OVERVIEW

Tremendous mid-range, bass response, and great harmonics.

The DiMarzio DP189 Tone Zone S Strat Humbucker Pickup brings the famous performance of The Tone Zone to a humbucking Strat replacement pickup. Built-in is the tremendous mid-range and bass response of the original Tone Zone, and the same patented dual-resonance design produces great harmonics. DiMarzio also took into account the likelihood of installing The Tone Zone S in the classic slanted Strat bridge position, warming up the higher frequencies and brightening the low notes a little. It has 4-conductor wiring for parallel humbucking and split-coil modes, and makes a great bridge position combination with the Pro Track (our sku# 302326), The Chopper (our sku# 302460), and Fast Track 1 (our sku# 302441).

Recommended For: Bridge position, solid body guitars. Neck position when a very warm jazz guitar sound is required.

Tech Talk: If you compare the specs of the full-size Tone Zone with those of the Tone Zone S, you will notice they don't match. That's because the trick in building a single-coil size pickup to sound like its big brother is to go for the sound rather than the numbers. DiMarzio also took into account the likelihood that the Tone Zone S will be installed in the classic slanted Strat bridge position, so they warmed up the higher frequencies and brightened the low notes a little to compensate.

Comments about DiMarzio DP189 Tone Zone S Strat Humbucker Pickup:

Now that I've used this pickup in gigs with two different bands, I know it pretty well. This is a GREAT open vowel sound humbucker. I've put it in the bridge position of a 2016 Fender Duo-Sonic (maple neck and fretboard, alder body, 24 inch scale, non slanted positioning), and I'm playing through a Vox AC10 with a Celestion Greenback and an Orange OR15 through an Orange PPC112 cab. I needed a pickup that was somewhat mellow in the top end, to help tame the inherent brightness of the guitar. The TZS is perfect in that regard; I still get crystal, bell like cleans that aren't at all harsh when combined with the neck single coil, and roaring, edgy distortion tones on it's own that cut through the mix without being ice-picky. When soloing, I find that if I roll back on the tone knob to about 6, the tone fattens up to almost Les Paul territory. My favorite aspect of this pickup is the open vowel tone that allows me to shape single notes with my picking technique into sounds that emulate a talk box. Also, pinch harmonics just leap off the strings. The TZS is also very, very quiet, as it picks up almost no electromagnetic interference (one gig I played has the worst electronic setup for bands I've ever seen, where a regular single coil sounded like a buzzsaw, but the TZS was dead quiet). I don't think I'd recommend this pickup for a mahogany bodied guitar, as it would probably be too dark. Likewise, I'm not sure how it would sound in basswood, but alder and ash are what this pickup seems to be made for. Highly recommended.

Comments about DiMarzio DP189 Tone Zone S Strat Humbucker Pickup:

This pickup is very good if you're going to be playing metal or overdriven music most of the time. It does not have a classic Stratocaster sound. It's a very dark pickup and I didn't find it to have much harmonic sustain.

Comments about DiMarzio DP189 Tone Zone S Strat Humbucker Pickup:

I found the Area 61 to be thin sounding for my style. Switched to the Tone Zone S, much better. Good rock tones, and still has the Strat quack in the out of phase positions. Just remember to use the green wire for the hot when pairing it with the Area 58s, otherwise it will be in phase with the middle pickup, and you'll lose your typical Strat tones.

Comments about DiMarzio DP189 Tone Zone S Strat Humbucker Pickup:

I should start out by saying I play metal mostly, and I hate any single coil pup. Most of my strats have the hot rails in the bridge, but I took a chance on something different and I'm glad I did!! Gives the Hot Rail a run for it's money. I installed the Chopper in the neck position and it is a perfect match.

Comments about DiMarzio DP189 Tone Zone S Strat Humbucker Pickup:

I have an Ibanez S470 similar to the old JS models. Three pickup HSH configuration. Mahogany back with a maple front and neck. With a Floyd Rose trem system. The original middle pickup (DiMarzio Virtual Vintage Blues) always sounded to weak and was overpowered by the neck and bridge pickup (DiMarzio PAF Pro, Neck & Mo' Joe, Bridge). I needed something Hot and Smooth to balance out the guitar. The Tone Zone S did the trick. By it self is has a mellow sound similar to the neck pickup on a Strat, only with power. In phase with either pickup it balances well and tends to smooth out the Mo' Joe. Out of phase it quacks like a duck. Very Strat like. Especially for a mahogany and Maple body guitar with all humbuckers.

This is by far the best sounding single coil sized pickup I have ever found for a strat. I have one in my tele as well. Nice fat warm sound, still twangy of you split it. Awesome quality!

Comments about DiMarzio DP189 Tone Zone S Strat Humbucker Pickup:

I have a partscaster Strat that is very high quality. 1-piece alder body with thin nitro finish, flame maple neck with darker rosewood fretboard, gold hardware. It's a great feeling guitar, and beautiful, but my first choice of pickups were Klein Vintage ones and were very low output. Pretty nice but I preferred my other guitars. I replaced the pickups with a Tone Zone S in the bridge and a pair of Criusers in neck and middle. This has now become my go to guitar. The neck and middle are beautifully warm and great for anything from jazzy cleans to blues to rock leads. The bridge Tone Zone S is awesome! I can play anything on that but it stands out with heavier riffs. Even drop tuned stuff is tight and punchy and the notes are clearly distinguishable. This is an amazing combination of pickups. I went from totally ignoring this guitar to loving it and using it all the time.
