More low-end sound, more high-end looks at a mid-range price.

The 5-string Chaos Core 5 Traben bass comes with a Aguilar OBP-3 preamp with 3-band EQ, volume, a 5-way switch, and dual Rockfield humbucker pickups. These electronics capture the warm, soft tones that resonate through the exotic paulownia (a native Chinese tree) wood of the body and its burled or quilt maple tops. The shape of the Chaos Core 5 bass guitar with its glorious lines and sweeping curves is another aspect of its appeal. All in all, the Chaos 5 makes for a lightweight bass that is satisfying, both aesthetically and sonically.

pro off and on bass player since 1965

I have from Beatle bass, fretless, and other 5 strings to now this excellent Traben Black Wash. Since I like to play slap funk, blues, jazz, and hard rock, I play light and fast. So I drop the strings and still no buzz and whooo it's perfect. This bass has great variety of tones with the 5 way switch. It has very high and full output.. Very good buy for this guy. I'm very satisfied.

I almost bought this bass, and the ONLY reason that I didn't buy it is because I played this bass' big brother (Traben Chaos Obsession 5-string neck-thru -- see Traben's website). I liked the pickup configuration on this bass, the controls are easy to figure out and use, and the tone is nice, with unexpected growl in the low end. The neck joint was nice and stiff. You can also string this bass at the bridge or through the body. An added bonus is that this series of Traben bass doesn't have the gimmicky, flashy bridge. Don't get me wrong: big bridge does equal big tone; but give me a break...I ultimately bought the Chaos Obsession neck-thru because it had more sustain and slightly "sweeter" tone (a little brighter). Plus, the soapbars on the Obsession are a little more even sounding than the ones on this bass. The Chaos Core is a great value because you do get a lot of bass for your money! If you're in the market, check these Traben's out. They are no joke!

Thick tone - mix cutter!

The first thing I noticed about this bass is that it sounds a lot better than many basses I own that I spent 2-3 times as much on. I think it's a combination of the Aguilar pre-amp and the super resonant body with the internal bridge extension. The 5-way switch offers very diverse tone options, much more than the Musicman switching in my opinion. That's why I gave it a 5 for value. I couldn't give it a 5 in all categories mainly because it does have a few things more typical of a lower priced bass. I've already repaired a strap peg, a solder joint, and two of the electronics backing plate screws have stripped holes in the first few months of ownership. In spite of that, I really do like this bass, and my band mates all say they think it sounds better than my various "high-end" basses. Tough to argue with that. Comes with strap locks. Tips: This is an 18 volt system...which is something not listed in the specs. 35" scale makes a nice low B, but also requires super long scale strings, which can cost more and not available in all brands. Fortunately D'Addario makes them and my local music store usually has them in stock.

Bang for the Buck!

When I was searching for a 5 string bass, I looked at a lot of different basses and I was originally dead-set on a higher-end model like a music man or a Lakland. After playing a Traben Chaos Core I realized that you don't need to spend big bucks to get a great playing and sounding bass. This bass has all the right components to make it competitive with the higher end basses. The neck is thin and fast, the pickups are tonally versatile and the preamp is incredible, huge boost and cut and at the same time still sounds like the bass not the preamp. I like this base so much I'm looking at a 4 string Core also. What I don't like is that it took bit of time to set it up right. I had to set the action, do some minor fret and nut work, intonate and adjust the bridge height. All of this stuff is not a bit deal for me to do but would cost a bit to have a shop do, less than the difference in price of the other basses I was looking at though. I should also mention that the factory setup was very acceptable, I'm just really picky about my setup. This has all the right stuff and the sound is great and remember I don't play metal.
