OVERVIEW

Specially spaced dual-coil magnetic pickup help soundwaves resonate.

The ACB Banjo Pickup System was developed by EMG founder Rob Turner and combines three technologies to accurately capture the unique tone of a banjo. The first is having a dual-coil pickup, which means the coils are spaced apart from each other to enhance frequency response. The second key is that the ACB is an active pickup with the preamp not only boosting the signal, but ensuring the pickup is noise-free.

As mentioned above, the coils are spaced apart, which allows "air gaps" to be built into the pickup. These air gaps allow soundwaves inside the banjo to resonate between the coil walls and produce an acoustic quality that has not been achieved in a magnetic pickup until now. Each ACB is supplied with "Air Plugs" that can be used to fill the gaps to control the amount of microphonics the pickup has. The third and final technology is the included thin strip (.002 thick) of shim steel. This strip of steel can be placed in a variety of places near one of the coils, between them, or directly over the top of either of the coils. The strip is another addition to the tone; it is not a necessary element to make the pickup work.

Comments about EMG ACB Banjo Pickup System:

I am blown away by the quality of tone I get from this pickup. I installed it on my Deering Sierra 5-string banjo. The installation was very straight forward and after I found the "sweet spot" for the placement of it, I was amazed. I plugged in directly to my Fender Hot Rod Deville guitar amp, in a fairly small room to test it out, and I did not get a bit of feedback.
I'm able to get a great banjo tone without any issues.
I've played banjo since the early 80s and have always used an SM57 microphone for it. I will never go back to the mic after hearing this pickup.

Comments about EMG ACB Banjo Pickup System:

I love this product. the only problem I had was the two rods inside the banjo were higher and the pick up is too far from the banjo head. I am in contact with the manufacturer for a different attachment bracket. I have a Washburn B-16 banjo

Comments about EMG ACB Banjo Pickup System:

The volume control makes this a winner for me; our band uses mics for vocals only; everything else is mixers and amps, so being able to control dynamics in mid-tune is essential. The double pickup configuration eliminates hum, which was a problem with an older pickup, It still doesn't sound like a banjo played into a good mic, but, as mentioned, the volume control makes up for some lack of fidelity.

Comments about EMG ACB Banjo Pickup System:

I have a Mastertone and play primarily through a PA system at church. I have had ribbon style pick ups for a while and found their tone lacking even when boosted through an (expensive) pre-amp. I bought this one one year ago and it works very well. The tone is amazing for an onboard pickup. It is easy to install if you go slow and read the instructions carefully. I can play directly through the board or with a pre-amp. I have a Radial Engineering Tone Bone. I find the output to be very good, with minimal feedback tendencies. I cannot play at full volume setting without having my sound guy scream at me. For bluegrass, I still and will always prefer a microphone but for higher volume live applications, (especially with drums, electric instruments etc.), it cannot be beat.

Comments about EMG ACB Banjo Pickup System:

This seems like a great nexus of pickup systems in one package, yet the overall reality is that it has EXTREMELY low output and for my purposes, going through a mixer with vocals and other sources; it is completely unfunctional. I read, then re-re-reread directions, checked all connections several times, got new batteries..... It produces a signal - a very weak signal. My tip-off should have been all the caveats in reviews and in the directions about feedback. That is a 'tell' that you have to turn the amp up really loud. Oh well. I am a saxophonist by nature and found that my AT 8538 bell mike works much better with it's foam windscreen against the banjo head. When I saw the 'Dust Brothers' live, the banjo player had an AT 8538 positioned thus. I will be returning this for that pronto. Good luck with this!

Comments about EMG ACB Banjo Pickup System:

I recently decided to put a pick up on my banjo, instead of using a mic. After much research I chose the EMG. With one mod to the pre amp, the system installed in 20 minutes. Great sounding, either through an amp or DI'd for recording. Well worth the price.
