Overview

Jumbo projection with clear maple response and stage-ready detail.

The J-185 Original refresh gives its compact-jumbo balance and maple clarity a more detailed stage voice through Gibson-exclusive Baggs HiFi DNA electronics. The Gibson J-185 Original acoustic-electric guitar uses a Sitka spruce top, flame maple back and sides and traditional hand-scalloped X-bracing to deliver strong projection without the oversized feel of a Super Jumbo. Its 24.75" scale and SlimTaper mahogany neck keep the response quick and the playing feel approachable, while a rosewood fingerboard carries mother-of-pearl split-parallelogram inlays. A rosewood belly-up bridge, bone nut and saddle and Gotoh Keystone tuners keep the familiar J-185 formula intact while the refreshed pickup system extends it naturally into amplified performance.

Baggs HiFi DNA Electronics for Dynamic, Natural Amplified Tone

The J-185 Original features Gibson-exclusive Baggs HiFi DNA electronics designed to translate the guitar's natural character with dynamic realism, warmth and tactile immediacy. Two lightweight, flexible sensors mounted to the internal bridge plate respond sensitively to the soundboard without placing an undersaddle pickup between the saddle and bridge, helping preserve the instrument's inherent acoustic voice. Rather than feeding both sensors through a single preamp input, the system processes its High and Low sensors separately through dedicated, custom-voiced all-discrete Class A preamp circuits before blending them into an optimized output. This split-signal design captures greater dynamic range while maintaining clarity, articulation and strong feedback resistance. Discreet volume and tone controls along the soundhole edge provide convenient adjustment while keeping the guitar's appearance clean and its acoustic character front and center.

Sitka Spruce and Flame Maple Shape a Clear Jumbo Voice

The J-185 Original combines a Sitka spruce top with flame maple back and sides for a clear, projecting response that keeps the jumbo body articulate. Traditional hand-scalloped X-bracing gives the soundboard room to move across broad strumming and more controlled picking, supporting a large-format voice without letting the response become overly diffuse. The jumbo outline supplies acoustic presence and low-end reach, while the maple body helps individual notes remain distinct as arrangements become denser. That balance gives the J-185 enough authority for rhythm work while preserving the clarity needed for songwriting, accompaniment and more detailed playing.

SlimTaper Neck Keeps the 24.75" Scale Approachable

The mahogany neck uses a SlimTaper profile and 24.75" scale, giving the J-185 a more streamlined playing feel than its jumbo outline might suggest. A 1.72" bone nut establishes the string spacing at the headstock, while the 12"-radius rosewood fingerboard carries 20 frets and mother-of-pearl split-parallelogram inlays. The shorter scale keeps fret spacing compact and familiar, complementing the SlimTaper profile as the fretting hand moves through chord changes and melodic passages. Together, those dimensions balance the guitar's larger body with a neck setup that stays approachable across a wide range of acoustic styles.

Rosewood Belly-Up Bridge and Keystone Tuners

A traditional belly-up rosewood bridge and bone saddle anchor the strings at the body, maintaining a straightforward fixed acoustic setup that matches the J-185's classic material recipe. Gotoh Keystone tuners and nickel hardware provide precise, uncomplicated adjustment at the headstock, while the model-specific J-185 pickguard adds a recognizable visual detail to the Sitka spruce top. The combination is intentionally restrained compared with more ornate jumbo designs, allowing the flame maple body and rounded J-185 silhouette to remain the dominant visual elements while the hardware stays practical and familiar.

Traditional J-185 Appointments Complete the Rounded Jumbo Design

Multi-ply top and back binding, split-parallelogram fingerboard inlays and the model-specific J-185 pickguard complete the rounded jumbo presentation without making the guitar overly ornate. Vintage Sunburst sits beneath gloss nitrocellulose lacquer, adding visual depth to the flame maple body while the nickel hardware keeps the overall treatment restrained. A Gibson hardshell case is included for transport and storage. For strummers, songwriters and performers who want jumbo projection with a shorter Gibson scale, the 2026 J-185 Original combines its clear maple response with Baggs HiFi DNA electronics.
