OVERVIEW

Engineered to recreate the best features of classic Strat pickups without the noise.

The DiMarzio Area Strat Pickup set contains 3 well-designed pickups: the Area '58 (neck), the Area '67 (middle), and the Area '61 (bridge). Easy to install, they'll bring a collection of authentic tones to your Strat-style guitar while reducing noise.

The Area '58 (neck)
There are two major differences between a great vintage Strat pickup and an average one: treble response and dynamics. A great pickup is clear and bright, but not thin-sounding. A great one makes the sound jump out of the amp when you pick hard and drop way down when you play softly, and the tone varies when the string is picked at different spots. The best pickup DiMarzio ever heard like this was from 1958, and that's what inspired the Area 58, with two major differences. This pickup has way less magnet pull, and virtually no hum.

The Area 58 has obvious similarities to the Virtual Vintage 2.1 it replaces, but there are several non-visible performance factors that have changed. Dynamic range and string definition are greatly increased, leading to improvements in both clean chord-playing and overdriven soloing. The Area 58 is very sensitive to small height adjustment differences: close to the strings produces a fatter, slightly compressed blues tone and further away yields crystal clean sounds. The final improvement is in noise reduction. All of the Virtual Vintage pickups have better hum cancellation than full-size humbuckers. Area 58 and Area 61 are even quieter.

The Area '67 (middle)
The Monterey Pop Festival of 1967 was a watershed event in American music. When it was over, the world had heard and felt the sound of a Strat in the hands of a master. Single-coils in 1967 were bright and very clean. And, of course, they hummed. DiMarzio has captured the classic bright and clean sound but totally eliminated the hum with their patented Area technology. They've also reduced magnet pull by 40% for improved sustain and clarity. The Area 67 has the chime of 60s pickups, and the 2 and 4 positions are light, bright and quack-happy.

Strat pickups in the late 1960s used full-strength Alnico 5 magnets. The patented magnetic field of the Area models is more efficient and focused than it is on "true" single-coils, which allows us to use Alnico 2 instead. There's much less magnet pull, but no loss of output. This is a major advantage in the neck and middle positions, where sustain and intonation can both suffer if the strings are exposed to strong magnetic fields. In the bridge position, the patented technology of the Area 67 produces a sound that's very bright but not brittle.

The Area '61 (bridge)
DiMarzio has been working on serious vintage single-coil design with no hum for twelve years. Their goal has always been to capture the best qualities of pickups heard from the 1950s and early 60s. They played several pickups from the early 60s that had a unique tonality: they were steely, yet woody-sounding. Naturally, DiMarzio wanted to nail this sound, and wanted to do it with no hum and less magnet-pull. The Area 61 does it.

Over the last 10 years DiMarzio has gotten hundreds of requests from guitarists asking for the Texas blues sound. This sound is centered on single-coils from the early 1960's, but it's also based on heavy strings and strong hands. We can't change your strings or your hands, but the Area 61 captures the tonal bedrock this sound is based on. Like the Area 58, the Area 61 really responds to different pick attacks: played hard, it sounds louder and tougher than you'd expect from a vintage pickup, but it cleans up immediately by picking softer or rolling down the volume control. And like the Area 58, its ability to cancel hum is superior to full-size humbuckers.

I installed these into an American Vintage Reissue '62 Stratocaster, replacing the vintage pickups which hummed like crazy. What an improvement they made. I get the best of vintage Strat sounds, without any noise! I really like the '58-'67-'61 combination, as I can get so many different sounds from them, but all very "Fender" in their flavor. Love the Strat "quack" in positions 2 and 4. I've owned four American Strats over the years, including a Strat Plus equipped with Gold Lace Sensors, a guitar that I loved. This current guitar with the DiMarzio Zone set, beats it by a good stone's throw. Bravo DiMarzio!

The Dimarzio Area set, as advertised, is very quiet. And, as reputed *very* sensitive to both touch and setup. They are WAY WAY WAY different than the original Fender pickups.

These pickups have *lots* of bite, perhaps even too much. I ended up putting in .47UF capacitors and wiring it with 7 way wiring and dual tone. I felt I had to get some control of the sound.

Additionally to get a decent sound and sustain I had to change to 10-52 strings from my hybrid 9-46 to rid some of that extra quack. If quack is what you're looking for, these are the pickups for you.

I do want to say that with my current setup they have a crystalline sound to them. Clear and glassy. Lots of punch when you need it. Not sure if I'm going to keep them or trade them for something different.

I like them, but I think if I had to do it again I would buy something else.

Comments about DiMarzio Area Strat Pickup Set:

In my opion these are the BEST noiseless Stratocaster replacement pickups on the market today! I have tried all the others and these capture to true single coil sound without the terrible 60 cycle hum! This combo of 58 in the neck...67 in the middle...and 61 in the bridge cover all the bases if you want to upgrade any Strat type single coil guitar....plus the inbetween "QUACK" postions are pure heaven! In most of my Strats I use the 250 tone and volume pots...then adjust the pick up hights to find the sweet spot for each pickup....PURE TONE HEAVEN!

Comments about DiMarzio Area Strat Pickup Set:

Great, Quiet Pickups with strat like tones. Once installed you have to tweak the pickup heights, tone/volume knobs to get those strat like tones. Very Quiet, Handles high gain in neck and middle especially well. The 67 is bright for me and I may go with the 58/58/61 setup as others have done. Humbuckers will never replicate a true warm single coil sound but these sure do get real close without the hum.

Comments about DiMarzio Area Strat Pickup Set:

I've had this set of strat pickups for over 3 years now, so I finally feel well qualified to review them. First of all, I've put them in a Mexican Frankenstrat (neck from one MexiStrat, body from a totally different MexiStrat) with a maple fretboard, and I play mostly rock, ranging from clean alt rock/americana to heavily distorted hard rock. Secondly, I've owned literally hundreds of guitars through the years, and I'm a serious gear hound, so I know my stuff. Finally, for direct comparison's sake, I ran these pickups through their paces and then compared them to my brother's strat, which has Fender Custom Shop Fat 50s pickups in it (though his strat has a rosewood fretboard, which does make a bit of a difference in how the two strats sound).

These pickups are DEAD QUIET. Quieter by far than most of my humbucker-equipped guitars. Noise in not an issue at all. As to sound, wow. These are some of the best sounding single coils available (yes, I realize they are not true single coils, but they sure sound like they are). Compared to the Fat 50s, the DiMarzio's are not quite a glassy at the very top end, and the Area 58 in the neck has noticeably more bass than the Fat 50 neck, but other than that these pickups sound very, very close to each other. If I was strictly recording in a studio wherein 60 cycle interference wasn't much a problem, I would probably stick with some of the best Fender single coils, but for my purposes (which includes a lot of gigs in various electronic environments), these are simply the best sounding, most useful pickups to have in my strat. The cleans are exactly what you'd expect from a strat, and the distortion tones are a thing of beauty, as all of the single coil articulation is still present, without that annoying persistent buzz that true single coils always have.

If you want great sounding noiseless single coils for your strat, you cannot find a quieter or better sounding set of pickups than these. Highly, highly recommended.

Comments about DiMarzio Area Strat Pickup Set:

I've used this exact set for more than a year. Having tried extreme shielding techniques on my Strat, I could never get rid of the single coil hum to my satisfaction. I love the sound and response of single coil pickups compared to humbuckers. I tried Seymour Duncan stacked single coil pickups, but they sacrificed some of the single coil snap and sparkle I enjoy... ended up putting stock back in. When I found these, I was blown away. Simply amazing. I don't see how anyone could tell the difference from the equivalent single coil pickups other than these are dead quite and sound better than many stock pickups. One reviewer said the mid-range was missing from these. Perhaps compared to an overwound Texas style single coil pickup of some kind, one might hear the difference. That what the Area 61 is for. The other models have more treble. Of course every guitar can have it's own voice for different reasons. All I know is that these sound better than my stock pickups in my Strat and I can finally stop twiddling with it and just love playing it.

Comments about DiMarzio Area Strat Pickup Set:

I play a lot of fast/ focused hybrid and legato stuff as well lots of small voiced chords. These pickups work amazingly at all levels clean and dirted up. They give a very balanced representation of the strings. Two mods I suggest while you have the guitar open and are putting in the pickups. Shift the middle tone knob onto the bridge so you have tone on the bridge and neck also replace a tone knob with a push pull/knob that reverse the contacts on the 5 way for the neck and middle pick up. This will let you run the guitar like a tele when you have the 5 way in the middle position. The combination of these pick ups provides a super inspiring tone. I have these in a very light and battered mexican strat body with a full maple warmouth neck(10-16 rad) and hipshot bridge. its the best guitar I have ever owned.

Comments about DiMarzio Area Strat Pickup Set:

I installed these p-ups (58 neck, 67 mid, 61 bridge) in my ash body, rosewood fret board American strat. I got rid of the middle p-up tone jumper ,for the Eric Johnson style wiring, so I now have a bridge only tone. I never use the middle position on the 5 way switch anyway. Back to the pick-ups, they were very well made, and fit great. They don't have the glass and crispness of the single coils but that is a small price to pay for pure silence in an environment full of dimmers, fluorescent lights and 60 cycle hum. The 2 & 4 positions yield plenty of strat quack, the 58 neck pure cleans, while the 61 bridge does the same but can still dish out the grit. Way to go Dimarzio!

Comments about DiMarzio Area Strat Pickup Set:

Great pickup set. VERY quiet (they are NOT single-coils; they are stacked humbuckers.) They really nail vintage tones with perhaps the tiniest bit more bass and less glassy treble. All in all, it's just like a strat should sound.I think MF has made a minor error in the description, though: the '61 is the highest output of the three and wants to be in the bridge position while the '67 has the most highs and will give you the best quack in the middle position. The pre-wired pickguards come that way so I guess DiMarzio themselves think that's best.

Comments about DiMarzio Area Strat Pickup Set:

These pickups Rock! I put these in my Highway One and it has brought new life to my Strat! I play mainly blues and rock, and these pickups offer all the tone I'm looking for, without the hum! You can definitely tell the difference between all 3 pickups. I play these through a Fender amp and wow these things scream! They are easy to install too. They just require a little soldering and bang you're done. Great job Dimarzio!

These are some pretty good pickups. I wanted to upgrade my 1991 MIM strat i had already put 69 custom shop pups in one of my strats that turned out good....but these humbucking pickups give you u a little added thump and tonal options than single coils. You can get a humbucking tone out of all the pickups and still have that well known strat sound. Overall you cant go wrong with these if u wanna add more tone to your guitar.

Comments about DiMarzio Area Strat Pickup Set:

Super pleased with these. I play in a very electrically noisy environment and even with heavy shiedling inside the guitar, I was still getting a lot of hum. These replaced a set of Fender Tex-Mex pickups and sounded similar, althought these are hotter. The noise is gone. There's a very small amount of hum but the only time you can hear it is when I'm alone in the room. Now I can play anywhere on stage, in any switch position, with no hum concerns. I'm sold!
Went with the recommendations inside the packaging. Setup pickup height as listed.

I should clarify that I later discovered that the reason the Tex-Mex (and any other single-coils) were so noisy was that although I had put a copper foil loop around the outer perimeter of the pickup covers, the foil was not touching the foil on the back of the pickguard. I have two identical, fully shielded strats with Tex-Mex pickups, one noisy and one not, and discovered a tiny gap around the noisy one's pickup shielding. So, heads up - make sure your pickups are shielded around the outside and that the sheilding is grounded before you go doing other crazy things like buying expensive pickups.
Comes with quality screws and springs.
Black and white wires were already tied together and shielded so I only had to hook up the red and green wires. The wires were pre-stripped and tinned easily during soldering. Pickup covers were gleaming white, magnet pole pieces have beveled edges which prevents fracturing or catching on your strings/hands.
3x as expensive as the ones they replaced, but once you play, you forget the cost.

Comments about DiMarzio Area Strat Pickup Set:

I bought these to replace my Seymour Duncan ssl-1 (vintage for strat) pickups due to the crazy amount of noise I was receiving when playing. I went through a full journey with switching to these pickups so here it is...

The ssl-1's are extremely reasonably priced pickups and sound amazing (good enough for John Frusciante, good for any of us regular dudes). However, my room in my old house has the dirtiest power, and I also have my tv, laptop, sound system, phone charger, etc. all coming form essentially the only 3 prong outlet in my room (via surge protector). Every time I would take my hands off the strings, BOOM, loud obnoxious buzz and noise. Even with hands on strings, still would hum/buzz at just a lower volume. I decided to try the Area series out due to their good vintage sounding reputation and the noiseless benefits.

Well, they didn't solve my hands off the strings noise problems so at first I though I was duped. However, with hands on the strings, the guitar is dead quiet (unless using with distortion pedal or cranked BOSS compressor). So if you ever experience noise with hands off the strings that either quiets or goes away when you touch the strings, THIS IS COMPLETELY NORMAL. Your guitar is properly grounded.

So I know I've been long winded, but after jamming with these installed for 2-3 hours today, I realized that I can still get great frusciante tones out of them, and I also can crank my amp in a clean or overdriven state and have dead quiet pickups. With distortion, I get slight noise but that's inevitable when you have that much signal being shoved through magnets and into an amp.

If you get these pickups you won't be disappointed. Also, the aged white blends perfectly with Road Worn white stratocaster. Rant over.

I put this set on my 1994 Fender Eric Clapton strat, replacing the stock Fender Gold Lace Sensors. I noticed a significant improvement. Beautiful, clear bell-like tone when clean, and great when overdriven. All 3 pickups were great. In fact, this is the first time that I wanted to play the middle pickup on a strat by itself; it was especially great with rock.

I noticed, however, that the pickup height was critical. I fiddled around and tweaked them-- especially the neck and middle-- and eventually found the sweet spot.

I haven't tried many other strat pickps, so I can't say these are the best. But these sound great, so I'm not interested in trying any others.

I mainly play classic rock with a lightly overdriven sound. Did not like these pickups. They just didnt have the same warmth and tone as the stock fender pickups. To me, they sounded flat and seemed to lack some mid range frequencies. I plan on instead shielding the body to eliminate the hum and keeping the stock fender pickups (which sound fantastic!). Lesson learned

They sound great clean or overdriven, and are very quiet without being sterile. Installation was a snap ( I had never soldered anything in my life) and I was able to do it so you can too. I bought these soley based on the reviews I read online and they did not disappoint!
