Ideal string for mid-scale semi hollow body

By Joseph McElroy

from Downingtown, PA

Comments about D'Addario ENR71M Half Rounds Light Bass Strings:

Overall great tone, durability and feel
These strings are easy on the fingers and keeps the fretboard noise to a minimum
These strings hold their tone for about 200 hours playing time or 6 months. The winding at the bridge end of the string is smooth. The length of the string is ideal for my 32.5 inch length neck.
First this style, length and weight of string is hard to find. The price is hard to compare because there are few similar strings, The price is very competitive compared to strings in general

  • Easy on the fingers
  • Good range .045 - .100

  • Not Consistent

Best Uses

Comments about D'Addario ENR71M Half Rounds Light Bass Strings:

I prefer Rotosound flats BUT their sets for medium scale have low E of .090 making them "floppy" or "loose" when tuned up. I tried the ENR71M half rounds which have low E of .100 which is great for tension BUT the low E's seem to be dead sounding and not bright like the other strings in the set. I bought multiple sets but all the E strings seem to be same way. I finally tried an old low E round wound and that seemed to do the trick.
So...is the problem in quality control, a design flaw or maybe I just got some bad sets? I wish I knew...

Comments about D'Addario ENR71M Half Rounds Light Bass Strings:

bought medium scale for my club bass. was surprised to find the strings ends were not wrapped. it's like you bought long scale and cut 4" off each one. d'addario cheaped out by not providing strings consistant with the quality of their other sets.

Comments about D'Addario ENR71M Half Rounds Light Bass Strings:

Got these on my short scaled Squier bass, and they sound and feel awesome! They bring some real bass to the tone of the bass, but still maintain a bit of those highs for slapping, etc.

Comments about D'Addario ENR71M Half Rounds Light Bass Strings:

I use these on my Hofner copy. With the tailpiece, I found short scale strings were just a bit too short.

I started using the long scale version on my fretless JB a while back to get that 60s sound and reduce wear on the rosewood fretless fingerboard. I found that they excelled on all genres with the right EQ. I now use them on all of my basses. They are the perfect mix of round and thumpy with round wound sustain. A win-win.

Comments about D'Addario ENR71M Half Rounds Light Bass Strings:

Although I haven't tried them all, I'm very happy with these strings. They have a great mellow sounds and work great for playing at church. I have had compliments from much more experienced musicians on both my Peavey Grind and the sound these strings produce. Definitely a winner!
