For the money, its a GREAT pedal. That said, the housing is plastic and the overall feeling is that it is not as substantial and will not hold up as well as a metal unit. The 80 factory presets are useable and editable, though MANY of the elecrtric guitar voices are so noisey as to be unusable; when you are not playing, the background "noise" or sizzle is overwhelmling and very distracting. The noise cancellation editor is helpful but does not remove the problem entirely. Unit has some GREAT acoustic voices and adds chorus, echo, reverbs, phlanging, compressors and delay all at once in a small footprint package. Scrolling to your next favorite voice on the fly is a time-consuming ordeal; I miss being able to access your next favorite voice without having to scroll through the entire library. All said, "bang-for-the-buck," this unit can't be beat!

It's a reasonably good multi-effects pedal, and has a nice price ($70 when I bought it), but it has a few shortcomings. One problem is that it does not have an on/off switch! To turn the unit on or off, you plug or unplug your 1/4" input cable (for battery operation), or your power adaptor. You can imagine the problems this could make with pops and buzzes onstage. I bought a radio shack power adaptor, and just leave it plugged in, so it's not much problem, but if you wanted to use it in battery mode, you have the choice of draining your battery quickly or muting youself to avoid the pop when you unplug the cable. Also, the instruction manual does not come with any kind of listing of what and where the default effects are...very inconvenient! I ended up programming my own effects and laminating a 3x5 card to keep track of what bank and number they were stored in. The noise level is a little high on some of the distortion or cabinet emulator settings, but I sort of expected that with a $70 pedal.

This FX pedal need to be pluggedi to teh effects loop

By Paul S

from LE101JD

This module needs to be plugged into the effects loop of the amp and then t works well and is not noisy, but if you plug guitar into the unit and it into the front of the amp then it may be noisy unless your guitar has a high active output (line level). Plug into the effects loop and enjoy.

This effects pedal is loaded with effects and is easy to use. Definately worth more than its price tag!

Very confusing pedal

By XxFREAKSCENExX

from Hilliard, Oh

This is a decent pedal, if you can learn how to work it correct. I mean I must have spent a week or two trying to figure out how to work this thing. So I suggest that you take youy money and purchase a different brand.

Toom much noise....very unreal effects. The plastic housing is cheap. The combinations of effects are overshawdowed by the noise generated by the unit. You can by mine for $40.00 and it's been played two times!!

it just sounds... well it doesn't sound... it just sucks! with headphones it works really well actually but use it with any amp and you won't get a reasonable sound outta it, way too much hiss and weird noises... i've never heard an effect that sounds this bad. just don't buy it take my good word for it, it sounds good on this website i dunno how... maybe they recorded it through headphones...

It has some good features but makes entirely too much noise with it's effects. It is simply a waste of money. It is the worst processor I have ever delt with.

really good value

By JIM ISER

most effects cost around $70 for a single unit. You might as well pay that price for a unit that has multi effects. A REAL GOOD VALUE FOR YOUR MONEY

A very versatile effects pedal.

Electronics sure have come a long way over the years! Back in the late 70's I had several effects pedas which were generally on the noisy side, and to be able to have pretty much all those effects on a single much quieter pedal, and at an affordable price, is truly something!

Disappointed

At least it works! Some of it's sounds are okay for just banging around on my Strat for fun, but that seems to be about it. I got this as an open box item, reduced, but I'm disappointed in it, mainly because of the noise--way too much hiss. Also it is difficult (for me, anyway) to change or create settings--frustratingly complex--and the manual is mostly geek to me.

Spend your money on a different brand

By Dave-DWrtw

When I was considering the purchase of a new multiFX unit to replace my aging DOD Acoustic1 unit, I selected this because on paper it seemed to have the most bang for the buck compared to comparably priced units made by Behringer, Zoom and Digitech. I downloaded the manuals from each manufacturer's website and read all the previous reviews. Nothing prepared me for the nightmare this has been. The factory presets are substandard. The instructions for editing and storing settings do not work. And customer service at Alesis is non-existent when trying to resolve the issue. Alesis has been aware of the problems for over two years and has made no effort to either redesign the unit or rewrite the manual. I do not ever plan to purchase a product bearing the "Alesis" name again.

Did not work reliably. Some of the pre-sets were horrible. Not a good value, I had to return.

Working band pedal

By tjboogie

from Dallas, TX

Overall, the range of effects is good on this unit, but it is so noisy. The hiss will just drive ya nuts. Additionally, we do one song that has to switch from the wah affect to overdrive with no chance to hit the volume knob on your guitar and the volume difference was agonizing, with no way to adjust it.

noisy and limited

By denny-Qbn_r

Presets are pretty useless for actually performing.Programming is limited (you can only control about 1 param for each effect altho there are sometime 10 graduations of the basic effect).Noise is the real issue. Hiss and more hiss, and if you use any of the distortion/overdrive stuff, you'll absolutely need to use the built in noise gate feature and when you quit playing you'll hear this LOUD hiss trail which gets clamped by the noise gate. But it's just not something you want to use for music you care about.Even the built in tuner is kinda hard to see standing up.I usually like Alesis effects, I think they usually have some of the best DSP algorithms out there and usually Alesis is king of the low end. But this time they missed.

1-Year Follow-Up Review

By The Lone Chicken

from Fostoria, OH

See all my reviews

It's been about a year since I first purchased the Alesis GuitarFX, and overall I am quite happy with it. Not having a list of the presets was a bit irksome, but once I finally figured out how to program it, that ceased to be an issue as I programmed in the effects that I wanted. The "wah" effect leaves something to be desired (I don't use wah much, so that's not a big deal), but other effects (phase, chorus, flange, and echo) sound great. Yes, it's kinda noisy, but it's quieter (and a lot less cumbersome) than the setup of pedals back in "my early years". As for its durability, since I don't jump on or throw my equipment around (LOL), it's holding up just fine for me. There are certainly better pedals out there, but for the price I don't think that the Alesis GuitarFX can be beat.
