I'm not a pro musician I am a hobbyist, so take this review as you will. Well, I'll start by saying the unit is heavy, but as a result, rugged. Not a pile of plastic like some others. The sound quality is good on everything I've recorded, and also no hum or noise for me so far. My last recorder only sampled at 32 KHz, so this may be a relative judgement. The unit lacks effects, but many similar units that have effects have half-*ssed effects anyway.CF cards are not the cheapest thing, if I ever buy a new board it WILL have a hard drive. CF cards fill up quick and then you either have to buy a new card or backup to a computer. Gets to be a pain. The interface is simple and can be learned in very little time, no huge learning curve. Some other units require a large time investment when all you want to do is lay down some tracks, this one does not. Sucks to let inspiration pass you by while you're trying to figure the interface out.I would recommend this unit for the recording/guitar hobbyist.

This thing is utter -junk-.First off, if you're wanting to use built-in effects, make sure that whatever bozo sells this to you understands that you -need- built in effects... this unit does -not- have such. Now, aside from that... NOISY.Whether TRS or XLR, the gain has to be cranked to the max, and of course, after that... noisy and distorted.I swear, Candid Camera must be waiting in the wings to see who buys this, and they probably have a hidden mini-camera attached to this unit to see our reactions at what a bad joke this machine is.

TASCAM..this one really does what it says it will!

By White Beard

Having graduated from my Yamaha M-44 to this was a light year leap. Once I called the Customer Service people to find out how you use it, it was all good. The instructions are a bit hard to understand, other than that, I was recording in about 5 minutes after the guy set me up. Excellent tech-service people that knew just what to do. I will buy another TASCAM in the years to come, but it will be a much larger one when I finally get the studio built that I want. BUY THIS if you want to start recording in a very quick manner. The only draw back, like many others is that it only records TWO tracks at a time, but who needs more if they are doing it at home? It's great!

The Cat's Meow!!!

Ask me a question

I have been a recording musician for 25+ years and I have to say that from a cost/performance perspective the "Portastud" is by far the best multitrack recorder out there today. Very easy to operate and contrary to some reviews I beleive the manual was easy enough to understand if you have a basic knowledge of digital recording. The lack of effects is a non-issue, get a yamaha or lexicon MFX unit, you will be more pleased with the end result. This is not a full production studio in a box, but rather a very excellent and usable link in your home studios audio chain. I've done full productions on my unit with amazing results. Overall I couldn't be more pleased. I looked at alot of digital multitracks before I bought my "Portastud"...I'm glad I held out. Tascam rules again. Thanks

INCREDIBLE VALUE!!

I have been a BOSS BR series user for years but gave up all my consoles for CPU recording earlier this year....I found myself missing the ease and convienence of a "stand alone" unit so I thought I have little to lose trying this Portastud. Let me tell you, for my money, Tascam has won me over big time! Very well constructed (The knobs are nice and smooth!) Great back-lit display!!....USB 2.0 gives me the best of both worlds (I can master and store on my PC)..I would recommend the use a good external mic-pre as the on board input may seem a liitle soft. This little beauty blew me absolutely away!! WHAT A GREAT UNIT & I still can't believe the price!!

Perfect Home Recording

By Farf Fignuton

from Rhode Island

I just received the Portastud as a gift today, and I couldn't be more satisfied. There's no better recorder for small, personal home recordings than this board. The interface is incredibly easy to use, and I was able to fully function the machine and use all of it's features easily and problem-free without having to read the user's manual. The effects loop is a nice touch, and it comes with a free 1 gig flash card so you can start recording right away. The only problems I've noticed is that the EQ is a little weak, but this hardly matters when you're mastering the final tracks on a computer. I say for small personal use, it's the perfect product.

keyboardist/ own it

By bclb68

from Washington DC

This is a great device but, the instructions are not very clear. The sound of the recording is okay and mastering is a little hard to understand. Also there needs to be a quick reference guide for those musicians who are just using this type of product for the first time. You might have a little trouble with downloading your tracks to your PC if you are not use to this product.

Not enough space after recording a few tracks

By Tommy Tele

from Glasgow, UK

I got this the other day - quickly worked out how to record on to the free 1Gb card. but after only a few songs can 't master any tracks as saying not enouh disk space. There is only 500Mb available as the other 500M is used for FAT partition - any ideas on how to solve this as there is now way you can do a dozen tracks with the 1Gb that I can see - also the tracks I did only have 2 inputs used as tests. Hmmmm

Great for solo recording

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

A simple, straight forward unit. It's ease of use with good features, makes it a very enjoyable and easily used 8 track. For effects send, I use a boss ME-50 (with left and right outputs) and sometimes Compressor, and it returns perfectly. I am happy with it as my first proper recording set up.

Read the directions

By cptobvious

from Washington, DC

So I bought this a month or so ago and I am thoroughly pleased. I read the reviews talking about how the directions were confusing and it was painful to use. It literally only took one evening for me to figure it out. It's really easy to use once you figure it out. Granted, you only have 2 inputs and can only record two tracks at once. If you need more than that, then expect to spend much more. At the price, you can't beat it. Pick up an 8G cf card for 30 bucks online and there you go.....in business. It's a solid build by the way, which is nice for a change!

Great Product!

By muscianswife

from Tulsa

I had my husband buy this for me. It is so easy to use and is amazing at all it will do. I'm very happy with the quality of the sound. I am recording some of my old (10 years old) cassettes to this and putting them of CD and the sound is awesome. I would recommend to this product to anyone. We got the one that is mislabeled which has nothing to with how this product works.

THE PORTASTUD

Ask me a question

Well right out of the box this thing was very easy to use. I haven't even opened up the book yet and I am already recording and bouncing tracks. It is piece of cake compared to other units I have used. The sound is great and totally noiseless, my guitar has never sounded so good. It has all the features of a more expensive unit and the usb adds a real nice touch. Just a great machine I think, thanks Tascam.

TASCAM DP-02CF

By imbored

from Southern California

The instruction manual doesnt help very much so it took me a day to learn how to work everything, but once I learned everything, it was easy. I would recommend buying all the cables and stands etc. before you get it in the mail. I didn't do that so I couldnt even use it for 2 days. This thing gets the job done with no complications. The tracks sound a lot better than I expected too. Great little studio for recording in your bedroom like me. And it looks a lot cooler than most 8 tracks too!

Portastud Let Down

By Doody O'Neil

See all my reviews

I purchased the Tascam Portastud for garage recording. I must of gotten a bad one. The Master Playback button did not work. I would laydown a track then could not listen to it. I called Tascam customer support and after holding for 25 minutes decided to ship it back for a refund. My opinion: if you get a good one you scored if not, you to will experience Portastud Let Down

Tascam feedback

By ThoughtSynth

This recording machine is awesome. It is so easy to manuver through and get done what you need to get done, no hassle, no added bullcrap...just plain and simple and it provides a great sound. I highly recomend this item, my band used it to make our full length album and at an extremely affordable price.

ROCK ON ImI

By dan the man-EvXn1

Like all recording, it is hard to figure out at first then it all comes natural. I almost bought the more expensive model but I didnt have the money I like this model because it was realatively cheap. The sound quality is clean and it has 8 tracks of recording. I recommend for those who like simplicity and saving money.

lemon

By chief15534

from Buffalo MIlls, PA

I must have gotten the lemon cause my Portastud was a bust. Nothing worked properly. I went through the manual page by page to see if it was me or the product. After 6 hours, I decided that it was a pice of junk and returned the next day for a refund. Very disappointed in this product. I have other Tascam products that work great, but not this one. You get what you pay for.
