Overview

A dual-manual organ with authentic tonewheel feel.

From smoky jazz clubs to arena stages, the Hammond XK-7D captures the spirit of the original tonewheel organ and elevates it with modern precision, flexibility and performance control. Purpose-built as a true dual-manual instrument, it combines Hammond’s advanced Virtual Electro-Mechanical (VEM) sound engine, newly engineered 6L multi-contact keyboards, modeled AO-28/AO-29 tube preamp circuitry, enhanced Digital Leslie, expanded transistor combo and pipe organ sections, and deep customization tools into one flagship stage organ. With dedicated Key Click and Leakage controls, 38 harmonic drawbars and full real-time parameter access, the XK-7D delivers the realism, authority and expressive nuance professional players demand for stage, studio, worship and touring environments.

VEM Sound Engine and Deep Tonewheel Customization

At the core of the XK-7D is Hammond’s advanced VEM (Virtual Electro-Mechanical) engine, which recreates the original tone generator chain through detailed physical modeling rather than static sampling. Every nuance — including pitch fluctuation (wow & flutter), tonewheel eccentricity, leakage behavior, impedance reduction and matrix levels — can be individually adjusted, allowing players to replicate specific vintage-era instruments or design entirely new tonal personalities. The addition of the Classic Spinet Model L-112 expands the Custom Tonewheel library even further. Dedicated top-panel controls for Key Click and Leakage provide immediate shaping of those iconic Hammond artifacts, moving effortlessly from pristine clarity to gritty vintage character.

6L Multi-Contact Keyboards for Authentic Hammond Feel

The XK-7D features Hammond’s newly developed 6L keyboard system across both manuals, delivering one of the most authentic modern Hammond playing experiences available. Each key is longer — closely matching original vintage dimensions — and incorporates six physical contacts to reproduce the harmonic engagement sequence that defined classic tonewheel organs. Slowly depressing a key reveals harmonics entering progressively, faithfully recreating traditional articulation techniques such as palm smears, glissandos and percussive phrasing. This tactile realism provides the response depth and expressive control required for jazz, gospel, rock and theatre organ performance.

Modeled Preamp, Enhanced Leslie and Performance Effects

The XK-7D incorporates advanced modeling of the vintage AO-28/AO-29 tube preamp, delivering everything from subtle harmonic warmth to aggressive drive when pushed. A dedicated PREAMP control and clip indicator allow precise gain shaping before the signal reaches the Leslie section. The enhanced Digital Leslie offers nine programmable rotary variations plus a PR-40 stationary tone cabinet model, modeling cabinet reflections and motion with increased realism. Reverb, delay, vibrato/chorus and wah effects are independently controllable from the front panel, enabling expressive tonal sculpting in real time.

Expanded Sound Palette and Bass Integration

Beyond classic tonewheel emulation, the XK-7D includes three transistor combo organ models — Italian “Farf,” British/American “Vx” and Japanese “Ace” — authentically registrable via drawbars. The enhanced pipe organ section features over 40 virtual ranks spanning church and theatre voices, including 32’ pedal tones. A dedicated BASS OUT jack allows pedal voices or user-defined low frequencies to be routed to a separate bass amplifier or subwoofer for reinforced low-end authority. Optional integration with the XPK-250Wmk3 pedalboard, featuring a 3-contact pedal system, further enhances expressive depth and performance realism.

Professional Connectivity and Stage-Ready Authority

With 38 harmonic drawbars, a 320x240 color display, assignable controls, USB storage support, MIDI connectivity and an 11-pin Leslie output, the XK-7D is engineered for demanding professional environments. Balanced audio outputs, rotary and bass outputs, pedal inputs and USB/MIDI integration ensure seamless connection to modern rigs. Designed for tracking, touring, worship and live performance, the Hammond XK-7D delivers the unmistakable character of vintage tonewheels with the flexibility, precision and reliability required on today’s stages.
