OVERVIEW

Four-track audio recording for music, film, podcasting and more.

The H4n Pro is packed with features that make it perfect for capturing audio for film. The onboard X/Y microphones deliver spectacular stereo imaging, and two combo input jacks allow you to use your favorite microphones as well. It also includes a headphone/line out jack to easily send high-definition stereo directly to your camera.

Unmatched In Concert
The Pro is perfect for capturing live performances. Capable of handling up to 140 dB SPL, it can record everything from ear-splitting heavy metal to bass-heavy EDM. Take a line-level* stereo feed from your mixing console and capture room ambience with the X/Y microphones to put your listeners front row center.

Podcasters and Journalists
The H4n Pro provides the essential combination of mic’ing versatility, portability, and superior audio necessary for impactful storytelling. With support for plug-in power, you can use a lavalier to mic up your subject for podcasts or interviews. Record time-stamped WAV files to sync with video footage in post-production, or embed superior audio directly on your video in real-time through a 1/8" stereo feed.

High-Performance Mic Preamps
The Pro features the same high performance, low-noise mic preamps as our acclaimed Zoom H5 and H6 Handy Recorders, with recording and playback at resolutions up to 24-bit/96 kHz. The improved noise floor (-120 dBu EIN) captures audio at lower volumes with less noise and fewer artifacts.

Built-in Stereo Recording
X/Y stereo recording covers a wide area while capturing sound sources in the center with clarity and definition. The angle of its two unidirectional condenser mics can easily be changed from 90 degrees for a tightly focused stereo image to 120 degrees for a wider image simply by twisting the mic capsules.

Inputs
The two locking combo connectors accept either XLR or 1/4" balanced/unbalanced phone cables, handling mic- and line-level signals as well as instrument-level signals. Phantom Power of +24 or +48 volts can be applied to both inputs. Plus, there’s a stereo 1/8" Mic jack for external audio sources, including lavalier microphones requiring 2.5 volts of plug-in power.

Outputs
A stereo 1/8" Line/Phone Out, with dedicated volume control, allows for headphone monitoring or connection to your DSLR, while the built-in monophonic speaker allows for quick playback reference. In addition, a USB port enables fast file transfer, firmware updates, and use as a 2-in/2-out audio interface for computers.

Three Ways to Record
STEREO MODE uses the built-in X/Y microphones (or external mics) and is convenient for recording live performances, acoustic instruments, dialogue, and more.

In 4CH MODE, you can record with the built-in X/Y mics and two external inputs simultaneously, great for getting live room sound and a stereo board feed at the same time.

MTR MODE (Multi-track Mode) turns your device into a four-track studio, with built-in effects, overdub functions, and the ability to work with previously recorded sound files.

Onboard Effects
The Pro offers studio-grade effects and emulators to enhance your recordings. Choose from a variety of effects, including compression, limiting, reverb, delay, echo, a low-cut filter and more.

There's an onboard metronome and tuner, along with dozens of amp models and effects crafted for guitar and bass. Additionally, you can loop playback and adjust pitch and speed independently, making the H4n Pro a perfect tool for phrase training.

Supported File Types
The Pro records audio in both WAV and MP3 formats. It supports 16- and 24-bit WAV audio at sampling rates of 44.1, 48, or 96 kHz. The WAV files are automatically time-stamped, making them Broadcast Wave Format (BWF) compliant, allowing precise synchronization in post-production.

The H4n Pro accepts SD and SDHC cards up to 32 gigabytes. The charts below show maximum recording times for different file types and card sizes.

Edit and Record Software Included
The H4n Pro comes with free download licenses for Steinberg’s Cubase LE music production software and WaveLab LE audio editing software, representing a complete audio production toolkit. Create your own music utilizing the Pro’s USB audio interface function or expand your capabilities with Steinberg’s renowned audio software.

Comments about Zoom H4n Pro Handy Recorder:

I got this product in my tuition package from school. At first i thought it was just a really powerful recorder. Turns out you can turn this into an interface and even has two xlr mic ports with 48v phantom power. This is incredibly useful as you can use this for an on the go interface or connecting it to a shotgun mic and syncing it with a camera.

Comments about Zoom H4n Pro Handy Recorder:

My main use is amateur multi-track music recording. I play one instrument / voice at a time to a single track while monitoring one or more playback tracks. One typical use is a simple guitar and voice arrangement involving only two tracks. Guitar goes on track 1 and different voice attempts go on tracks 2, 3, and 4. Then I pick the best voice track to keep. The problem I have with the H4n Pro is that it is very cumbersome to mute a track, such as a voice track, that I don't want to hear. You have to go into a menu for that track and turn the volume down all the way to "mute" using a thumbwheel, lots of scrolling. Then climb back out of the menu. This makes it hard for me to quickly work comparing tracks or moving between tracks. So I decided to exchange the H4n Pro for the H5 because the H5 track buttons have 3 modes - record, play, or mute. I'm hoping that will be much easier to use. I actually prefer the hard-wired mikes of the H4n Pro over the removable ones on the H5 because I feel that any connector can get noisy or loose over time.

In general, I have mixed feelings about these devices. The main selling point is they are portable and very high quality recorders with enough features you can make music wherever you are. However, they are a bit cumbersome to use compared to a computer DAW (digital audio workstation). They are also being heavily marketed toward the DSLR video market, so perhaps features are not just optimized for musicians. For example, it would be useful for a musician to be able to turn the screen upside down so it is easier to read when pointing the mikes toward you. The H5 does have a remote control accessory which should at least make recording yourself a little easier. It would be great if there were a way to control the device with an app on your phone.I think for musicians, the accessory kit should always include a 1/4 inch to mike stand adapter so the device can be mounted on a conventional mike stand instead of a tripod.

Comments about Zoom H4n Pro Handy Recorder:

        This little unit is phenomenal!!
I use it to record our gigs so we can critique our performance. The built-in mic is very versitile, and you can adjust the width from 90 to 120 degrees. When connected to the board via XLR input, you get a clean, sterile recording. I video some of our gigs, but the built-in mics on the camcorder just can't pick up the wide spectrum of the music. I layer the sound from the H4N and I get a great sounding music video!
It has multitrack functions but I don't like to bother with ping-ponging tracks, so I rather use my Tascam for recording. It may come in handy for writers whe want to capture their moments of inspiration though. I also use this to aid in my final mix down. Since the sound has minimal degradation, I mix down into the H4N and use it to transport the adio file from my 24 track to the computer. It's a redundant action if I connect the Tascam to the computer via USB but since they're in separate rooms...
Bottom line is; Great unit, awesome versatility, Great sound, powerful tool, and don't skimp. GET THE HARD CASE.

Comments about Zoom H4n Pro Handy Recorder:

I wanted something to try and record solo acoustic shows this summer. Having a full studio at my house I was a little skeptical of something so small, but figured I'd give it a shot. I've been recording music just at my house getting used to it and I have to say the H4n has really blown my away. The quality is very good, think recording with a SM-58, that type of quality. It's very easy to use with more than enough options, you can easily add 2 condenser mics along with effects. Easily transfers to my DAW and I might just have a live acoustic CD by the end of this summer, thanks to the H4n Pro Handy Recorder.

Comments about Zoom H4n Pro Handy Recorder:

I don't know what to say about this recorder that hasn't already been said. So much thought has gone into the design of this product that it's hard to think of anything that's missing. (Timecode? Not sure how that would work). So far I've only used the built-in mics. Looking forward to 4-channel recording and overdubbing. I wish a recorder like this had been available when I started writing songs over 50 years ago. Fantastic value!

Only gotten to test once in a live music situation so far. Sound recorded was pretty good! Having great difficulty downloading the free CueBase software. Still haven't successfully but will continue until i do. I will describe my problem and solution as well. Gonna record direct from the mixer this weekend and will give an update.
