A noise gate is a clever device that will silence a track that drops below a set volume threshold. This is especially useful when dealing with sound sources that have a lot of background noise. When that sound source is quiet, the noise may be audible, which adds a layer of unwanted "dirt" to a recording. By using a noise gate you can keep the recorded track clean.
