Overview

Virtual orchestra instrument for Kontakt Player featuring recordings from 41-piece string orchestra and traditional Mongolian ensemble

Built on the same easy-to-use Ensemble Engine developed for Best Service's "The Orchestra" virtual instrument, the downloadable "The Orchestra — Strings of Winter" software is a one-of-a-kind instrument that encapsulates the spirit of rough, untamed and raw winter landscapes. Perfect for filmmakers and game creators who want to match an icy soundtrack with winter scenes, or musicians who want to conjure images of Arctic plains, shimmering glaciers or far-reaching steppes, this instrument is simple to add and play as a library in the free Kontakt Player for Mac and Windows.

NOTE: Users who already own a copy of The Orchestra should obtain Strings of Winter via the affordable upgrade to The Orchestra Complete, which includes Strings of Winter and other new features.

Authentic recordings by two live orchestras

Strings of Winter features 60 unheard and pristine articulations performed by a 41-piece European string orchestra and the wonderful and unique Mongolian State Morin Khuur Ensemble.

The string orchestra was split into 5 sections and performed a number of detailed and extended techniques for this collection, including Trills, Sul Ponticello, Harmonics, Col Legno and Bartók Pizzicato. The resonance and raw complexity of these new articulations was captured in the classic room of Studio 22 in Budapest.

The Mongolian State ensemble plays the Morin Khuur, or "horse head fiddle," the national instrument of Mongolia. This traditional instrument has two strings made of horse hair and is played with a bow also strung with horse hair, giving it a delicate and airy timbre. The Morin Khuur Ensemble was recorded at White Arch Studios in Ulan Bator with an orchestra of 15 players split into high and low ensemble.

Built on a solid foundation

Strings of Winter features the same powerful Ensemble Engine as critically acclaimed Best Service instrument "The Orchestra" and is made in collaboration with Dynamedion, a renowned European sound design company that focuses on video games. This engine works through a number of independent arpeggiators and velocity envelopes, heavily inspired by the Sonuscore Origins Series. Users can create pulsating rhythms and even inspiring full arrangements from any combination of notes, all without relying on prerecorded phrases — Strings of Winter gives you full control. It will work, no matter the chord or note. With minimum loading times, a vast amount of presets provides full ensemble colors right out of the box. Load up to 5 different instruments in independent slots and play them together, and access all individual controls for each of the five instrument modules from the engine screen.

Arpeggiator and velocity envelope

The arpeggiator creates fascinating melodic patterns to give any project a rich and lively orchestral feeling. Change the pattern of the arpeggiator with the rhythm stepper, and modify almost every parameter to stay in full control of orchestral color. And for even more fine-tuning freedom, the Velocity Envelope can add a recurring dynamic movement to a sustaining note. The centerpiece is the envelope shape, which can be drawn freely.

Export a custom performance

With Strings of Winter, Best Service is also offering a highly requested new feature: MIDI export. Users can drag and drop the arrangement of their performance to any favorite DAW, enabling them to change notes and rhythms afterwards for every exported clip. This makes it a breeze to create variations and emotional changes, without overwriting the arpeggiators and envelopes. Those MIDI files can also be used with different instruments — even from other sample libraries.

Play freely with individual, multi-track and ensemble instruments

Play ideas and melodies freely with individual instrument patches and articulations, or use multi-tracks to take the Ensemble Engine even further toward instant playability and sound as they load and layer multiple instances of TO - Strings Of Winter. Aside from the Ensemble Instrument, Strings Of Winter also contains 64 single instruments from the separate sections, and as a bonus, full ensemble risers, crescendos, falls and hits.
