Bought this bundle, and it was worth every cent. These two condensers (my first condensers) sound incredible on drums, acoustic guitar, electric guitar amps, and vocals (haven't tried it on anything else). The full EQ response is very noticeable and has upped my recording quality exponentially from my Shure 58's.

My biggest complaint is if you buy this bundle (990/991 together), you don't get the 990 shock mount. The mic clip that you get with this package is flimsy plastic and extremely tedious to mount (you have to unscrew the bottom of the mic and place the mic clip between the two mic parts, like a washer). Since condensers aren't something that should be left out all the time, this gets really annoying. I wish they'd just up the price a little and include the shock mount--until then, you're probably better off buying it separately.

Not bad once modded

These two mics have the same innards, just presented in different bodies. The 990's are great candidates for modification and can become quite capable performers after capsule and circuit upgrades.

Comments about MXL 990/991 Recording Microphone Package:

So far, incredible sound from these two mics. The 990 has a great quality with the vocals I've recorded, and the 991 sounds as good or better than an SM81 recording acoustic guitars, in my opinion.

Can't beat a pair of versatile microphones for such a low price. No, they are not a $5000 pair...are worth every cent you spend with quality that's up to par.

Comments about MXL 990/991 Recording Microphone Package:

I ordered this pair last year as a Stupid Deal figuring I could use a low end mic solution where I didn't want to setup my good stuff.
I was blown away by the sound and did side by side comparisons with several of my higher priced mics.
These inexpensive mics held their own and in most cases it was hard to distinguish them from the higher price spread.
So I bought another pair when they became available as a Stupid Deal. I'd give it 5 stars if it included an isolation mount.

I have been looking at microphones to record acoustical instruments into Reason at home for a few years now, and this deal came out that was too good to pass up. It does everything I need and I am very happy with the price/ performance of these microphones. I'm sure they are not equivalent to the +$500 microphones out there (not that my old ears could really tell the difference), but for home recording they are outstanding.

I found an option for recording acoustic guitar. I point 1 toward the 12th fret, the other toward the saddle, blend them, and my recordings sound great (for a newbie).
