The Behringer Hell-Babe HB01 is unlike any wah you've ever stepped on, offering a tremendous array of tone-sculpting options. This demon's heel-down Range control provides low frequency adjustment that can be swept from 440 Hz down to 250 Hz, making the HB01 the ideal companion for either guitar or bass. For custom-tailoring the toe-down frequency range, the Hell-Babe features a Fine control, allowing you to adjust the frequency sweep as high as 2.2 kHz.

You can even dial in a powerful volume Boost (up to +15 dB), so that when you step on the HB01, your guitar will rise to the top of the mix. A highly versatile Q control is provided for precise filter shaping and for achieving vocal-like effects.

The Hell-Babe uses no mechanical pots or switches, which significantly reduces on wear and tear. It also features a spring-back pedal mechanism with resistance adjustment. And thanks to the ultra-bright LED indicators you'll always know when it's on and when the volume boost is activated. I am not a professional musician, but rather an amateur with a reasonable degree of experience with guitar plus a couple of other string instruments. For my purposes, the H'babe (I don't care for its name) fits the bill perfectly. I have compared it to my son's Dunlop Original Crybaby, and I much prefer the sound and flexibility of the Behringer. With its variety of broad- and fine-tuning knobs to adjust the responsiveness of the foot pedal, the 'Babe can be personalized to a player's individual needs and tastes, similarly to the more-advanced Crybaby models, though it is less expensive even than the Original. Its construction, though employing lower-cost outer materials than those of the Dunlops, certainly is not cheap. Heavy-duty plastic can be as strong and durable as steel if designed properly; this certainly is the case with the Behringer. For any guitar player with champagne taste but a beer budget, this may be the wah-wah to own.

Liked it a lot

I liked this better than the popular model that I replaced it with. The construction quality is poor. They need to charge a bit more for it and make it more durable.

Comments about Behringer Hellbabe HB01 Optical Wah Wah Pedal:

It is a great wah, not only for the price but also as a competetor against the crybaby. This is a copy of the crybaby from hell and it follows in its steps to a T. The sweep is lo though unless you mod it by taking the rubber stoppers on the end of the rocker and trim them about a half an inch. It allows the wah to sweep all the way when trimmed.

      Best Uses

Comments about Behringer Hellbabe HB01 Optical Wah Wah Pedal:

Let's get the cons out of the way first:

        a. The HB-01's housing is high-impact plastic, not metal.
        b. You have to mod it to get it to work properly.

        Pros:

The mods are easy to do:

        a. Cut down the rubber pads at the end of the pedal, so it has longer travel.
        b. Open the pedal, CAREFULLY enlarge the plectrum-shaped window in the cardboard light barrier JUST enough to ensure the pedal engages as soon as you step on it. (If you get over-enthusiastic, just open it back up and use a little black gaffer's tape to fine-tune the depth of the window.)

Once you've done those two mods, the HB-01 becomes the most flexible wah you'll ever buy new for under fifty beans. It features adjustments for the effect range, the filter shape, its width, the Q, and the amount of boost it applies to your signal. It lets you adjust the amount of time until the wah effect tails off after you take your foot off the pedal (the default value is perfect for me). And it sounds great!

Like the Morley Bad Horsie or the Dunlop Dimebag DB01, the Behringer HB-01 is an optical wah, so there's no rotating pot to corrode or break (Morley's patents on optical wah technology expired last century, so now any manufacturer is free to use it - and they all do now, because it kicks the stuffing out of the original, electro-mechanical tech).

Like the Bad Horsie and the Dimebag, the HB-01 features a return spring that flips the pedal back to the full heel-down position and shuts off the wah effect when you take your foot off. That's pretty convenient - except if you like to use a "cocked" wah as an envelope filter for tone purposes. If that's your jam, you're either going to have to buy an envelope filter pedal, too, or choose a different wah, because that's just not an option with this one. (Note that the same is true of the Bad Horsie and the Dimebag pedals.)

I bought the original Morley wah back in the 1980's and I loved that thing. This guy is a lot more flexible.

        Buy it. You'll like it.

        I do ...

Comments about Behringer Hellbabe HB01 Optical Wah Wah Pedal:

For the price, which is almost half of what it costs to get a Crybaby let alone the "Crybaby From Hell" which what this pedal is mimicking, it's perfect. I had the Dimebag wah 10 years ago and this year s pretty close. Is it exact.....no but good enough for someone on a budget and want that 535Q/Crybaby From Hell sound. All the controls are responsive. The toe up and toe down sounds are great. The only thing to get used to is the optical part where, what I sometimes like to do, with is leave the pedal in a certain position to get a tubey, toe up sound or a trebley toe down sound. But easy fix....just stay on the pedal to make the sound. Boost is alright.....if you like the sound of interference in between your transitions. Overall I would recommend to budget players as well as someone who's never seen played a wah to try this out to see if it's something that's for them.

Comments about Behringer Hellbabe HB01 Optical Wah Wah Pedal:

*Be forewarned, if you use the AC adapter instead of 9-volt battery, you will likely get RFI (radio frequency interference).*

This wah pedal is well-built but not as sturdy as it could be. The trade-off is a good light weight. The snap-back pedal to the up position takes getting used to. So does the kick-on noise when you step on the pedal to activate it. There are some really great sweep effects and functions you can read about in the product description. Used through a good amp, whether solid state like a Fender Mustang or tubes, this gives searing psychedelics and gentle tremolo-like waves.

Comments about Behringer Hellbabe HB01 Optical Wah Wah Pedal:

Great tone, solid build, fits well within my rig and allows for ease of use.

Only issue I have is the range of the wah. It clicks off too early and has a very short range no matter what settings are used.

I researched online and found ways guys are modding it to work better. It is a simple light adjustment which makes a world of difference. For the price especially this is a great buy even with the range issue. Just pop the bottom open and move the light as the videos suggest and you have great range and a very nice sound. I play it through my Marshall DSL and my Mustang V2.

Comments about Behringer Hellbabe HB01 Optical Wah Wah Pedal:

Bought this as a cheap replacement for a very old Cry Baby that gave up. Every parameter of the sweep is adjustable so you can replicate the sweep of many great wahs. This has a boost in it which is good, my Cry Baby had a bit of a volume drop when turned on. That being said, with the adjustable sweep the boost is unnecasary for my purposes. I use this pedal often. My favorite feature is its switchless. You simply put your foot on it, its on, take your foot off, its off. You can even adjust the time it takes to turn off after you remove your foot. If you take a few minutes to dial everything in to your liking this is a great pedal. The only thing that bothers me is the plastic case. Most wahs are built like tanks. This thing is light. If this pedal lasts half as long as my old Cry Baby(had it 20 years) i will be very happy. Great pedal for price.

It is easy to control and you can find your own unique sound quickly. (from standard to very expressive wah wah). The only problem I encountered was that from the factory initial setting the wah switches too suddenly to no wah effect when it's in the heal position. There is tiny knob in the bottom of the petal not so easy to access. I found it by taking off the bottom screws. I set it so that it takes longer for that switch to kick in.
It all work extremely well now.

the housing is too light weight for me...I guess its not fair to compare it to a morley I plan to spend more time with the controls but so far I haven't found a range that I can live with

Comments about Behringer Hellbabe HB01 Optical Wah Wah Pedal:

I plugges in the HELLBABE and when I pressed on the wah it started tuning in radio frequencies and the wah was extremely inferior to any other wah I posess. I have a Cry Baby 95Q that I bought from Musician's Friend and it is far more responsive and supperior to the Hellbabe...
I am totally disapointed in this product...
Although it is cheap, I didn,t get what I paid for.
