A timeless round-shoulder dreadnought with next-gen Baggs electronics.
Born during the war years and revered for its rich, commanding voice and upscale style, the Southern Jumbo brought a new level of sophistication to Gibson's celebrated round-shoulder dreadnought platform. The Gibson Southern Jumbo Original left-handed acoustic-electric guitar carries that distinctive formula forward with a Sitka spruce top, mahogany back and sides and traditional hand-scalloped X-bracing for a woody, articulate voice with strong projection and focused midrange punch. New Gibson-exclusive Baggs HiFi DNA electronics use dual bridge-plate sensors with dedicated preamp circuits to capture the guitar's natural body, dynamics and detail with exceptional realism when amplified. A 24.75" scale mahogany neck with a SlimTaper profile and rosewood fingerboard provides comfortable, responsive playability, while mother-of-pearl parallelogram inlays, multi-ply binding and nickel open-back tuners give the Southern Jumbo its unmistakably refined character. Complete with a hardshell case, this Original Collection model brings one of Gibson's most prized war-era designs to today's stage and studio.
Baggs HiFi DNA Electronics for Dynamic, Natural Amplified Tone
The Southern Jumbo Original features Baggs HiFi DNA electronics designed to translate the guitar's natural character with dynamic realism, warmth and tactile immediacy. Two lightweight, flexible sensors mounted to the internal bridge plate respond sensitively to the soundboard without placing an undersaddle pickup between the saddle and bridge, helping preserve the instrument's inherent acoustic voice. Rather than feeding both sensors through a single preamp input, the system processes its High and Low sensors separately through dedicated, custom-voiced all-discrete Class A preamp circuits before blending them into an optimized output. This split-signal design captures greater dynamic range while maintaining clarity, articulation and strong feedback resistance. Discreet volume and tone controls along the soundhole edge provide convenient adjustment while keeping the guitar's appearance clean and its acoustic character front and center.
Sitka Spruce and Mahogany for Warm, Focused Round-Shoulder Tone
The Southern Jumbo Original pairs a Sitka spruce top with mahogany back and sides, giving its round-shoulder body a warm, direct voice with the clarity and definition to handle a wide range of playing styles. Sitka spruce provides dynamic range and headroom, responding sensitively to lighter picking while retaining articulation under more assertive strumming. Mahogany adds woody warmth, strong midrange presence and a focused low end, helping chords retain separation and single-note lines speak with a clear attack. Traditional hand-scalloped X-bracing allows the top to resonate freely for added projection, sustain and responsiveness, creating an expressive acoustic foundation equally suited to rhythmic accompaniment, flatpicking and detailed fingerstyle work.
24.75" SlimTaper Mahogany Neck for Relaxed, Responsive Playability
A mahogany neck with Gibson's SlimTaper profile gives the Southern Jumbo Original a streamlined, comfortable feel, while the short 24.75" scale creates slightly lower string tension for easier fretting and a supple response beneath the fingers. The rosewood fingerboard features a 12" radius and 20 standard frets, providing a smooth playing surface for everything from open-position chords to melodic work farther up the neck. A 1.72" bone nut offers familiar acoustic string spacing and a solid contact point at the headstock end, while the compound dovetail neck-to-body joint provides a strong, secure connection between the mahogany neck and round-shoulder body. Mother-of-pearl parallelogram inlays add an elegant Southern Jumbo signature to the fingerboard.
Parallelogram Inlays and Multi-Ply Binding Define Southern Jumbo Style
The Southern Jumbo has long distinguished itself through a more refined interpretation of Gibson's classic round-shoulder aesthetic, and the Original preserves that character with understated period-inspired detail. Mother-of-pearl parallelogram inlays provide an elegant counterpoint to the dark rosewood fingerboard, while multi-ply binding frames both the top and back. A '50s-style tortoiseshell pickguard complements the traditional belly-up rosewood bridge, and nickel open-back tuning machines bring a restrained vintage look to the headstock. A bone saddle and TUSQ bridge pins complete the string path, while gloss nitrocellulose lacquer gives the instrument the familiar look and feel of a traditional Gibson acoustic. A Gibson hardshell case and accessory kit are included.
A Refined Expression of Gibson's Round-Shoulder Tradition
The Southern Jumbo has occupied a distinctive place in Gibson's acoustic lineage since the WWII era, combining the direct, powerful character of a round-shoulder dreadnought with appointments that gave the instrument an identity all its own. The Gibson Southern Jumbo Original left-handed acoustic-electric guitar carries that balance into the present with warm spruce-and-mahogany tone, inviting short-scale playability and the elegant detailing that has long set the model apart. Baggs HiFi DNA electronics extend its expressive voice naturally into amplified settings, adding modern performance capability without distracting from the heritage-driven design. Equally at home supporting a vocal, driving a rhythm part or stepping forward for more detailed acoustic work, the Southern Jumbo Original remains a richly individual take on the classic Gibson round-shoulder guitar.
