Overview

A real cranked-amp interaction inside a pedal.

What happens when you put a real amp, speaker and microphone inside a stompbox and push the whole system into overdrive? The Death By Audio Amp Crash answers with everything from touch-sensitive breakup and crushing fuzz to blooming harmonics, natural feedback and unpredictable sonic chaos. Developed in collaboration with Rainger FX, Amp Crash uses an internal 3W amplifier to drive a real 2" speaker, then captures that moving air with a built-in microphone. Blend the direct amp and mic'd signals to shape the response, push the Gain control into Overload for distortion and oscillation, or add onboard reverb, echo and chorus to take the sound further. With an external speaker output for driving a compatible cabinet, Amp Crash is equally at home as a recording tool, experimental effect or unconventional compact amp.

Real Amp Interaction Instead of Amp Simulation

Amp Crash creates its core sound physically rather than simulating the behavior of a cranked amplifier. Its 3W amp drives the internal 2" speaker, while the built-in microphone captures the speaker moving air inside the pedal. Dedicated DI Out and Mic Out controls let you blend the direct amplifier signal with the mic'd response, opening up different balances of immediacy, compression, harmonics and feedback. Turn up the Gain for increasingly aggressive drive or push it into Overload for distortion and wild oscillation, while Tone moves the amp response from deep and bass-heavy to bright and focused. A switchable mic gate helps keep the internal microphone under control when needed.

Reverb, Echo and Chorus Push Sounds Further

The built-in multi-effects section adds another layer of sound design with selectable reverb, echo and chorus. Reverb moves from compact room ambience to massive, cavernous spaces, while echo delivers tape-style repeats and chorus ranges from lush modulation to metallic flanging textures. Depth changes function with the selected effect, controlling reverb blend, echo blend and feedback, or chorus depth. Time adjusts reverb decay, echo delay time or chorus speed. Turn Depth fully down to bypass the selected effect, or bring it up to transform the already reactive amp-and-mic sound into more expansive and unpredictable textures.

Record Direct or Connect an External Cabinet

Amp Crash can move easily between pedalboard experimentation, direct recording and compact amplification. Its main output combines the DI Out and Mic Out signals, making it easy to capture the interaction between the internal amp, speaker and microphone without setting up a separate mic'd amplifier. Connect an 8-ohm-minimum cabinet rated for at least 3W to the external speaker output and the internal speaker automatically disengages, allowing the onboard amplifier to drive the external cab instead. From responsive overdrive and saturated fuzz to feedback, modulation and experimental textures, the Death By Audio Amp Crash pedal turns real amplifier interaction into a hands-on sound-design instrument.
