Overview

An arsenal of iconic mics at your fingertips.

The Universal Audio Sphere DLX modeling microphone is much more than just another condenser to add to your collection—it's an entire mic modeling system that utilizes state-of-the-art technology to bring 38 of the most legendary microphones to your fingertips. Combining UA’s flagship dual-capsule condenser with the innovative Sphere Mic Collection plug-in, the Sphere DLX microphone modeling system includes precise emulations of a coveted collection of condenser, dynamic and ribbon microphones from storied names like Neumann, TELEFUNKEN, Sony, AKG and more.

A powerful mic in its own right, the Universal Audio Sphere DLX features a large-diaphragm dual-capsule design with dual outputs to capture the sound field in beautiful three-dimensional detail. Use it to record in stereo, precisely control polar patterns, or even modify direction and distance with the click of a mouse. With its vast digital microphone locker and advanced modeling capabilities, the Sphere DLX is designed to give you more control over your sound than ever before.

Advanced Modeling to Unlock Legendary Sounds

The Sphere Mic Collection plug-in gives you access to an entire virtual library of analog-emulated microphones meticulously crafted with Universal Audio’s industry-leading modeling technology. Navigating the easy-to-use plug-in is like diving into the mic locker of your dreams—you'll find classic condensers like the Neumann U 47 and Sony C-37A alongside dynamic mics like the Shure SM7 and ribbon mics like the Beyerdynamic M 160. It’s a collection that would set you back thousands upon thousands of dollars in the real world.

Each mic is painstakingly modeled to replicate not only the tonal characteristics of its source material, but also its off-axis response and polar patterns. Best of all, there’s no need to lock in your selection before you hit record. With Sphere’s intuitive click-through navigation, you can audition mics before, during or after recording, allowing you to compare sonic characteristics and choose the perfect model for your project.

Dual Capsules for Unmatched Flexibility and Control

The secret to the Sphere DLX’s extremely sensitive modeling capabilities lies in its dual-capsule design. The Sphere system works by manipulating the two identical gold-sputtered diaphragms to capture the entire sound field and recreate the exact sonic characteristics of a wide range of mics. You can tweak your settings after the fact to dial in the perfect sound. Adjust the polar pattern to allow in more ambience or attenuate bleed, rotate your mic virtually for a more off-axis sound, apply a high-pass filter to reduce proximity effect—the opportunities for fine-tuning are endless. And with its enormous dynamic range and extremely low self-noise of just 7dB-A, the Sphere DLX is the perfect canvas for all your sonic experimentations.

Expansive Stereo Sound From a Single Mic

The Sphere system’s Dual Mode allows you to use two microphone models simultaneously to blend rich composite sounds from sources like drums and guitar amps. While the microphones are automatically phase-aligned, you can virtually move them to play with different phasing effects. Taking full advantage of the Sphere DLX’s dual large-diaphragm condenser capsules, the included Sphere 180 plug-in allows you to capture sound in gorgeous stereo detail. With precise control over width and panning, you can effortlessly translate the immersive qualities of a performance precisely as it sounds in the room—piano, strings, overheads and acoustic guitar are just a handful of instruments that sound larger than life.

38 Classic Models to Choose From

The Sphere Mic Collection software includes an impressive lineup of 38 microphone models based on classic large-diaphragm condensers, small-diaphragm condensers, ribbon mics and dynamic mics. These models include:

  • LD-47K
  • LD-67
  • LD-87 Vintage
  • LD-37A
  • LD-251
  • SD-416

Innovative Software Tools for Pristine Sound

Many high-end condensers are designed for use in immaculate, low-noise studios. The UA Sphere DLX, however, is designed to meet you where you are—even if that’s an untreated, echoey room. While many turn to reflection filters to tame room sounds in tough acoustic spaces, these foam devices tend to bring their own color to recordings. With the Sphere software’s innovative IsoSphere tool, you can remove these unwanted characteristics, opening up your sound while preserving the pristine quality of your home recordings. To further minimize room coloration, the Sphere DLX also offers Off-Axis Correction, an intelligent function that optimizes off-axis frequency response to smooth out ambient sounds and attenuate bleed.
