I'm using low priced Maxell Music CD-R discs from Wal-Mart and they work just fine. I wonder if the people getting errors are not using audio CDs. No, you can't just use any CD-R. The manual says that. It also recommends that you don't use CDRW, at least not if you want the best results. Anyway, to the machine itself: It's easy to use once you get the hang of it. When I first started, I used pause instead of stop and got lots of short, blank tracks. The next day, I worked on a demo and used only the stop button. I had no problems. Now, all the buttons you need to record are on the machine, and they are easy to understand. I was recording just a few feet from the machine, so using the remote would have been silly. However, you do have to use the remote to add titles to your tracks, if you are going to be that sophisticated.I did about a dozen tracks with no problems. Then I picked the best track and transferred it to another disc. No problems there either. The cords that come with this machine look really cheap, so you may want to buy some real cords from Hosa (if money is tight), ProCo (if you really want quality) or Monster (if you like throwing money away. Who actually pays for Monster cords?) but, you aren't buying this machine for the cords, so that's no big deal. And, the cords with the machine work just fine for most people, except they are really short.I also recorded from another CD player through the analog inputs, and it sounded exactly the same after going from digital to analog and back to digital. That's to my ears; I'm sure with the right equipment you might find some changes made. But, overall this machine is a great deal!

The ideal of a 5 Cd changer and a cd recorder on the same unit is good. However, sometime I will record a whole 1 hour sermon, just so that when I stop recorder, it reads " C10 error" and can't finalize the cd. I can't even play it back on this same deck. When I called the sony company, they said "your cds are corrupted" Save your money & but the Tascam. it cost more but its so worth it. THIS UNIT IS A NO NO!!!

Comments about Sony RCD-W500C CD Recorder:

The unit is very picky about what cd brands it will use. Some have said that the unit functions best with Maxell CDR-Music cds..i would take it one step further and say that the better one to use would be Maxell CDR-Pro Music cds are foolproof if you can find them. They are scarce or non-existent in 2014 though. If you use the standard Maxell CDR music cds..chances are you will encounter c13 toc error messages when you go to finalize the disc at least half the time. The most foolproof method (least likely to have errors with)is the CDR-Pro Music cds..There may be others, but i couldn't find them. The manual is not very specific on what will work and what will not. I would not recommend getting this unit to anyone. I need something else.

This is the best CD recorder; had this for several years; due to age, getting multiple C13 errors; wish I knew where to get it repaired. For that person with the turntable situation, you need to connect turntable to mixer and through the equalizer then use RCA to connect amplifier out put to CD recorder. This is recorder is the BEST; I would buy another one without hesitation.

I have bought 2 of theses units, one for my church and one for myself. I have used the units every sunday for over two years and during conferences. The only flaw I have seen is that it sems to only like the Maxell Music CD to record to. Also you must keep a good signal going to the recorder other wise it will jump tracks like crazy. But keep the signal going and don't allow the time to go over 76 mins and it works like a charm. I have the cds to prove it.

I have had this unit for 3 years and have had no problems. It's so simple to use and have never had an error. I have recorded hundreds of tapes to cd (analog) and never had an error there either. Fantastic quality. Highly recommend this unit. I don't understand how anyone with any common sense can't use this.

i cant believe the person who said this unit is hard to use and he says he is a pro musician? I consider myself a semi-pro and i have the rcd-w10 wich is the same unit fuctionaly, except that the cd player side is a single tray,i never had a problem with any type of blank media or error messages, this unit is very easy to use, there is one press record button, press erase button once for track erase, twice for disk erase, these are just a few examples of how easy this unit is to operate.

It's good if you know how to work with Audio Equipment that's for sure. Wasted a lot of CD's it turns out you must use a MUSIC CD, MAXWELL works out best. You can record on a MUSIC CD then download that to your computer and use a data CD to duplicate on your computer. Keep the manual handy you'll need it to figure this out.

Comments about Sony RCD-W500C CD Recorder:

I wanted a simple to operate cd recorder to put my LP collectin on disc, and I was swayed by other on-line reviews and a salesman. What a mistake! The first one never did work right and the second one is very tempomental. If you want to make a "mix" of recordings on the same disc, this one is not for you. There is no way of knowing if it is actually putting it on the disk until you finalize it and then it's too late. It's not easy to change the settings for "outside" sources, ie a turntable, and whoever wrote the instructions did a bad job of interpreting. Dubbing disc to disc and playback of pre-recorded discs are fine, but I need a way to record for playing elswhere, too. I am now in the market for yet another recorder.

          This product is great !

Comments about Sony RCD-W500C CD Recorder:

I only have this product for 6 months, but I find it to be of great value. The price is extremely perfect. The manuel is a bit difficult to understand, I kept calling Sony several times to just tried to understand the instructions. At the begining I had trouble programing this unit. At first, I was abit doubtful in buying this recorder, but after searching it a bit more, I was completely convince to give a try for it's money. After a while I got the hang of it and now I find it easy to operate, without even reading the manual. In fact, I've been in the DJ busy for 15 years and I've always tried to purchase SONY products in general because of it's great sound and quality. Because of my budget, it's important now to spend a great deal of money on a product without know the true value of it reputation and warranty. Just because you might buy something expensive doesn't mean it's good. My experience has been that some store just want to rip you off from every cent inorder to make a sale. This product might need slight improvement on the remote control, including an OFF switch and larger numbers to better operate, but aside from others say, I like this product and happy with the price. Some consumers might have trouble ot deslike it's function, my advise is try and try again. I'm sure you're get it soon! If there's a problem, it might be a malfunctioned product. I would gladly buy this product again. I hope the price stays the same or less...

So I worked it out and bought the unit and have been using it with out any problems now for six months. I am the Sound and Vidio person at our church and that is were it is used most of the time. I also do some other Sound gigs on my own and I use the unit for both recording and playing sound tracks for the singers.

If you are looking for bells this is not the recorder to buy, but if all you need is a easy to use CD recorder this is the best value for you. If is easy to use for a novice Sound tech. I brought this for a church I installed a PA system into becuase it was very inexpensive. To my plesant surprise two years later it is still working. They use this piece every Sunday and occasional during the week so the unit has clocked a lot of hours. Like I said if you need a simple to use inexpensive cd recorder this is the only way to go.

Comments about Sony RCD-W500C CD Recorder:

I am proud to say that I have been using this unit for several years now with NO problems whatsoever. The main thing to do is use the cds MUSIC cds only - not just any cdr blank cd because it can not record on those. I used this to transfer my band's audio from our live video recordings from our live recorded gigs from the past years down to cd and I could not have done that without this unit. The audio that you put/record to cd using this unit is what you will get on playback so the record level feature on this unit is priceless! I also used a 14 band stereo eq in between my record player and this unit while recording and all I can say is it is unreal! Get one of these!

This unit is great for its uses. I record straight from my digital recorder to disc no problem. Also SBM 24/16 bit conversion is awesome for straight out of the tape out of my mixer. Easy to work if you give the manual a chance. If you have problems with discs not being read then spend more money for better quality blanks. Don't chince..... This unit is Killer for its level.

Comments about Sony RCD-W500C CD Recorder:

This is one of the worst items I have ever seen from Sony. Record an album and most likely before the end of the album you will get a record error. Throw that cd away and start over. You will usually end up wasteing 6-10 c.d's before you get it recorded, not to mention several hours of precious time. Apparently it is an issue. This is the same thing that happened to the first one; the second one was warranty.

This has turned out to be a great addition to my home studio. I've had the rcd 500 for a few years now and it's still going STRONG!! As a DJ?music producer, I need to be able to record with simplicity and ease, which this piece of equipment delivers. Facts to make it work for you: don't record more than 70 minutes, USE ONLY MUSIC/AUDIO CD-R/CD-RW'S, if it jumps to next track while recording, turn off auto track marker under menu option. great for recording live mixes and re-writable feature has saved me TONS of cd's.

Comments about Sony RCD-W500C CD Recorder:

Our church has used this unit for about 1 1/2 years with little problems. One problem we found out about was that if you record to the very end of the CD you cannot duplicate the CD on a non-music CD (on a computer). The last CD recorded did not go to the end and it too would not duplicate. It would be interesting to find out if someone has found a solution to this problem. We have had only a very occasional error show up. We use Maxwell Music CDs.

I had one of these on loan from my church, worked with it about three months. This is one of the most difficult to operate Recorders I have ever worked with. Keep the manual you will need to read it over and over agian even after you think you know what your doing. I used only SONY CD for music discs and about 10% failed to record anything. Got many error messages after long work. Every recording is a multi-step process nothing is easy. I have been working with professional and home Audio products for over 20 years and this machine is the bigest pain in the neck I have ever used. Unfortuatly if your in the real low price market in CD reocorder this is your only choice. Low price does not equal value.

I bought The Sony RCD-500 about 2 years ago because I was looking for a way to make live recordings of our Gospel group on CD's. I've used this unit 2 to 3 church services every weekend for almost the whole time. I normally use CDRW's and have had NO problems with readability. This unit has been thrown in the storage bays of our bus after every singing, and always worked wonderfully when set up at the next singing. It's 2 units in 1, a 5 CD player on the left side and a 1 CD recorder/player on the right. I've used the remote from at least 25 feet with no problems.
