I bought this last night after comparing it against the Tube Screamer and Blues Driver. To my ears, the Blues driver sounded warmer than the Tube Screamer. I was going to buy it, but I tried the OS2 and found, in my opinion, the OS2 to have a much higher quality sound overall, a much wider variety of usable tones, and a wonderful warm sound. I have "tweeked" 5-6 different killer tones: a light, medium and heavy blues crunch; and a couple velvety-thick 60's Rock sounds, very Cream - "Disraeli Gears" sounding. My new American Deluxe Strat and '65 Deluxe Reverb reissue sound so clear, any crap pedal sounds like crap, and I had to disacard 3 pedals I was previously using. But this pedal sounds GREAT with my gear. AND IT'S CHEAPER THAN A BLUES DRIVER and less than a Tube Screamer! Try it!!! I was going to spend $200-300 on a Tube-based distortion pedal, but am totally impressed with this Boss pedal!

Do not buy this pedal if you want really heavy duty distortion, or really creamy tube-like overdrive. This box is mainly if you want something in the middle of the two above mentioned sounds. Overall, it sounds quite mechanical, digital even. The distortion with the top boost sounds kinda like ripping paper. The overdrive, however, is much better. For old style solos and things of that nature, it's a good value. For blues, it will work, but not excel. I would say that 80's pop overdrive/distortion is the most this thing can push. I've never had it break though, good solid construction. I, however, for metal or heavy rock, would buy a metal muff. For overdrive, I would prefer a tubescreamer. Yes, this pedal allows you to get two effects in one box, and I'm all for saving cash, but there is a reason that the tubescreamer has survived this long, even though the overdrive in this box is not terrible. Don't get it if you want a distortion pedal.

Comments about Boss OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I got this pedal for my birthday thinking "oh wow I can have an overdrive and a distortion all in one!" I plugged it into my amp and wow was I wrong. The distortion is weak even on the maximum setting and it's very muffled so it wasn't as good as I had hoped for. If you are going for Lynyrd Skynyrd or an AC/DC sound this pedal may be your route but as far as going to anything heavy you might wanna look at other options.

great pedal

Comments about Boss OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I bought this pedal to use as my main distortion pedal for my band. It is incredible! When you have the distortion on 7, it screams. If you like falling up, this pedal comes pretty close to their distortion. I recomend it for any one who doesnt like metal distortion and wants more than an overdrive.

Better than the DS-1

By Anonymous

Comments about Boss OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

Next to the tremendous success of the DS-1, SD-1 and Metal Zone this pedal usually gets over looked in the pleathora of Boss drive pedals. However it shouldn't. This is supossed to be a combination of the DS-1 and SD-1 but along the way Boss created something better. The special thing about this pedal is that it allows you to mix distortion and overdrive, or have just one or the other. Both extremes sound good but where this pedal truly shines is in the mixing. I tend to set it at about 75% distortion 25% overdrive to give me a great distortion that is clearer and works better on a tube amp than the DS-1. By switching the knobs around you can go from SRV sounds to early Metallica sounds. If you're looking strickly for an overdrive pedal you might want something else. Also this won't give you that total over the top Metal Zone sound but it can get you pretty close. Overal this gives you way better sound than the DS-1 so the little price difference it worth it.

NO....

Comments about Boss OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I own this pedal and have used it with both my VOX AC30 and orange AD30. Pretty much this pedal sucks really bad... It is awfully loud and buzzy and makes your beautiful tone sound like solid state crap. I would not recommend this pedal if you actually care about your guitar tone... if your just getting a cheap pedal to mess around with then I guess this will work... but if you need good tone for recording or serious playing do not buy this pedal...

Comments about Boss OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

This pedal is insanely versatile for the price. It can do everything from an edgy boost, overdrive, heavy crunch and driving distortion. It's one of the best Boss distortions I have heard. Surprisingly, it also works with bass.

On the other hand, I have had some signal issues, including buzzing and static (could just be my copy). The distortion is also outclassed by some other pedals - for example, my RAT sees far more use than this pedal.

I mostly use my OS2 for boost/overdrive and occasionally crunch sounds, and it works very well for that.

Good, unique sound!

By Anonymous

Comments about Boss OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I purchased this pedal from MF after listening to the sound clips on the Boss website, and it sounded like it would suit my needs. And when I plugged it into my Peavey Classic combo, I realized it does suit my needs. Basically, the pedal is deceiving in that it isn't 2 pedals in one, but sounds best as a mixture of the 2. Only overdrive is nice with a little gain, but it is extremely compressed, and the distortion only mode is super fuzzy. Setting the color to anywhere between 9o'clock and 3o'clock will give you delight for a few hours b/c you can mess around and find some super unique sounding overdrive/distortion tones, which was exactly what I was looking for.

Comments about Boss OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

This is a good pedal for the money. It has a very versitile sound. I play in a youth worship band and I play in a rock band. This pedal has the warm tone soft dist. I need for worship, yet with a couple turns of the nob I've got a hard distortion. If you dont tweek your amp of the pedal right you will get a whiney sound. Boss stompboxes are the best.(besisdes the tubescreamer from ibenaz)

Comments about Boss OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

Well, I'm into heavy stuff, and I've been playin my mesa dual rec on stage and in the studio for a while now. This is pedal is wat ive been using to boost my gain and crunchy chugs. Mixed with my mesa, sounds like Killswitch/ Devin Townsend distortion. Not too bad of a pedal, there are better options but this isnt too bad off a choice.

It's a good pedal for its price, and when going through a good amp. But I think if you have the money you should get either the Boss Turbo Distortion or the Pro-Co Rat.

Comments about Boss OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

This was the first OD/distortion pedal I ever bought. It's really versatile. The OD sounds a bit like a TS9, but not as warm, and has way more gain. The distortion sounds like a DS1, but darker and with more bottom end. If you can only buy one pedal, I would get this just cuz it's very versatile. Sounds good through a tube amp cranked up. It probably would sound pretty bad through a SS amp, but everything does IMO.

Comments about Boss OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I will start by saying this is my first pedal. After tweaking my pod 2.0 and my amp I have found a tone that is awesome. It creates a very nice tone perfect for rock. If this one is stolen or breakes I will buy another one in a heartbeat. +

Comments about Boss OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I bought this pedal solely because of the sound of John's guitar in dani california. I use this pedal with a '62 reissiue strat through a fender pro jr. Through my ears, it's the greatest distortion sound i've ever created. I love this pedal to death. The "turbo" knob really does exactly what you would think it would; puts your guitar into turbo distortion mode.

Boss OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion

By ZAMBOthesnowman

Comments about Boss OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I have been searching for a pedal that would give nice crunch without the fuzz of distortion. This pedal is CERTAINLY it! It gives the 65 deluxe I use some extra growl while providing SUPERB crunch. I am able to get a nice vintage sound and am very pleased with how clear each note rings out for being distorted. A gain knob would be nice, but for the price this baby is a steal!

Confused Acoustic Player

By Acoustic gone Electric

Comments about Boss OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I've been playing acoustic for 25 years and added electric the last 4 or 5. I've been missing out on some fun! I bought a tube amp but wanted more "growl". What does that mean anyway? Tried to figure out if I needed to buy an overdirve unit or distortion pedal. I got the OS2, saved some money and am having fun. Worst case is you find out you're a purist and add a TS in the future (for your tube amp only) and just use the OS2 for distortion. I plugged mine in, breifly made some adjustments, and grinned ear to ear!

Comments about Boss OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I am thoroughly impressed with this pedal! I dialed in a half-and-half overdrive/distortion sound, and I was blown away! It's the sound I've wanted for a long time! Using a Schecter C-1 Classic and a Fender Pro Junior, I had a wonderful sound for solos and rhythm. I will definitely purchase one in the near future.

Comments about Boss OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

This Pedal really saved me, I play a Fender Tele, and I use a hot rod deluxe amp, the clean channel is amazing, but the drive channels don;t really work for the single coil tele. I bought the OS-2 and it created the most perfect balance of overdrive and distortion, and you can udjust every drop of your sound with these 4 knobs. I would reccomend it to anyone.

This is a great pedal for people you like metal and so on. I only had it one day but that is all it takes to like this product. The ony thing I would change about the product is if it came in a different color.
