When someone asked me the other day about how my ONYX 1640 "sounds", I was a little stumped because this is my first and only mixer. My best answer was, "I've never been able to get it distort" -- and then I thought about how incredible it is that I can say that after hundreds of hours of use, I've never had the mixer add even a hint of distortion to ANYTHING that I've put through it.The first time I used this mixer, I was still a little timid about touching an EQ knob. That changed quickly ? it?s very musical, and has made EQing vocals & instruments a pleasure.Lastly, for those worried about the firewire/DB-25 direct outs being pre-EQ, pre-fader, have no fear. A company called Front End Audio has been approved by Mackie to make the post-fader modification to the ONYX 1640. I don?t have this mod, but I still could record 8 channels post-fader if needed with a little creativity (6 post-fader AUX sends & 2 Sub mixes from channels 1-8 patched into channels 9-16). This also allows me to record any outboard gear through the inserts.

Mackie Onyx 1640... Mackie's equipment is manufactured, built and supported by Loud Technologies. I purchased the board over a year ago for mobile recording and the power supply assemble failed in January. This unit is built with sub assemblies so changing parts is very easy. My issue with Loud is I ordered a new P/S sub assembly in Feburary and to this day it has been on back order. DO NOT purchase this or any Mackie equipment to use in an enviroment where down time will cost you money. Called on the status of the order today and was told it wont be until September now. Over the course of the past 2 months, I have unloaded all my Mackie gear for other brand equipment.

Comments about Mackie Onyx 1640 16-Channel Mixer:

This is an amazing board. Amazingly Stupid! Highly advertised "Perkins E.O.'S" , (and all the knobs) become useless when using the firewire card. I talked to Mackie and they tell me the mixer can be used for a live mixing board. This thing wouldn't last 30 days on the road. The product info doesn't tell you this. So, if you want to spend $1279.00 for the pre-amps go ahead. I would return it, but I have installed the firewire card. Mackie should be ashamed!!!

Comments about Mackie Onyx 1640 16-Channel Mixer:

What can I say about the best firewire recording unit I have ever owned. This unit, as long as you have a fast workhorse computer, does a great job in my studio and Live! I have a Mac Pro with 4GB of ram and I'm recording 16 channels at a time without a glitch...EVER! Knock on wood. I have recorded over 30 live shows with it and have spent endless hours in the studio as well. This board is great and you can make the EQ's send to the recording if you choose to spend a few hundred extra to a company that does it. I recommend the onyx series to any musician no matter what your abilities are. I'm think the 24 channel may be my next purchase once I build my new studio. Keep it up Mackie.

Pretty Amazing Advance from Mackie Forefathers

Comments about Mackie Onyx 1640 16-Channel Mixer:

This board is amazing at first glance! It is impressive even to a youngster like me. I grew up with Mackie and I know the "quality" they have. Put simply, This board rocks! I know that the EQ is bypassed through the FireWire card but that is ideal for anyone using the FireWire to their advantage. This board is perfect for live rock your face off shows and the sterile digital recording studios! An amazing first! Congrats Grampa Mackie!

Worthwile With firewire

By Alex-pSHBr

from Buffalo, NY

Comments about Mackie Onyx 1640 16-Channel Mixer:

I dont know how other mixers work, but the fact that the mixer doesn't touch ANYTHING after the gain on the firewire is a godsend. I record into Adobe Audition, and use the mixing to provide monitors and mix-minus (cleanfeed) to skype callers. Its wonderful to be able to record the flat, unaltered sound, and still have the capability to mix for monitors and bleed speakers. Its use case is not of a digital mixer. If you want your faders to effect the digital recording, your looking at adding a zero to the price (though that is changing). If you really want to record the flat sound so you can mix for live and still have a great recorded sound, this is the setup for you.(Note..this mixer doesn't COME with the firewire card, at least it didn't when we got it.)

So... you want to record your band...

Comments about Mackie Onyx 1640 16-Channel Mixer:

I have over 20 years worth of playing/sound tech/sound mixing experience... I don't claim to be a pro, but I know what I know. I got this board with the firewire and BINGO..! I can record entire shows of both bands, and mixdown whatever I want later. Understand that you will need to have a good computer to record onto, I use my laptop. Also, you will need to have a good recording/mixing/mastering software program and the know how to use it. If you have these things, you can mic up any band and if they have a good show, you are gonna have a great cd..! I have NEVER gotten such AWESOME SOUNDING mixes of our gigs. I wish they would let me post an mp3 so you could hear what I'm talking about. Anyway, if you are serious about live digital recording this is a good tool to have.

Hugely misleading!

By MadatMackie

from Norton, Ohio

Comments about Mackie Onyx 1640 16-Channel Mixer:

O.K. the Onyx if a really quality mixer. But DO NOT buy this mixer for your studio.Neither the eq's, nor the channel inserts can be used via the direct outs (or firewire). Mackie should be ashamed of themselves for selling a mixer on the new studio quality eq's when they can only be used live. Do they think that more people are recording live than to DAWS. There's a home recording revelution going on. With a simple pre/post switch they could have had the best of both worlds. What were they thinking!

Comments about Mackie Onyx 1640 16-Channel Mixer:

I've had the 1640 for about 3 years and use it live and in the studio. If you record to something like Protools it is a "must have" for monitoring at zero latency. I use the 1640's 6 Aux outs for 6 independent headphone mixes. I then come out of one DB-25 out to an M-Audio octane for CH 1-8 and from the other DB-25 out to my 003 Rack for Ch 9-16. Works and sounds like a million bucks. As to the negative reviews about the EQ and faders not effecting the mix to record,it is not something that most engineers do anyway. If you have good mics and take the time when you record you can always (provided your DAW will allow) add or subtract a little EQ later. This is without a doubt the biggest bang for the buck mixer out there IMHO. I would by it again 3 times if I had to.

Comments about Mackie Onyx 1640 16-Channel Mixer:

I have had this mixer for about 6 months. I use it for recording and live shows. I don't worry about EQ until I mix so this is set up just right. I have recorded live shows and this mixer lets me do the live mix with no compromise on the recording direct outs. We should all learn more about microphone placement, if they are fairly good mics you will get the recording you need and have more flexibility to EQ at mix down. For the cost of this mixer its clean yet warm sound makes it a no brainer. Great improvement over typical live sound and recording mixers costing thousands more. Just use it right and it will be a great friend.

Comments about Mackie Onyx 1640 16-Channel Mixer:

This mixer rocks. I recently upgraded from my 1604vlz and the difference is amazing. The new pre amps sound great and have a ton of headroom. I love the metering on each channel and have 6 fully switchable auxes. That is one thing I really like is having 6 real aux sends. I would always run out of auxes or not have enough mon mixes with the other board. This is great having 6 switchable auxes. The EQ is also nice on the board. I enjoy having 2 mid sweeps. You can really help shape a mix, or clean up a mix. The firewire option is nice as well. Having everything pre is good for live recordings. I like being able to go in and edit everything after words, while not having to deal with EQ from the concert. It also makes a great studio board. And this is coming from a Midas user... I highly recommend this board.

Comments about Mackie Onyx 1640 16-Channel Mixer:

Ok Folks, This Product is probably the best I've ever seen from Mackie! Now All They Need is a True Vca Console. 4 Band Parametric EQ!! Yes if you're one of those people like me, the only thing holding me back from ever using a Mackie were a few things. 1. Vca's? 2. 4 aux Pre and 2 Post fader. 3. And a 80hz Low Cut. I've Done almost everything, From the Coffee House-FOH to Monitors on a PM4000. This is the best set up mixer I've seen out of these guys!

Preamps to be legendary

Comments about Mackie Onyx 1640 16-Channel Mixer:

I finally pulled the trigger and upgraded from my trusty 1604. After reading all the reviews I could get my hands on, I decided the new Mackie flagship Onyx 1640 would be just what I needed-after all, I couldn't lose any preamps/XLR inputs. I couldn't believe the size of the box, this thing is large. It will fit between a standard 19" rack, if you can find one 14 rack spaces tall. It weighs about 30 lbs, which is also heavier than my old 1604. I guess they had to make some compromises, however, to fit so much sweet sound into a portable unit. The preamps have incredible dynamic range, and are stunningly quiet. I mainly use the board for live shows, and I have stopped using my external compressors on individual channels, since the preamps will handle such a range, I'm left with much cleaner sound. The Eq's take some time to tweak, but who wants less sound shaping ability?-not me. All in all, I think the pros greatly outweigh the cons with this mixer, and I am happy to have a mixer with such capabilities.

Great for SOME studios.

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

Comments about Mackie Onyx 1640 16-Channel Mixer:

You may hear a lot of complaints about the signal being tapped for firewire before the EQ or inserts. I am a bit disappointed by that design flaw, but think about this: You would have to spend as much if not more for an interface with 16 preamps this quiet and you wouldn't have a great live mixer. If you need a great board for a small venue, than this mixer is for you. If you record live shows and don't want the recording tainted by live EQ, than this mixer is for you. If you wait for mixdown to use FX, EQ etc (as well you should) AND you use plug-ins, than this mixer is for you. If you record using traditional outboard FX, EQ, compression, etc, than this mixer is NOT for you.

Comments about Mackie Onyx 1640 16-Channel Mixer:

I just got this mixer and it is totally sweet. I use it for recording exclusivelly and am glad the firewire is sent post eq. It lets me do my own stuff in sonar 4 with a dry sound. Being able to send a good mix to the monitors and do all my work after the musicians have left is a great feature... I think though if they gave me the option it would be better.

Comments about Mackie Onyx 1640 16-Channel Mixer:

People in the industry throw around names but few do evaluations. I have had experience in television and sound reinforcement for over 30 years, and I was looking for a more esoteric British sound consoles but the budget and requirement of recording church services did not require a $10,000 digital console. Wow was I amazed! Even my rookie sound tech who I turned the controls over the first recording could hear the difference, and so did church members who noticed the quality on tape. I mean before we were pleased with the performance of the Behringer mixer we had but when we needed more channels, and a more serious mixer I could not believe I got the quality in sound and construction for under $1300 this mixer. If I had to change any feature it would be having the eq section reversed with the aux mix.

Great mixer!!! but.......

By Tim-MtLPt

from Orem, UT

Comments about Mackie Onyx 1640 16-Channel Mixer:

If you want this mixer, than base your decision on what you need for live use only. This mixer sounds awesome for live use. The mic pre's are the best mackie has yet. But when using for recording, you don't get any of the "perkins EQ" because they tapped the signal after the gain, but before the EQ. Why.... I don't know. Incredibly stupid... But the board is super quiet and sounds great. I guess it would be fine to do live recordings and then EQ when you get home on your laptop.

Comments about Mackie Onyx 1640 16-Channel Mixer:

Ok folks, this is a real great contender for super mixing capabilities. I have had plenty of Mackies from the 4 buss to the studio stuff, and get ready for some serious EQ! Ya want sizzle and highs? It's there. Contour your bass just right? It's there. The 6 aux sends are a real blessing, (like 2 for effects and 4 monitor mixes, and the Perkins EQ has simply got to be heard to be appreciated (Think Pink Floyd here) my only complaint is that this thing is big. It hangs out my rack by 5 inches, so I have to modify the rack (Genz Benz) but I am happy do do it. The sound is better than all previous models, and the layout is terrific. Haven't used it for recording yet, but the live sound is actually better than I expected. Did you like the VLZ stuff? Well, it's apples and oranges compared to the Perkins EQ. Kinda spendy, but you get what you pay for on this one. Good job Mackie!
