Developed in collaboration with Sunn O))), the HalfLife distills the essential elements of the legendary Life Pedal into its most compact and pedalboard-friendly format yet. At its core is a White Face-inspired distortion circuit with three distinct clipping modes, ranging from full-throttle op-amp aggression to smoother asymmetrical crunch and classic symmetrical clipping. A blendable analog octave circuit adds everything from subtle upper harmonics to raging octave-fuzz textures, while an independent MOSFET boost provides additional output for driving amplifiers deeper into saturation. Despite its compact footprint, the HalfLife delivers a remarkable range of sounds while remaining firmly rooted in the amplifier-driven intensity that inspired its creation.

White Face-Inspired Distortion With Three Distinct Clipping Voices

At the heart of the HalfLife is a distortion circuit inspired by the classic White Face design, reimagined with expanded clipping options for greater flexibility across different amplifiers and playing styles. A three-position clipping switch allows players to move between the raw, uncompressed aggression of the Op Amp mode, the smoother response of an asymmetrical silicon-and-LED configuration, and the familiar crunch of traditional symmetrical silicon clipping. Combined with controls for Distortion, Filter and Amplitude, the circuit can produce everything from tight, focused drive tones to massive walls of saturated fuzz while maintaining exceptional clarity and note definition.

Blendable Analog Octave for Harmonic Chaos and Fuzz Saturation

The HalfLife's all-discrete analog octave circuit sits at the front of the signal chain, allowing players to gradually blend in octave-up textures using the dedicated Octave control. Subtle settings add harmonic complexity and upper-octave shimmer, while more aggressive settings transform the pedal into a raging fuzz machine capable of producing clangorous, chaotic textures and rich harmonic overtones. Like many classic analog octave effects, the circuit is monophonic by nature and responds best to single-note playing, particularly above the twelfth fret. An expression pedal input allows real-time control of the octave blend, opening the door to dramatic octave swells and evolving textures during performance.

Independent MOSFET Boost for Maximum Amplifier Saturation

Following the octave and distortion stages is a dedicated all-discrete MOSFET boost designed to push amplifiers harder without dramatically altering the character of the signal. The Magnitude control provides ample output for increasing volume, driving preamp tubes deeper into saturation or tightening the response of already-overdriven amplifiers. Because the boost remains clean throughout its range, it serves as an effective tool for adding impact, enhancing sustain and extracting even more intensity from the distortion circuit that precedes it.

Expression Control and Flexi-Switch Performance Features

The HalfLife was designed with live performance in mind. Independent footswitches allow the octave distortion and boost sections to operate separately, creating a wide variety of gain-staging possibilities. EarthQuaker Devices' Flexi-Switch technology supports both traditional latching operation and momentary switching, enabling players to engage effects for a single passage simply by holding down a footswitch. An expression pedal input allows real-time control of the octave blend, and together with these performance-focused features, makes the HalfLife exceptionally interactive and adaptable in both studio and live environments.
