This little son of a gun has made me a better guitarist, song writer and musician just by having fun with it. The amount of features is mind boggling, awesome sounding effects (great for bass aswell) and the drum kits throw in so many cool treats for metal, rock, hair metal, dance/rap/rnb, jazz and even some bob marley grooves. there is only one problem that I have found with the whole unit and that is the mic preamp is a tad quiet, great for a vocal mics but for a mic such as sm57 or d112 it doesnt supply enough volume. At the end of the day if your looking at making yourself an all around better musician and love experimenting with the tunes you've come up with then this is for you!

I have had this unit for going on two years. This is my first experience with a digital recorder, so the learning curve for me is steep. The instruction manual for this unit is the size of a trade paperback, if that gives you any indication of how much stuff is packed in here. The depth of choices you have is truly mindbending. They certainy haven't skimped on the options. The drum kits (there are several) all sound good. If, like me, learning to program them is something you don't have time for, pre-programmed songs in a good spectrum of genres is available. For those willing to invest the time, the choices are certainly there. The con side is that the case of the unit is plastic and the buttons have a very fragile feel to them. The biggest problem with the BR-600 is that you do not have a single XLR mic input--it's all 1/4 jacks. That may be a problem for some, I myself am somewhat annoyed by it, especially since comparably priced units include them. As to the COSM effects, some sound really good. Some are completely useless and awful. There are so many that no two users will agree but the upshot of this is you will probably find yourself needing a preamp and some dedicated effects as you use this. It would actually be easier just to use a seperate pedal and get the setting as you want them than it is to try and manipulate the pre-set COSM channels. This is not set up like a multi-effects pedal, I would love it if it were. The condenser mics onboard are surprisingly powerful and live recordings sound very good. All in all, a lot of bang for the buck but be warned: it runs into a LOT of work figuring it out. If you are an acoustic singer/songwriter type, this would be like buying a sports car to drive to the grocery store.

Comments about Boss BR-600 Digital Recorder:

I've owned the Br-600 for @ 4 years and it is one of the smartest musical purchases I've ever made. For the price, the features and sound quality are fantastic. It has taken my guitar playing and song writing to a whole new level. After a reasonably short learning curve, you will have at your disposal: Built in drums/percussion, a wide variety of guitar, vocal, and mixing effects, and bass and acoustic guitar simulators. It even has a surprisingly good built in microphone. To get the most out of this product, however, you will need to purchase a 1gb memory card and a power adapter. The card it comes w/ is worthless. The owners manual tells you which cards are compatible. I had no problem finding them online or at a local music store that sells this product. Overall: An A+ for the hobbyist who enjoys seeing their originals come to life!

Comments about Boss BR-600 Digital Recorder:

My store is a Boss(Roland) dealer and the price you can get it for here is the best deal you will get.The unit is Awesome!!!While everyone and their brother uses the computer to record nowadays...this is for musicians that know how to play and want simplicity.I recorded a song called Waiting 4 Mondays on You Tube - with only a simple chorus on Rhythm and Overdrive on lead. It was all done with no editing and on the spot, so you can hear the natural sound of the BR-600.There are so many great features, just give yourself a little time to learn how to use this specific unit. The drums can do almost anything you want, and you can edit each pattern. When recording on any unit, you cannot use even a mediocre amount of distortion or you sound is fake and muddy. Learn to use a small amount of distortion and double track your parts.Bottom Line: Highly recommended by a professional musician.

Everything but kitchen sink

Comments about Boss BR-600 Digital Recorder:

I've used this for about 2 years now. Used it for multitracking, drum programming, and even recording live. Does it all. There are very usable natural drum sounds built in, and you can program your own beats and fills. I use a modeler in thru the line in because I like my tones on it better than the Boss's but can tweak the Boss tones to get something useable if in a pinch. Get a 1GB card for sure. And back up your work. I have lost a couple complex arrangements due to "card error", but for most part, this is as good as it gets for portable multitracking with drums, and it does great at live recording, too.

Ask me a question

Comments about Boss BR-600 Digital Recorder:

See above
I bought a BR-600 in summer of '09. Unfortunately, I was so busy with my band, shows, rehearsals that I didn't have time to use it BEFORE the warranty expired. Fast Forward to winter '10/'11: After two songs I started having trouble with it. After recording my third song, I took a listen. RIGHT AFTER LISTENING, STOPPED THE SONG AND SHUT IT DOWN. WHEN I WENT TO POWER BACK UP, MY SONG WAS GONE, AND IN ITS PLACE WAS A "CARD READ ERROR MESSAGE"!!! Since I didn't have time to get it to my laptop, the song was lost. After calling, emailing support, and finally emailing people at the corporate level, I was told with some vague advice that it was the card. I bought a new one per Boss's recommendations (1GB max, under 45X), tried to initialize it, and ended up with an "unsupported card" message. I finally got a call from Tony in support, who in my opinion, is the only person at Boss that I have dealt with that seemed to care about the problems I was having. He got me set up on the update which cured the card problem. Problems over? Not even close. After RE-PROGRAMMING MY BEATS, RECORDING THE INTRO AND STARTING MY RHYTHM GUITAR TRACKS THE UNIT DISPLAY FLASHED THREE TIMES, GAVE ME A LOW BATTERY MESSAGE (NEVER MIND THAT I USE A PSA ADAPTER), AND SHUT OFF, NEVER TO POWER UP AGAIN!!! I have verified on other Boss products I have that use the same adapter that the PSA is indeed good! I contacted Boss four days ago and have YET to get a reply as to how they feel about making such an unreliable product. It would be a different story if I hadn't taken care of it, but the unit stayed in the case when not in use, was NEVER left plugged in/powered up when not in use, and stayed on my recoding desk, untouched by anyone but myself.

If you value your time, energy, and the work it takes to make a good recording, don't buy this unit unless you plan on being very frustrated by an unreliable machine, and enjoy the attitude of apathy that Boss has taken over a lackluster product. No service after the sale!
It is a good idea in theory to have so many features on one multitrack, but when you lose songs, and the unit quits working after three songs, there is obviously a lack of quality control at Roland/Boss!
See above two statements unless you like the sound of a broken record!

Comments about Boss BR-600 Digital Recorder:

First off: there is a bios upgrade that allows the use of more brands of 1GB flash cards. I've had a lot of fun recording with this. The controls are pretty intuitive once you play around with it for a while. The menus and buttons are all logially set up. The guitar effects are okay, not stellar but usable. The loop effects are better. My biggest gripe is the mic preamp is really noisy. Get a seperate mic preamp. All in all I am pretty happy with it for the money.

Finally found a CF chip that works

By HarVette

from Kennewick, WA

Comments about Boss BR-600 Digital Recorder:

There is a pretty good learning curve with this machine, but that is simply because it offers so much at such a reasonable price. Only one problem, and it is a biggie. One and only one Compact Flash card works, and that is the 1Gb CF by SanDisk. I wasted a lot of money and time. My fault fully. I should have called Boss right off the bat, but I got a CF that was "guaranteed" to work with all Roland products. Otherwise, I love my BR600. Records well in many environments.

Comments about Boss BR-600 Digital Recorder:

If you're on your way to producing albums, this recorder is the way to go. I am a solo artist and I produce albums for independent bands. I have access to a top of the line studio but the BR-600 has been my tool of choice for recording. I can record whenever I want at my house! The ONLY DOWNSIDE: you must use batteries unless you buy the power cord. Other than that, this unit is great. Buy this recorder and start getting your music out to fans!

Comments about Boss BR-600 Digital Recorder:

yo, i use this primarily for capturing the initial recording, as well as doing a quick mix. i generally use a good 15-20 tracks per song, and so do a lot of bouncing in the midst of recording. the v-tracks are an awesome feature, and are a huge advantage when compared to other digital recorders in the same price range. i generally do track by track recording before bouncing tracks onto the computer where i do the real editing, but i do use this to record jams as well, in combination with my behringer mixer. getting a decent mixer to accesorize this recorder is a must if you're going to be doing solid acoustic recordings. in any case, i'm all over the place in terms of what i record, and this has accompanied me through the past several years. i'm now in the 400s in songs started, and hope to do another 400! great product!peace!

BR600: The ultamate toolbox for your recordings.

By WWW1

from Somewhere

See all my reviews

Comments about Boss BR-600 Digital Recorder:

I've researched the BR600 for a while and I just purchased a new BR600 earlier this March. There are so many reasons why this recorder stands out even among other Boss recorders: you can record a snare, kick,, crash, etc off a real drum kit or create your own sounds. (it's like a rudimentary sampler) and assign them to your BR600 then play them with the drumpads instead of drumsticks! I like to hum sounds and play them on the pads. The cons: The maximum memory capacity is 1 GB on a compact flash card so stock up on these. For some, this maybe a nuisance, but I like to relate this to buying blank tapes or cds or HiMDs.I also downloaded the firmware update to 1.11 on the Boss' website. This firmware update will help your recorder accept other CF brands previously not accepted, but the Boss recorder will not accept a card with more than 1GB even after the download.I'm also a drummer-hobbyist, so I recorded some drums and used the onboard mics and determined how the drums sounded. My impression? The quality was very close to my shure drum mics, so IMO, it's great for live gig/ field recordings.

Amazing little device. Enormous value.

By Series10Goon

Comments about Boss BR-600 Digital Recorder:

I was in the market for an 8 track digital recorder to record my new but rapidly developing rock band. I was also looking for a drum machine to help me compose songs when working on solo projects. When I found this, I was pretty excited, but also nervous, as dedicated machines tend to be better and less complicated.Having had this machine a few weeks now, I can honestly say I'm thrilled. It does everything it advertises and the results are better than I anticipated. I've read reviews and it seems half of them say the manual is useless and the other half say it's a piece of cake. I have to say I come down in the middle. The manual is very helpful, but leaves out some details that are necessary to doing things that I wanted to do. Overall, while the setup is necessarily complex (many features in a small device) they are generally very intuitive and once you're used to it, you can do it pretty efficiently. It does require some patience, some experimentation, and some re-reading of the manual, but it's not that bad as some make it out to seem. For the record, my only real recording experience was with an old Fostex x-12 4 track cassette recorder. I'm pretty good with computers and digital menus don't bother me too much. If you spend time with this product, it will perform well for you. Drum sounds are very good and versatile. I really love it.

BOSS BR-600 is Tops !

Comments about Boss BR-600 Digital Recorder:

If you?re looking to Muti-Track ? The BOSS BR-600 is for You !The BOSS BR-600 is all it?s crack up to be? Great electronics, Great sound, so much effects, bells and whistles for so little money! The Guitar effects gives you all the playing power a musician needs to get that song done, from soft style to heavy metal you?ll have it all at your fingertips ! Voice effects is stunning, I don?t have a great singing voice plus my range is small, so with the voice effects features gives me the flexibility I need to get my musical point across !! Plus the onboard mics catch every sound so, if you?re plugging in your elec/acoustic guitar for one track and singing on another using the onboard mics, have no fear, it will pick up even the softest voice with great clarity !! You probably can do some EVP work if you really want to, the onboard mics are that sensitive !The only problem I see, it comes with such a small memory card (128mb) and no AC adapter?. I picked up the AC adapter (PSA-120S) at best buy for $20.00 that wasn?t too bad. I found a company (memorysuppliers.com) that carries the 1GB Compact Flash card. The one I got is made by SanDisk, Product no: SDCFB-1024-A10 ... Cost was $23.00 with free shipping ? The BOSS BR-600 recognized the new memory card immediately so I didn?t have to do any fancy programming? My total playing time on the 1GB card is 515.38 minutes!IMPORTANT? This is a must: Don?t lose your owner?s manual?.. You?ll find out later that it?s easier to fly a Starship than to work the BR-600 by memory ! Enjoy?. Worth every penny !!

My First Day With The BR-600

By Joe-Txedt

from San Diego, CA

Comments about Boss BR-600 Digital Recorder:

Ok, I am a real pain in the neck to music store salesmen. I return a lot of stuff because I am very picky. I used to work in a music store, so I expect to get maximum value for my dollar. This time I was pleasantly surprised. The Boss BR-600 is everything the marketing says it is. If you are looking for a really solid song writing tool, this is the unit for you. There is nothing else in its price point that comes close. Right out of the box, within 10 minutes, I am using the onboard mics to record acoustic guitar and vocals. These are not boom box mics, they are good enough to use in your recordings. I layered some more tracks, slapped out a rhythm to my tracks on the back of my guitar and voila! I have a nice little acoustic recording that would be good enough to master and use to get gigs. I did a little more work getting into the effects. It is going to take me more than one night to get through the rest of the functions, but I am ok with that. This thing is going to be a lot of fun once I am proficient with it.

Comments about Boss BR-600 Digital Recorder:

I wasn't going to place a review until like several months after owning it, but i already know how to use this thing after two days of ownership. This thing is ridiculous if you are thinking of buying it, buy it, built in drum machine, all kinds of guitar, vocal, and bass effects. If you're going to buy a recorder, either get this, or step it up to computers and software. I didn't think the sound quality would be that great, but was completely wrong. I've already recorded tracks and put them on myspace, After one day! Pitch correction! people talk about the menus being a hassle to scroll through, but it really couldn't be much easier, unless you had a computer screen i suppose. it has pretty much an endless amount of tracks to record to, since you can just bounce all the tracks to one track to free up the rest.
