OVERVIEW

A truly unique overdrive, modeled after the tube-powered Bell and Howell 385 Filmosound projector.

Walrus Audio is extremely excited to announce the new 385 Overdrive that is boastfully responsible for all those adjectives. For decades now, guitarists in search of pure tone have been taking the tube-powered audio sections of vintage film projectors and using it as a guitar amp. Heads up – it sounds amazing. After endless hours of research on vintage Bell and Howell 385 Filmosound projector, Walrus has created a fantastic new overdrive modeled after the projector’s tone. The Bell and Howell 385 gracefully lends itself to create an amazing guitar amp. Its simple, but effective controls, plus dual 6V6 output section make for a simple and extremely responsive amp that has an amazing compressed overdrive when cranked. THIS was the sound and feel Walrus needed to shoot for in an amp-like pedal. The 385 was developed to have the same simple but effective tone control as it’s grandfather. The amp has this as well but bass and treble are stacked behind the single tone knob. With their design breaking them up, Walrus allows for a much wider array of tones to be achieved. The user is able to boost and cut bass and treble, allowing them to be creative with mid-frequency scoops and bumps. The pedal is internally running at 18v, which helps nail the same dynamic feel of the amp in a stomp box. This means it is extremely sensitive to how hard you dig in – just like the amp.

Comments about Walrus Audio 385 Overdrive Effects Pedal:

Been wanting to try a Walrus product and when i read the background on the tone the were trying to cop with this pedal and it was the TSDOTD i took a chance. This pedal plays well with others and kicks buttisimo on its own. I could get into all the specifics and nuances but since typing isn't my forte all I have left to say is it hasn't left the pedal board since day one. Well worth the full price.

Comments about Walrus Audio 385 Overdrive Effects Pedal:

This Overdrive is great, it can warm up your tone, give you as much grit as you need and it really speaks as you push the gain. So satisfied with this purchase.

Comments about Walrus Audio 385 Overdrive Effects Pedal:

I've been eyeing this guy since Walrus released them. I loved the concept and the sound I heard in demos, but I really didn't need another drive and I was content enough with my set-up. When it came up as a Stupid Deal of the Day, and I had just gotten paid, I couldn't pass it up. It was less than what they were selling for used. I put it at the end of my drive chain, and it just opened my sound up incredibly. I didn't plan on it being always on, but I missed it when I turned it off. I play with a lot of dynamics, so playing quite was completely clean with the gain around 11. Fuzz and drive going into was absolutely fantastic! I doubt it will ever come off my board. Especially after playing my first gig with it and everyone coming up to me telling me that it was our best gig yet and that our tone was on point and that it was the biggest we've ever sounded (we're a three-piece).

I won't use it this way, but cranking the gain gives it a cool splatty fuzz sound.

My only complaint is the power jack the use was a bit recessed and it made the plug feel a little lose. Using a straight plug helped this and it should be fine mounted on a board with a power supply.

Comments about Walrus Audio 385 Overdrive Effects Pedal:

I love pedals. I use A Laney Amp, with the 2 Amp simulator pedals. The La Grange, and the, 5F6 Formula.. The Walrus 385, works great with both of these. It also works great alone. It boosts the signal after my, riverside OD, nicely. Breathing new life into my set up. It is just what the Doctor ordered. One of the best pedals I own, 5 Stars rating..

Comments about Walrus Audio 385 Overdrive Effects Pedal:

Ever since this landed a spot on my pedal board, it doesn't get turned off. It just makes everything sound better. It is very sensitive to touch. I find myself using it with the gain at about 2 o'clock, and it clears up my sound while fingerpicking, but get's gritty in the best possible way when I really hit the strings. This pedal sounds so good, I can't recommend this pedal enough. And I mean, come on... this thing just looks amazing. The build quality is top notch. Walrus is such a great company!

Comments about Walrus Audio 385 Overdrive Effects Pedal:

The sound of this pedal I would classify as a medium gain / overdrive. It can be very subtle or provide you with a great distortion sound. It's not "high gain" though. The character of it's sound is pretty classic and "vibey". I love it for classic rock stuff. The two things it does extremely well are: dynamically, it's very responsive to touch and guitar volume level. Really amazing in that respect. The other is: eq. It has a superior active bass and treble control (voice perfectly) that allows it to work with any amp / signal chain setup I've tried. It has found a permanent place on my pedal board for all the above reasons. There are a lot of great overdrive pedals out there these days. Don't overlook this one.

Comments about Walrus Audio 385 Overdrive Effects Pedal:

This pedal is awesome. Great tone. I love having the split bass and treble boost to tweak to my liking. I've turned this in to an "always on" pedal for me. The touch sensitivity allows me to pull back and play clean and then get all the distortion I want when I dig in a little harder. It's exactly what I had hoped for.

Comments about Walrus Audio 385 Overdrive Effects Pedal:

I bought this pedal on the SDOD. I was familiar with some of Walrus Audio's other products, so I already knew how high quality their products are. I figured I'd take a risk on this pedal after watching various demos. I am SO happy that I did.
First off, the construction of the pedal is professional. It could take a beating if you are somebody who is rough on your gear. The graphics on it look great on my board. It is a compact size. The knobs are smooth and easy to use.
The sound on this pedal is what I've been looking for and didn't know it. It is by far the most versatile distortion pedal of this size and function (obviously it doesn't have multiple types of distortions like some pedal). All of the knobs cover a huge range. The more treble and bass you add, the more the pedal growls. My favorite setting is with the volume at 11:00, the drive all the way up, and both the bass and treble at 3:00.
The pedal has some natural compression built in, much like driving a small tube amp would. It is extremely touch sensitive. Even with the distortion all the way up you can pick lightly and it is almost clean. Dig in and it will leave you with a huge grin on your face. It is extremely sensitive to backing off on your guitar's volume... I mean, really sensitive. I've played an OCD for years and thought that it was sensitive, but it has nothing on this pedal. Even with the drive all the way up, you are able to back off enough to get crystal cleans without losing much volume. With the volume all the way up on the guitar, this thing growls.
My advice, jump on this pedal if you have the chance. If I had been playing it in a store then I would've been happy to pay full price on the spot. I thought I was getting just another fun pedal, but what I ended up with is my favorite drive pedal on my board. Thanks Walrus!!!
