OVERVIEW

Four-octave controller with DAW support.

The Impact LX-49 USB MIDI controller delivers performance way above its class. With velocity-sensitive pads, rubberized fader caps and a low-profile design, it feels, looks, performs to professional expectations, and is supported the way your performance deserves. Integration with popular DAWs makes it easy to set up.

KEYBOARD
This 49-note velocity-sensitive keyboard features synth action with medium tension. The piano-style keys are covered to protect against dust while complementing the design. With 4 velocity curves increasing in dynamics, any playing style can be accommodated. Octave and transpose buttons, as well as pitch bend and modulation wheels are within reach, so you can shift the keyboard up or down as needed, or apply articulation with the wheels.

OCTAVE & TRANSPOSE BUTTONS
There is more to the 4 Octave & Transpose buttons than meets the eye. 4 functions are selectable on the fly so you can make important changes at any time, even while you play. A key combination makes assignment quick and easy. Choices include sending out MIDI Program Messages, change the Global MIDI Channel or select any of Impact LX's 5 user presets with either the Octave or Transpose buttons.

PAD ASSIGN
Each pad can be assigned any MIDI note number or MIDI cc message, for use as MIDI trigger or toggle buttons. The Pad Learn feature allows you to just select a pad, play the note or drum sound you want, and assignment is done. Assignments are stored over power cycling so you don't lose your settings when you switch your system off.

DAW CONTROL
Impact LX49 software integration supports most popular DAWs. A common workflow gives access to many of the functions you are most likely to need when recording and performing with your Impact LX. Impact LX DAW integration supports Cubase, Digital Performer, Garageband, Logic, Nuendo, Reaper, Reason, Sonar and Studio One. Relying on your computer screen for constant feedback, important and essential windows related to what you are controlling can be open and closed as needed, right from Impact LX49.

TRANSPORT & NAVIGATION
The 6 dedicated transport buttons are always within reach and mapped to control Cycle, Rewind, Forward, Stop, Play and Record. Press Shift to get access to alternate functions such as Goto L, Set L, Set R, Undo, Click and Mode*. Additional alternate DAW functions include Track up/down and Patch up/down to change your instrument patches are available via the display buttons.

No other entry-level DAW is this easy to use, yet offers unlimited tracks and plug-in instantiations, extensive use of drag-and-drop, and in-depth editing features. Additionally, Bitwig 8-Track is included with the Impact LX USB keyboard.

Great value on a powerful controller.

      Comments about Nektar Impact LX49+:

For the price, this is an exceptional bit of hardware. I upgraded to this from a 12 year old MIDI keyboard, and am pleased with the versatility this product offers. Set up was straight forward out of the box and it interfaced with Personus Studio One Artist with minimal effort, though you will need to download interface software from the Personus website before setting it up. I particularly like the USB interface without fussing with MIDI cables and drivers. An AC adapter might be nice for road musicians, which I am not, so this is a non-issue for me. The keyboard is velocity sensitive and it plays very much like a real piano, and as a result may take some getting used to. The options to select from several keyboard velocity curves was a great help in adapting the keyboard and pads to my less than perfect playing style. The drum pads are very sensitive, and finger drummers should find the pads meet their needs exceptionally well. The control knobs and sliders are smooth and are easy to assign to the various software controls. If you are relatively new to modern controllers, there is a bit of a learning curve to this controller, but this should be expected because of its versatility.

One criticism is that the accompanying manual is very basic and not as helpful as a manual should be. It appears to be written for someone with an expert knowledge of MIDI controllers rather than people with only a moderate understanding.

          Comments about Nektar Impact LX49+:

I'm a guitarist with next-to-zero keyboard experience that bought this controller out of curiosity. I can't really compare this to the competition except to say that features for the price this one stack up well. The DAW integration (in my case Reaper) was also a big selling point for the Nektar products as I really didn't want to mess around with configuration and mapping (which I understand is more common with competing products). The LX49+ has a quality feel to it (keys, knobs, sliders, etc). The display is an old 7-segment LED, which looks a little cheap, but gets the job done and is better than having none at all (as is the case with some other inexpensive controllers).
