These headphones were inexpensive (& not reviewed anywhere), so I didn't expect much..."just another pair of DJ-style closed-back headphones." I was wrong! After ~75 hrs of burn-in, they sound quite good. Unlike many "U-shaped" closed headphones with hyped bass, treble, and receding midrange, these headphones have excellent impact and clarity throughout the frequency range. The midrange is their strong suit: very clear, non-fatiguing, and listenable. The bass is very capable, deep and impactful when present on a recording, and the treble is detailed but not bright. These headphones are a winner!

You know that saying about Bose? "No highs, no lows must be Bose". Well these are the exact opposite. "No mids must be Marantz". Ok, I don't think that will catch on.
Anyways, these are super comfortable headphones with nice big pads that fit easily over my ears. Just the right amount of pressure too. Lots of plastic but nothing seems too cheap. Removable chord is really nice.
Soundwise, I can see why people would like these. I wouldn't mind them at all for casual listening. But they are very bassy and the highs are tipped up. This combo lends some excitement and openness that I usually don't associate with closed back headphones, but gets tiresome over long sessions. Real cymbals come out harsh and artificial sounding. The hyped up bass masks out lower mid textures. But worse of all, mixing with these results in dull, mid heavy mixes on other more balanced systems.
These often go on sale for about 40 and at that price these are a good value for casual use headphones. At full price, they are ok. Just don't use them to mix.

Hands down - these ARE the best cans for under a hundred. Frequency response is phenomenal - 10Hz low end - you only find that rating on high end cans from Bose, Beyerdynamic, etc. Crisp mids and highs - and defined (not muddled in the least) bass.

Comments about Marantz MPH-2 Professional Studio Headphones:
As far as I know, these just came out and I happened to get them on sale before the price went up. These are super comfortable headphones! I use these for private listening of CDs, LPs and other formats played through vintage Sherwood and Harmon Kardon stereos, and they sound fantastic. They're just a bit bassy for my taste, but not in an annoying sense, but hey, that's what EQ is for, right? They sound okay with my iPhone and Fiio X1 high resolution portable player, but the EQ *really* needs to be tweaked on both devices to get a decent sound.
There are two issues I have with these headphones... First, I might try some DIY cloth earpads to help tweak the sound; the leather pads are nice, but I can imagine the sound would open up just a bit more with cloth pads. Second, the cable is TEN FEET LONG and feels a bit cheap to me. The cable is detachable (bayonet style) and is plastic where it locks into the left ear cup; I'm afraid either the cable end or the cup could eventually wear out with repeated removal of the cable and would have liked if it was threaded metal similar to the 1/4" screw-on adapter. I'd also like the option to use an aftermarket or DIY cable to further tweak the sound... Those issues aside, the MPH-2 are a great buy!

Comments about Marantz MPH-2 Professional Studio Headphones:
I was super excited to get this from the Stupid Deal of the Day because I had been needing a new pair of studio headphones for home recording. Bad decision. Literally the second time I put the headphones on, they fell apart and broke into pieces. Sent it back, I'm going with a different pair of headphones.

Comments about Marantz MPH-2 Professional Studio Headphones:
Overall it is a good sounding cans, maybe a bit bassy for some people, but I'm a bass player so l love it and it is a very easy listening device, I own very expensive hi end audio equipment, and this headphones is good enough for me, now the bad part, the hinges came apart after 3 uses, I thought it was just the screw got loose, no the plastics that hold down the the screw were all shattered into pieces, how can a brand new headphone with the aged plastics, I have to use electrical tape to tape it up, sad, it could be a five star product, now I would not recommend this to anyone.

Comments about Marantz MPH-2 Professional Studio Headphones:
I was quite impressed by the sound reproduction of these relatively inexpensive headphones. Unfortunately, they were sitting on my head the second time I used them, and cracked and fell apart solely from the spring pressure of the headband. The part that broke was the plastic mount between the right ear cup and the telescoping arm. I'm rating this product well, at this time, as I have only the one experience, and I'm sure it would be a fine product if not for this immediate breakage

Comments about Marantz MPH-2 Professional Studio Headphones:
Bought these as a "stupid deal of the day" but still had to return them. Although they are quite comfy, there is WAY too much bass here and I would never use these as studio headphones. I'll stick with Sennheiser 280Hd's any day.

Comments about Marantz MPH-2 Professional Studio Headphones:
I bought a pair of the MPH-2's in a SDoD to have as extra closed back headphones for my studio. I find the sound is heavy on bass and dull throughout compared to my hi end Sennheisers. Usable for studio monitoring for performers but not for close listening. Also, they are quite large so may not fit well on some performers.

Comments about Marantz MPH-2 Professional Studio Headphones:
I'm no pro at recording. I record at home primarily as a hobby. I was using studio "style" headphones prior to getting these. They sound great for what I do. I cannot hear any external sound and the clarity of my recordings as well as just casual listening such as I-Tunes, YouTube, etc. it exceptional.
Comments about MPH-2 Professional Studio Headphones:
Very happy with these headphones. They are a bit on the heavy side, and took a few days to get used to the fit and heft, but now I find them quite comfortable. They do make my ears a bit warm, a price I am willing to pay for the relative isolation they provide. As for sound quality, I am extremely satisfied. I have been known to wear headphones for under ten seconds before rejecting them outright, so be sure that I am particular about sound. These are quite good.

Comments about Marantz MPH-2 Professional Studio Headphones:
I was disappointed to see that these headphones are designed to require a special 3.5mm cable, and that the cable that came with the headphones was a little faulty after just one day. Mine are already going in and out after day one. Seems like this was designed to suck money from the consumer.
Overall sound quality is good however.
