OVERVIEW

Transform any guitar rig into a rig of doom with the Sabbra Cadabra.

The Sabbra Cadabra is a custom-tuned Rangemaster-based booster combined with the pre-amp section of a Laney Supergroup. The two circuits are carefully voiced together to achieve the riffs of doom tone that Tony Iommi is so well known for. Four controls (RANGE, GAIN, PRESENCE, and VOL 4) allow you to fine-tune the response to your guitar and rig. If you'e familiar with Sabbath' live album, ˜Past Lives™, then you™ll understand where Catalinbread were going with this pedal - huge, raw, responsive!

The Sabbra Cadabra' circuit is optimized for drop-tuning but works equally well for standard tuning thanks to the RANGE control, which allows you to œcustomize the treble-booster section of the circuit and adjust it anywhere from treble-boost to full-range boost. According to Mr. Iommi, someone modded his Dallas Rangemaster. Based on their experience, it was most likely changing it to be more of a full-range boost and possibly re-biasing it. That' what's meant by a œcustomizable treble-boost section with the RANGE knob - you can continuously adjust it to any input frequency response and feel that you want.

The Sabbra Cadabra was designed to give players that sonic experience, re-contextualized for today' approach where players tend to use amps solely within their clean range at more mortal volume levels.

I've been looking for that perfect Black Sabbath tone since seeing them in 1974. This pedal gets the job done and hands down blows away the 15w Laney effort. Save yourself the cash and just plug this thing into your current amp. Sounds best when the amp has some headroom and really shines with vintage single coils, P90's or strat. The nice thing is you can really get some great tone without disturbing the neighbors or blowing out your eardrums, whichever comes first. I opened it up just to make sure Tony wasn't in there.

Many folks have recommended Catalinbread pedals across the communities I encounter. I have watched many of their demo videos and have always been thoroughly impressed. Most recently I came across their demo video for the Sabbra Cadabra pedal and I was blown away. I'm a huge Tony Iommmi fan and I really enjoy his tone. It also turns out their demo setup was almost identical to my setup (They played an LPJ with P90s through a Fender Princeton - I play an ES-339 with P90s through a Fender Deluxe). I was prepared to order one online based on the demo video alone but fortunately I found a local store that had one in stock. I spent thirty minutes with it earlier today (and the Catalin RAH pedal) and here are my thoughts:

I picked up a Gibson Les Paul Junior with P90s and plugged the Sabbra Cadabra into the front of a Fender Deluxe. I plugged into the Vibrato channel of the Deluxe with Treble and Bass at 6, Reverb at 2, Vibrato Speed/intensity at 1, volume at ~3-4. I set all controls on the Sabbra Cadabra to 12 o'clock to start.

With all pedal controls at 12 there was certainly a distinctive tone shift and volume boost when activating the pedal. My initial impression was very muddy and fuzzy, but I figured I needed to do some tweaking at this point.

This is where my confusion set in - there was such a small margin of error to achieve a good sound with this pedal. At one point I finally stumbled into a 'mediocre' sound, but every other setting I dialed in was just extremely underwhelming based on the hype and price tag. I was extremely disappointed because the demo videos for this pedal imply this pedal is a monster of tone, but I felt competitor pedals at half the price do much better. I even tried switching to lower wattage amps to give the pedal the benefit of the doubt to push some more volume (I really WANTED to love it).

Save your money and look elsewhere, there are better ODs at half the price and better Fuzzes at half the price, this does neither well.

Comments about Catalinbread Sabbra Cadabra Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I won't say that I suddenly found that I was taken over by the spirit of Tony, but it does have some of the same tones that I hear coming from him. If you watch any of the videos out there about this pedal, you can clearly hear the extra noise that is produced when the pedal is on. I don't mind this, but some may find it distracting.
I personally think this is a good distortion pedal, but it probably won't be the only one to own for most, it is a good addition to the kit for anyone who wants to rock. It did not play well with my other pedals at first, I spent quite a bit of time trying it in different positions in the chain.

Comments about Catalinbread Sabbra Cadabra Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I bought this in June of 2015 and I love it for not only Sabbath tones but just a general overdrive pedal with or without a tubescreamer before it, boosting it. I like the gain low & the Range & Presence high! The Range control is where the magic is! Crank up the Range knob to get Tony Iommi to come out of this pedal & show you how it's done! He used a Dallas Rangemaster treble booster to get that fuzzy, pointy, almost uncontrollable loud and in your face tone that we've all tried to emulate forever! And this pedal has that treble booster circuit under the "Range" knob! It's so loud that I keep the pedal's volume knob around a quarter of the way up, and the volume knob is labeled VOL.4 ,how awesome is that? Use this pedal at your own risk!

Comments about Catalinbread Sabbra Cadabra Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I have a Laney amp and this pedal (which is designed to mimic a Laney preamp) is all that and more. It has the unique quality of being very clear even on chords like augmented 5ths that usually throw heavier dirt pedals off. Some pedals sound better in the high range than low ot vis versa but much like Iommi's sound, this one screams in every range. I wish the jacks were top mounted (though I could say that about most pedals.) I was a bit disappointed with the treblebooster function. It does alter the tone but not much. On the whole though, a great pedal if you want something compact that rocks.

It's a Christmas gift for my youngest son - he hasn't picked it up yet. I tried it out - it sounds good - nothing wrong here. Probably the right guitar, etc., is important. Probably needs a little more girth to hit it, maybe just play with the amp a little louder.

            • Sounding like Tony Iommi

Comments about Catalinbread Sabbra Cadabra Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

Plug this into your amp's clean channel and get ready for the hair on the back of your neck to stand up, you'll sound that much like Tony Iommi during the golden years of Sabbath with Ozzy.

For that, this pedal is unbelievable. If you're into Sabbath, you'll get lost in this thing. The real magic is in the "Range" knob...set everything else at about 12 o'clock, and just keep rolling the "Range" knob up until you become Tony Iommi.

I've never heard a better "sounds like" pedal in my life. I never even heard a modeling amp do Iommi like this. If you're curious what state of the art "sounds like" pedals can do, this is the one to try. Unbelievable. Make sure and check out the Catalinbread video I posted and close your eyes.

If you play guitar but don't own this pedal, you're not a Black Sabbath fan. And that's Ok. But if you're a Black Sabbath fan, you'll own this pedal, or you're about to buy this pedal, because if you don't, I'll show up in the other band at your gig and sound more like Tony Iommi than you :o)

            It's that good.

Comments about Catalinbread Sabbra Cadabra Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

This thing can sound pretty close to Iommi's tone. But it's not an Overdrive. It's Distortion and more. This goes beyond that and into sludgey death metal or stoner metal. It gets nasty with a fuzz breakup that sounds like it's going to destroy itself! If you are strictly after a Sabbath tone then you should try this out first. For me it's sounds similar but when you stop playing just Sabbath a try brutal thick stuff it's almost too much. I haven't even had the need to bring the gain above 1 o'clock.

I use a Boss MS-3 switcher with a Friedman OB-OD, Lovepedal Kalamazoo gold, and the Cadabra into a Laney 30w El84 class A/B combo mainly. Although the OB-OD goes into full bore metal, the Sabbra Cadabra has a different more scratching fuzz tearing sound. It particularly comes in handy when switching between Rhythm and Lead or verse to chorus.

I bought this just to try it because Sabbath was one of my main influences early on. But I fell in love and will definitely be keeping this.

I almost don't want to recommend this so others don't use this tone too. Lol.

Comments about Catalinbread Sabbra Cadabra Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

Really like this pedal. I get a very good heavy sound with my amp already but I had to get this just because of what it is. I am a big fan of Tony Iommi and also have his signature custom SG. This guitar has awesome tone anyway, but this pedal is very fun to play with. I also get that Sabbath sound by hooking up my other guitars to Sabbra Cadabra as well. The best way to use this is play it through your clean channel with reverb, preferably plate reverb as that is what they used back in the early 70's. Though you can use hall or spring reverb if you prefer. Then just tweak the knobs till you get the sound you like but the Sabbath sounds are in there. The range control allows for different tuning as well. Really great!
