These are perfect when placed on a stereo bar (a double microphone holder) Point one at the bridge and the other at the 12th fret. Record a single guitar performance onto two separate tracks and then pan them left and right. You won't believe your ears. EQ each on separately and add effects to suite the song. Your going to love your sound.

Not bad once modded

These two mics have the same innards, just presented in different bodies. The 990's are great candidates for modification and can become quite capable performers after capsule and circuit upgrades.

      Great Mics, Great Price

Comments about MXL 990/991 Recording Microphone Package:

Bought this bundle, and it was worth every cent. These two condensers (my first condensers) sound incredible on drums, acoustic guitar, electric guitar amps, and vocals (haven't tried it on anything else). The full EQ response is very noticeable and has upped my recording quality exponentially from my Shure 58's.

My biggest complaint is if you buy this bundle (990/991 together), you don't get the 990 shock mount. The mic clip that you get with this package is flimsy plastic and extremely tedious to mount (you have to unscrew the bottom of the mic and place the mic clip between the two mic parts, like a washer). Since condensers aren't something that should be left out all the time, this gets really annoying. I wish they'd just up the price a little and include the shock mount--until then, you're probably better off buying it separately.

Comments about MXL 990/991 Recording Microphone Package:

I like the microphones Goldish color and the durability. These have been slightly abused in my case.
These came in a recording bundle when I was first beginning to pursue Recording Arts. They were used extensively as Drum Overheads and for various other applications.

It is great that MXL, ART, Behringer, and all these companies are putting out gear that helps people get into this stuff.

These are for beginners or the occasional Amateur/Pro who are hooked on the price and would like a new flavor in their Mic Locker.

Not the greatest mics ever made. Probably near the bottom. But I have never purchased another Large Diaphragm Mic since owning the MXL 990. (I am in the market now, of course.) I was just able to get by with these microphones for a VERY long time. They still work. I still use them both.
They sound good for a cheap mic.
      Look at the price.

Great fidelity at a beginner's price

      By Scott Adams

Comments about MXL 990/991 Recording Microphone Package:

      Buy these.
I've used it for vocals, instruments and many other applications (even live sound at my church!). I also own Neumann, SE, Shure, and Rode mics, and this package is comparable in many areas. I would recommend these mics to anyone starting out, especially with home recording. The shock mount it comes with is also very cool.
Of course it's not a Neumann, but for a home studio, they rock!
Very short money for lots of microphone dynamics and quality.

Comments about MXL 990/991 Recording Microphone Package:

This package is a great buy. Clear, articulate sound. My only complaint is the mic stand adapter for the 990. I apparently over tightened it and it stripped out. I was planning on purchasing a shock mount for it anyway, but those only come with the 990 sold individually not as a bundle as we have here. For some reason musicians friend and guitar center do not carry the mxl shock mount accessory so I'm still searching for one. My highest rated large diaphragm condenser would be the RODE package, but its a lot more cash. Unless your working in a real solid studio (which I'm not) this package will brighten your recordings and round out your sound!

These mics have worked great in acoustic recording without any eq or effects during tracking. Very good sound straight into mixer and then the interface. Still trying different setups but good sound once I find the right setup. Can't beat the price/quality.

          MXL 990/991

          By Perry Cavalieri

Comments about MXL 990/991 Recording Microphone Package:

          .
I bought the MXL 990/991 package and I'm very happy, the 990 replaces my SM7B and sounds so much better. I use it mostly for broadcasting on the internet and the 990 is impressive.
I still have to eq this mic like I do all my mics but this one has nice smooth mids and highs, unlike the SM7B that tends to have a bite.
The 991 is ok, not too impressed with it but again for the price it's worth it.
The only down side is when you get the 990/991 package you don't get the shockmount for the 990 as you would if you bought just the 990, I ordered the shockmount and it's a little pricey.

I wish I knew about this mic before I bought my SM7B, I could have saved a lot of money or got four 990s and still saved money!

These mics are great, especially for the 'stupid deal of the day' price, you can't go wrong. I did a lot of research on them but still bought them despite a little skepticism since I had never used this brand before.
As soon as I plugged them in I was instantly impressed. Don't let the little mic fool you, it is good for anything including vocals. I would not hesitate to buy them again. Those who pick them apart technically are those same people who think they are 'experts' and will find something wrong with anything. You can't go wrong, they are great !

Got the set from SDOD by MF.com. LOve the pencil mike 991 at once. It recorded strongly my Takamine G series. Love the sounds recorded with this mic. Not so sure about the 990- for vocal 'cause I am not a singer. Thank MF.com for the SDeal of the Day. 991 pencil mike is really made my Day. It 'll be a companion with my Takamine forever !!!

Comments about MXL 990/991 Recording Microphone Package:

I bought these a while ago and used the 990 to record my didgeridoo (yes, thats right). It captured exactly how it sounds, which surprised me greatly. Both these mics are good for recording acoustic instruments, like pianos, acoustic guitars, vocals, and orchestral instruments as well. The 991 also handles guitar amps well too; that is, if you have no other mics to use. I do not have any experience recording drums with these mics, but I'm sure they will work as advertised as they have with everything else. The case these mics come with is also very nice and makes storing them less of a pain. I am pleased with these and plan to buy from MXL in the future if I don't have the money for a nice AKG.

After searching the net, far and wide, I came across this lovely little package. The mics sound fantastic, especially for my set-up (Line6 UX-1 DI, XPS laptop, and Nady Phantom Power).

I highly recommend these mics. I also urge buyers to spend a little extra money on a pop filter and good XLR cables for optimal sound quality.

I found these mics and thought well they are highly rated and reasonably priced. I mostly use my comPuter to record and these mics have made my recordings much better! The clarity and richness these mics grab from my 12 string fender are amazing!

Wow, wow, wow!I bought this package based solely on it's outrageously low price just to see how the mics stacked up. I've got to say I was amazed. The 990 is perfect for vocals or placing in a corner for ambient recordings. It has a vintage sound, look, and feel to it. Comparable to AT2020 in durability and reliability. The 991 is an excellent mic to use as and overhead or to record acoustic instruments. Right now I'm using it on hi-hats and to record my classical guitars. Just plugging it straight in without EQ has given me the best raw classical guitar sound I have ever worked with. Fantastic. It picks up Low Mids to Extreme highs with ease. Overall the best package deal on the market in my opinion. MXL deserves more recognition as a quality microphone manufacturer.

The 991 is pretty weak though. I'd buy the MXL 990 with shock moount for the price, and leave the 991 out entirely.

just a great pair nothing comes close for the price value and quality.
at first i thaught the mics were going to be cheap, so i picked them up expecting a cheap sound.... man was i ever wrong, both mics have very unique sounds the mxl 990 is great for vocals and small operations such as acoustic guitars. very nice responce for the bass. now the mxl 991 is my fav out of the 2 because the 991 is a small diaphram. meaning very tight low reaponce. i use the 991 on my cab with a sm57 and it blew me away the clarity is insane, very nice mic i got 2 and i love em. i strongly recomend getting them. i have an audio clip here this is the mxl 991 with a marshall jcm 900 in a 15 inch eminence speaker. no effects used for the clip.
great no cons keep the mics in the case when done, mostiure is a big enemy for any condensor mic.
worth it trust me they are great mic, needed in every mic locker.

Good value for what you are paying for. I have no complaints.
As a set, they certainly make a difference for recording acoustic guitar. That's all I'm using them for. The only thing I didn't like was the mounting option that came with them. But, I knew that going in. For what they are and what they cost, they give me a great option for recording guitar.
                    Seem solid.
Again, for what you pay for, you definitely get it.
