Just bought one of these about a week and a half ago. It's my very first Les Paul. I've been playing guitar for nearly 30 years, and for the first time, I understand why people spend money on high end Gibson guitars. My Silverburst required a slight truss rod adjustment out of the box, but other than that... all I can say is "Wow!" The richlite fretboard impressed me so much that I have started looking for other guitars that use it. It just feels like magic under your fingers. Sounds great, looks great, feels great. I believe I even prefer it to ebony for playability. String bends have never been so easy.

My band plays mostly rock/metal. With distortion, the punch from this guitar will knock your socks off. At home I jam a lot of blues tracks, and the rich, warm tones just coat you in smoothness. I actually crave practice time. The action is impeccable, the quality is amazing, the pots are smooth, and all of the hardware is top notch. It's a lot of money to spend, and I was worried about having some buyers remorse, but once I got it in my hands, I haven't had a single regret.

To top off all the great craftsmanship and quality, the finish on this thing is impressive. I have yet to find a picture online that does it justice. Having the silverburst finish on the back just ads to the experience, and the deep, glossy nitrocellulose lacquer finish has so much depth, it almost seems as though you could dip your finger into the finish.

If you have the means, I would highly recommend this guitar. Give the guys at Private Reserve a call. I'd like to say thanks to Derek White for all your help. Derek sent me pictures of the specific guitar I ended up ordering. He also played it for me and was able to offer some feedback on it. The Private Reserve group at Musician's Friend isn't a gimmick. They're great to work with.

Thank you, Gibson, and thank you, Musician's Friend/Private Reserve!

I have been on a search to buy this guitar for over a year and have yet to find one worth buying or worthy of the Gibson Logo. I have seen constant issues with workmanship in binding and finish. I have seen melted binding and and orange peel and fish eyeing on the finish. None of the many guitars I have tried would stay in tune long enough to demo them in the store. I have gone far enough to actually buy new strings and have them installed to try it out, and still had tuning instability. Tone has been marginal in some, and average in others. Huge differences in weight. I have had 3 of these in one store ranging from 9.5 lbs to 12 lbs. I have seen hardware screwed in sideways. Ultimately, Tone is king, and I would most certainly own one by now if I had found the grail, but I have not played one that sounded better than any other import hanging on the wall. I have owned 5 Les Pauls, and still own two (grail) Pauls, as well as many others. I am disturbed that Gibson is trying to pass these poor instruments off as custom shop models with huge pricetags.

Plastic Fingerboard? Really?

Comments about Gibson Custom Limited-Edition Les Paul Custom Electric Guitar:

I mean.. come on. This guitar is FOUR GRAND. Richlite fingerboard. Technically speaking, this guitar is a reissue, and the original guitar had an ebony fingerboard. Plus you can find the original 77-79's in good shape for WAY less. Gibson is not what it used to be.

Comments about Gibson Custom Limited-Edition Les Paul Custom Electric Guitar:

Purchased this custom Silverburst new from a licensed dealer via ebay. A note of caution: when buying an expensive instrument like this via ebay, be VERY cautious. There are Chinese fakes floating around! Contact the seller, ask for serial number, and call Gibson to check the guitar out! They keep good records on Custom Shop guitars, and will be able to tell you all about it.One word describes this guitar: amazing. Tone, oh that wonderful Les Paul tone! My guitar was made in 2010, and it is not chambered. Weight is at least 10 lbs. Some of these are chambered, some aren't, it varies by year. The weight doesn't bother me, because I believe it enhances the sound of the guitar, and of course weight = sustain. After a setup (yes, you will have to set up this pricey thing) the action was low and silky smooth, playing is almost effortless, with NO string buzz. Holds tune very well. The stock pickups in these LP Customs are very good. The 498T bridge pup is hot and articulate with its Alnico V magnets. It's sound is very sharp and defined, with great harmonics, and can be tamed with the tone and volume rolled back. The 490R in the neck position is also quite articulate, but smoothes out beautifully if you back off on the tone knob. Now for quality. The only problem that I have run into is that the toggle switch was a little loose. Very easy fix, if you're not afraid to take a screwdriver to a $4000 instrument. Tip: a small suction cup works great to get the switch & control covers off, as they are fitted very tightly. NEVER PRY!!!! YOU WILL REGRET IT! The binding isn't perfect, but it's close. Melted binding is usually from being on a foam-covered stand or hanger, it will melt the nitro-laquer finish. Finally, the price. Gibson has LOST THEIR MIND! To put a suggested retail price of $5000+ on this guitar is INSANE. But the quality was definitely there on mine. The finish is almost flawless, and has a brilliant, yet slightly opaque shine that only a nitro finish can give. The Silverburst is absolutely stunning, and this guitar is a KNOCKOUT. If you wanna own a primo USA made guitar, there are cheaper ones out there (Jackson SL1 Soloist comes to mind, incredible axe!) but none more beautiful or with more personality than the Les Paul Custom!

Comments about Gibson Custom Limited-Edition Les Paul Custom Electric Guitar:

everything is nice but the original is better
This is a great guitar it sounds and looks great. It is very hard to find a custom les paul without gold hardware and this is a great option. This guitar sounds and plays just like any other custom les paul. Except for the original silverburst which used different paint so the sound and feel is different. the reason they quit making this finish is because the paint affected the tone that is the only downfall of the guitar. Enjoy.

I couldn't be happier

Comments about Gibson Custom Limited-Edition Les Paul Custom Electric Guitar:

This is a great guitar, I love it. The finish is beautiful, and the tone is perfect. It was exactly what I would expect from Gibson. I never owned or even played,a Gibson prior to this one, but now I'm a huge fan. It is a little heavy, but I knew Les Pauls were, so I will just buy a thicker strap. The guitar came on time, and packaged perfect. Musicians Friend contacted me on my preferences of intonation and such, right out of the box played beautiful, no adjustments needed. If I had more money, I would buy another today. I am completely satisfied with my purchase, I couldn't be happier

Comments about Gibson Custom Limited-Edition Les Paul Custom Electric Guitar:

There are no dislikes on this guitar for me. The pickups are perfect. The fit is perfect. The finish is perfect. The richlite neck is great. This guitar screams rock. And mellows out with great cleans. Ive been playing it through a fender twin reverb. Very cool. I also am rockin an axefx through a pa for my metal sounds. Freakin rips..
If you have the cash.. Get it. If you don't.. Find the money.. It's an amazing guitar.
Do not pay any attention to the naysayers over the richlite board. It's great.
I love my new guitar..
Well... I just received my silverburst 2012 les Paul custom. I have been waiting to get this guitar for years and I must admit I was distressed over a let down. Let me tell you what. I have been playing guitar for 30 yrs.. I have owned em all other than the silverburst. Now.. I have never bonded with a guitar as fast as I have with this beauty. And let me tell you it's a beauty. It plays as well as if not better than any other guitar I've owned or own.
Features.. Straight up playability.. That is what you get.. Other than than just two humbuckers. Two volume knobs and two tone knobs.. Simple. It's the playability that makes the features a 10.
The quality is actually better than I expected it to be. Very nice guitar. No blemishes and I went over it with a fine tooth comb. The new richlite neck is actually very nice. Just the same as any ebony neck I've ever played. I have a very nice collection of axes with ebony necks so trust me when I say it. It plays just like ebony. I really have found absolutely no difference in tone either. It came setup perfectly ready to jam. Mine was so new it still smells like lacquer.
The neck is fast and fat.. Very. Very nice guitar. My new number one.
Really high dollar.. But worth it to me.

Comments about Gibson Custom Limited-Edition Les Paul Custom Electric Guitar:

This is my personal favorite finish and it's appropriate that it lands on this particular guitar. I own a 1980 LP Custom Silverbust and a 2009. Few other guitars even come close to this quality of tone and beauty. Pricey? Of course, but you certainly get what you pay for. If money is an issue, don't buy it. But if you want quality, save up. Best purchases yet.

Best Guitar Ever!

By Damien Dredd

from Providence RI

Comments about Gibson Custom Limited-Edition Les Paul Custom Electric Guitar:

The best guitar I have ever used in my entire life. This is a guitar ideal for all genres of music though the two I play personally is metal and the blues. The tone on this guitar is phenominal, first time I ever saw it I was looking through this site about a year ago, I know that's not alot of face time with the guitar but it is more than enough time to see the quality. I hear about the issues with the silverburst finishes on guitars but I have yet to see any. How ever I must add that I customized the guitar recently, I have since added EMG 81/85 Pickups making my uncontested best guitar.

    Stunning looks, excellent tone.

    By Kitharos

    from Tampa, FL

Comments about Gibson Custom Limited-Edition Les Paul Custom Electric Guitar:

I owned an original Silverburst Les Paul Custom, made in 1979. In looks, it immediately stood out from the other Les Pauls in the store. The bridge pickup tone was quite bright, due in small measure to the ebony fingerboard, but more so because of the maple neck Gibson was putting on LP Customs at that time. Zakk Wylde's signature Les Pauls, for example, are made this way. The neck pickup was just beautiful for a rich, full jazz tone. As a result, the Silverburst was much more versatile, I would say, than a LP Standard. It has been many years since I sold the Silverburst; I sometimes regret doing so. More recently, I bought a '68 Custom Authentic in Ebony - another beautiful instrument, yet it does not have the flash and flair of the Silverburst, and its sonic capabilities are different, too. I would recommend the current LP Custom Silverburst to anyone who can afford one. Although it is expensive, as with any high quality guitar, if you hang onto it long enough, it will appreciate in value. They are surprisingly versatile, and the Silverburst finish alone is guaranteed to get you noticed. However, to keep the it looking pristine, don't leave the guitar where direct sunlight will fall on it; over time the silver changes to a greenish or bronze color which may or may not be to your taste. I love the black LP Custom I have now, but I still recall the Silverburst as one of the best guitars I have ever played.

Comments about Gibson Custom Limited-Edition Les Paul Custom Electric Guitar:

I collect Gibson Custom Shop guitars and was very interested in a Silverburst Custom. I was a little nervous about the fretboard change, but upon inspection and playing it appears to be fine.. Looks like Ebony.

The main part of this review I wanted to get across is the level of service I was given by Chris Swope at Private Reserve. I had a very short window of time to take delivery as I was going away for business. When the original shipping was diverted, Chris sprang into action to meet my travel deadline and get me the guitar before leaving, even having it delivered on the weekend by noon. Quite impressive.

yesterday he spent a good part of his day on my behalf and making sure everything worked out, while being in constant contact with me...

I really appreciate the effort he put in. These days it is not too often that you get anyone going the extra mile for you. Chris did for me and I will look to him without hesitation on future purchases..

      Thanks Chris

Comments about Gibson Custom Limited-Edition Les Paul Custom Electric Guitar:

I own one of the original silverbursts. Without a doubt, it is the best playing guitar I have ever touched in my life. I keep my Strat for my daughter to learn to play on. The Strat can not touch the Les Paul, in sound or playability. The only drawback is it is also the heaviest guitar you will play. After I have done a 2 hour show, I am worn out from holding it on a strap.

Comments about Gibson Custom Limited-Edition Les Paul Custom Electric Guitar:

I own a few guitars and had always wanted the Silverburst to add to my collection. When I found out that Gibson had made a limited run in 2007(they made less than 100) I was all over the internet trying to find a reputable dealer who could hook me up. I own several LP's from studios to Customs. This Silverburst by far is the best sounding guitar and the action/feel is amazing! I love the quality of this instrument not that I expected anything less from Gibson. They are a little pricey but worth the investment if you're serious about getting a serious guitar. I'd buy another one if the wife wouldn't kill me for it...

This is the second Les Paul I've bought and it's everything I would expect from Gibson. I also got a call from M/F on the day they were going to ship it asking me how I would like it set up, i.e. action, string preference, etc. When it showed up it was nicely packaged and came with a really nice hard-shell case. When I opened the case it was in there picture-perfect! It plays as good as it looks! Not sorry I bought this....been waiting a long, long time for the silverburst to come back.

Comments about Gibson Custom Limited-Edition Les Paul Custom Electric Guitar:

I have always wanted a Les Paul Custom, but never had the coin to buy one. I currently own, or have owned several Epiphones, a Mexi-Strat and 2 Gibsons: a Standard SG and a Gothic Explorer. Without question, this Silverburst Les Paul Custom is now my favorite. The action as silky-smooth and the tone, even unplugged, is rich and deep. Even the Silverburst finish seems to have "depth". Every time I take it out of the case, it reminds me of a silver Rolls Royce I saw in Vegas last year. Bottom line, as always, You Get What You Pay For. Yes, it's expensive, but true quality has a price tag and these guitars tend to hold their value (or appreciate).

Comments about Gibson Custom Limited-Edition Les Paul Custom Electric Guitar:

Just got the Gibson custom limited edition Les Paul last week and have had a chance to play it. Sounds incredible. It looks great with the chrome hardware and the silver and black coloration. I just wish that they were able to work the flamed maple look into this design. I also like the split mother of pearl block design on the finger board on some of the other LPs, but I guess you can't have everything. I tried out a few of the different LPs in the stores and found out that you have to go with the solid body LPs like this one. The new chambered bodies are a bit lighter but in terms of sound, they don't a robust sound. To me the sound is not a bit monotoned and not as warm as the solib bodied LPs. In terms of value, it is kinda pricey, but the look and the sound from the humbuckers on this baby sold me.
