Overview

Six-mode analog PWM compression with versatile dynamics shaping and creative harmonic control.

One compressor can behave like an entire rack of dynamics processors when its architecture is designed to change more than a few basic settings. The Cranborne Audio Brick Lane 500 Modal PWM compressor is a fully analog 500 Series processor built around six distinct compression modes—Velvet, Float, Smash, Tame, Glue and Polish—each with its own ratio, knee, attack and release behavior. Its custom Pulse Width Modulation circuit delivers exceptionally low distortion while allowing compression envelopes to range from slow, vintage-inspired movement to aggressive transient shaping and mastering-style limiting. Variable input and output gain, selectable sidechain filtering and the mode-dependent Stress control extend that flexibility further, turning the Brick Lane 500 into a dynamics and tone-shaping tool for tracking, mixing, bus processing and mastering.

Six Modes Reshape the Compressor's Entire Response

Rather than applying one compression topology to every source, the six Modal settings fundamentally alter how the processor responds. Velvet delivers smooth Vari-Mu-inspired movement with tube-like harmonic character, while Float provides gentler Opto-style dynamics. Smash shifts toward aggressive FET-style punch, Tame focuses on fast and transparent transient control, and Glue provides restrained bus compression for binding mix elements together. Polish completes the range with fast mastering-style limiting, giving engineers distinctly different starting points without swapping hardware. Variable-range Attack and Release controls change behavior with each mode, while selectable 60Hz, 100Hz and 200Hz sidechain high-pass filters help keep low frequencies from driving compression unnecessarily.

Stress Turns Dynamic Control Into Harmonic Shaping

The Stress control changes character according to the selected mode, introducing harmonic saturation that complements each compression style rather than applying the same coloration across every setting. It can add vintage-inspired warmth in Velvet, intensify aggressive transient treatment in Smash, contribute density in Glue or help finalize loudness and clipping behavior in Polish. Because the coloration is generated within the fully analog signal path, the processor can move from relatively transparent dynamics management to intentionally saturated effects without digital conversion. ±20dB input and output controls provide further control over how hard the circuit is driven and how the resulting level is balanced.

Analog Lookahead and OptoSync Expand Professional Workflows

Polish mode introduces Cranborne Audio's Analog Lookahead technology, using predictive voltage detection to anticipate fast transients for precision limiting without conventional digital lookahead processing. For stereo applications, OptoSync allows two adjacent modules to synchronize controls using optical communication, with one unit acting as the master and the other following its settings without additional internal cabling. A 1/8" TRS connection also supports linking non-adjacent modules, while automatic circuit calibration helps maintain accurate matching between processors. Twelve-segment level and gain-reduction meters, stepped front-panel controls and true bypass round out the Cranborne Audio Brick Lane 500 as a flexible analog compressor designed to move quickly between precision dynamics control and creative sonic transformation.
