I dont agree with the couple of reviews stating that these Pickups are not true to their defintion of a Strat sound. Sorry people but these are among the best sounding Strat sets out there - very dynamic with bell like tones as well as full like a humbucker. Of course, this is in my 2008 Stratocaster Deluxe with S-1 switching. I also had put in a custom made neck made out of quarter-sawn flame fiddleback maple topped with a brazillian rosewood fretboard. The sound occupies my days - I'm never bored playing that thing.

Abstractly speaking SCNs produce a nice guitar sound compared to other guitar brands, and there is nothing wrong if you like it. But as far as I am concerned it is not a true Strat sound as they claim it. It is dull at neck and resembles humbucker sound at the bridge. To have a fair comparison they must be checked on the same guitar as each instrument varies. I have done it on my American Deluxe Strat and replaced them by CS fat 50?s. Before I thought something was wrong with my guitar and equipment. With fat 50s my guitar turned into a real Strat with a sound you would expect from an instrument at that price. Yes, fat 50s have certain humming, not a lot though, but the real vintage sound inspired me and made me play better. And in fact if it makes you play emotionally and have people enjoy your music, who cares about little humming (other than the guitar player himself). My advise: don?t listen to anybody?s advise. Find your sound and be happy.

Review

By Marc-2Ep5O

from Willoughby, OH

I've done hours of research...I just can't tell you how serious I was in chosing new pickups for my 2009 Fender Standard Strat. I had SCNs professionally installed and had the 5 way switch, volume and tone pots replaced with Fender standard 250s and it sounds amazing! If you buy these let the pros install them and spend the money on new internal wiring. You don't need a more powerful volume pot. These pickups provide authentic Fender chime, quack and bell-like tones. The bridge is powerful and even sounds like a tele. I loved the out of phase settings prior (due to the hum canceling really), but NOW I love settings 1, 3 and 5. Truely amazing and completely silent through a heavily overdriven amp. I'd buy these again in a heartbeat! Thanks, Custom Shop.

Fender SCN. Nice innovation!

By deluxe-strat-dude

from GA, U.S.

These Fender SCN pickups designed by Bill Lawrence are definitely in the upper echelon of electric guitar pickups. They came stock in my American Deluxe V Neck Strat. To my ears they have a sound similar to EMG SA active pickups but with more of a vintage snappy edge like with late 60s strat pickups. I am very happy with this versatility because I'm a big Gilmour fan and can get sounds similar to his red or black strat depending on my mood.

I use the middle pickup from this set in my Nashville power tele, and it really has a great tone. It's very responsive to your playing and it has a really nice quack and bell like smoothness to it, try it!

Best Single-Coils

By Kevin -LnnjZ

from MA

These not only have amazing tone, but they truly are noiseless. It's great to get that single-coil sound without the buzz. These pickups came with my Fender American Deluxe Stratocaster and I'll probably never buy another strat; it's just that good.

Versatile Pickups

By Strat4Me

from Undisclosed

See all my reviews

These came stock in my Fender CS Strat Pro and they are really very good sounding versatile pickups that easily cover tones from vintage to modern quite easily. I run 10-46 nickel strings on this Strat too. The key to getting these pickups to sound great is in the height adjustment, and if set properly will really be versatile as well as put out great tone. Start with setting them right at 6/64" on treble side and 8/64" on bass side, then plug into your amp and begin with the neck pickup first and finely tweak it untill you get the best tones and balance, remember, you will be very close to where they need be set, although you may have to tweak one or the other end PU height adjustment screws 1/2 turn to 1 turn max either way. Be patient and the tone is there. Check the Fender Custom Shop Video's for this Strat with SCN's in action for reference to tone.

MIM Strat replacements

By Douglas Hilbert

from PA

Why not a 10? Just because nothing is perfect. These pups may be too bright for some. I had to back off the treble on my Super Champ XD from 5 down to three.
Wow! What a difference. No comparision to the original mim pups. I don't play with a lot of gain so as for noiseless I can't really say, but the tone true Fender.
Price killed the competition. I wanted to replace the harsh stock pups of my 2003 mim Strat and didn't want to break the bank. These SCN pups are perfect. They are high quality, crisp, clear and dirty up nicely.
Great Value when you consider that most Strat sets go for more and here you get noiseless.

Just not Stratty

By Strat Lover-3mUEM

from Mount Vernon

See all my reviews

I got a used Fender Deluxe 50th Anniversary with the SCN noiseless pickups in the neck and middle, and a humbucker in the bridge. These pickups. . . They have a good sound, just not my kind of sound. If you're going for a country twang, these pickups simply are not going to do it. They have no personality, and to my ears, are very flat and bland. They sound pretty good, but just not like a Strat should.

These are Strat pups?

By Rick B.

from Central New Jersey

See all my reviews

Ask me a question

These came in my Fender Custom Shop Pro Strat. Are they noiseless? Yes indeed they are. But they barely have any Strat character. I have tried nickel-wound and pure nickel strings, adjusting the pup heights, and 5 different tube amps. I couldn't get a vintage Strat tone out of these at all. If anything, they are dry and cold, close to the crappy pups Fender put in during the late 70's. The bridge pup is okay, but the other two positions are horrible tone-wise. If you're a tone freak or a vintage fan, look elsewhere.

Heard the negatives and thankfully didn't listen

By DBlues MI

from Detroit

These came stock on my 2006 USA Fender Deluxe Stratocaster (with S1 switch) and they are different than many Strat pups BUT they sound awesome in their own right. LOVE The lack of hum and you can tweak your eq to get almost any Strat tone... including a very nice rounded warm tone --- highly recommend. They

Great tone

By Fat Pup

from Tucson AZ

I agree with most of the reviews, the SNC pickups (2007 Strat Deluxe w/S-1) have great Fender tone, the scooped out sound on the neck pickup, the hollow ring tone on #2 and #4 setting, the middle is perfect for rhythm and lead. I have a bridge humbucker set up and it really sizzles. For those who claim these don't have the true fender tone I would say I've played fenders from '69 models to a 2012 MIM telecaster and all had slightly different "Fender" tone. The only fender pups I will not play are N-3 and N-4. All that I've tested are something other than a Fender tone. In fact my MIM telecast sound better than all the Elite models I tested.

If you come across these be happy don't be afraid

Pros

  • Noiseless

Cons

  • Not made anymore

Best Uses

  • Stratocaster

As a strat pickup there excellent quality and if your looking at getting a guitar with these already in then they are truly noiseless.
Compared to some DiMarzio area pickups they have slightly more detail but as for are they better then like everything its subjective.
Mine are in a Strat Deluxe from 2009 factory fitted

Sound wise the Bridge is nice and not too bright (compared to a texas special) with a similar feel as an Area 61.
I can't compare it to anything else as I don't have the pickups to hand when demoing stuff at the shops I found the bog standard alnico pickups not to my taste.
All modern fender pickups are machine wound if your after a particular vintage sound then you'll need an artists model.

I just bought a Fender 1957 Hot Rod Stratocaster (by the way, the best guitar ever!) and it comes with these for the neck and mid pickups. I think they sound amazing and I even considered dropping a set in my 60th Anniversary American Strat. They're not too hot, and they really offer great vintage tone. I play my Strat through a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and the combination is amazing. You really hear the difference between my Strats. Almost Clapton like sound (minus the playing). They respond really well to effects. Put these in your guitar, you won't be disappointed.

Big change from normal pickups

By R.J.M.

from GA

See all my reviews

These pickups came stock on my American Deluxe and I immediately liked the sound. There is no innate hum and the bridge pickup doesn't generally sound thin or tinny. As for the debate over 'classic fender sound,' I would have to say they don't fall perfectly into one category or the other. Admittedly, I was disappointed by the clean sound as it didn't feel clear or sharp, but that was playing on my fender deluxe 85 solid state amp, and the clean channel has been blown out on it for years. Then I tried an American Deluxe (w/SCNs) on a Fender Hot Rod tube, and I couldn't have asked for a more crisp sound, so I'm going to blame my old beat up amp. Rest assured, you can get "chimes" or "bells" out of these.I would consider normal Strat pickups to be more blues, these pickups lean more towards rock, but still have what I would call the signature Strat twang. I think they fall between standard sound and a Fender desire to compete on thicker tone with the Les Paul. As someone whose first guitar was a Mexican Strat and loved it, but wanted a slightly meatier sound, these are perfect for me.

Incredible

I recently bought a new 2007 Fender Custom Shop Pro Closet Classic Stratocaster. It came from the factory stock with these pick ups. Unbelievably quiet! The tone is absolutely killer. They have that great strat tone and bite, with absolutely no hum. Best Fender pickup I have ever used to date.

I love these pickups

By PathologyRocker

from Stillwater, OK

I have a 2004 American Strat and was not happy with the hum. Since replacing the original pickups with these, my love of this guitar has risen greatly. I cannot tell that there is any loss of tone; in fact, I was trying to use noise suppressor pedal that cut deeply into the tone. So, I am very happy with this purchase.

The solution for fusion and Blues playing

By Jeff Whitacre

from Phoenix

The pick-ups which came as a pack were perfectly matched with very low ambient noise, correcting the hum by 98%. I was able to keep all the character of my picking and touch Phrasing and for sweeping it was superb. The innovation of these pick-ups has dramatically increase the beautiful tones that the Stratocater is able to produce in tact. I use different equipment ranging from in my home studio using a Pod XT pro Line 6 to a JMP1 pre amp, and it just were well. I'm pleased thats why I have taken the time to write a review.
