the crystal-clear sound quality on both of these mics. They work perfectly with my interface and computer. No static, very little background noise and, obviously, a big upgrade from what I used to record with!
The 990 sounds excellent on vocals and acoustic guitar. I would recommend buying the shockmount separately, as this will make your experience with the mic even better.
The 991 sounds best on the acoustic guitar and on my guitar amp. I even put it up to the speaker on my digital keyboard (since I don't have a MIDI interface) and it sounds surprisingly clear.
I wish I could compare it to other microphones, but as for now I can say that you will not be disappointed with this package. Especially if you are somewhat new to recording like I am.
Also, make sure you buy some good XLR cables. The better the cables are, the better your sound will be.

I have always tried using the least expensive mean possible for recording and I finally go sick of it! I found these mics and thought well they are highly rated and reasonably priced. I mostly use my comPuter to record and these mics have made my recordings much better! The clarity and richness these mics grab from my 12 string fender are amazing!

These mics have worked great in acoustic recording without any eq or effects during tracking. Very good sound straight into mixer and then the interface. Still trying different setups but good sound once I find the right setup. Can't beat the price/quality.

These two mics have the same innards, just presented in different bodies. The 990's are great candidates for modification and can become quite capable performers after capsule and circuit upgrades.
