I purchased the Profiler 5 as a "PERSONAL" amp; which is what I believe the amp was designed for. It is not intended to be a full featured powerhouse that can keep up with a band. I wanted something that I could grab, plug into and (without stringing power cords or power strips) lounge back in one of my recliners in my family room and noodle to my hearts content. And I didn't want to be forced into putting on earbuds either. I considered all of the headphone amps out there, but again, you have to wear earphones to use them as they have no speakers or power amps. I just wanted a grab-it and play "all-in-one" unit that would make spontaneous noodling less of a bother. This unit is very well designed. It is the only unit of its kind that has separate Delay and Reverb and Effects. Yes, they are all separate and can be layered together!! Other than the Zoom G-units (which are strictly "headphone" amps....they have no internal amps or speakers), no other small battery powered small personal amp offers these effects separately. With most of them you can get reverb OR delay, but not both together. Kudos to the guys at Crate! Well done. The presets are non-adjustable. However they have been very intelligently chosen. The preset amounts and levels work very well! The single "tone" control could also offer a broader sweep, but that is just a personal quibble. As it is, it will do.

This box sounds like everything that was wrong with modeling... ten years ago. This is true going through the speaker or through the headphone output. The clean tones are flat and lifeless; the crunch to high gain tones are muddy, mid-heavy messes. The model presets load up on effects to cover up the tones' deficiencies. The unit hisses incessantly and obnoxiously when on. You can hear the noise-gating sucking your sustain away. For the price, it felt like a no-lose proposition... but after thirty minutes of use I decided I was better off with my Smokey Amp running through my 1x12. The Smokey only does 1.5 sounds, but at least it does them quite well. I have played through any number of el cheapo SS practice amps that also were more satisfying to play through than the Profiler. In the Crate's defense, however, I *will* say that the auto-wah was pretty decent.

Come on, it's a practice amp!

I played the roland cube and it was good. Played the line six and it worked. The crate came at a great price with a few usable effects for solo practice. It works for me. If I need big sound, guess what? I use a a bigger amp, stomp boxes etc. You people knew what you were buying when you purchased this amp! And obviously if there are defected units that's a legitimate concern! Geez I'm glad I'm over 50. I don't worry about these things anymore.....turn on the amp and play!

great little amp !!!

By lamadom

from portland,or

A great amp for the price of a stomp box. This is a personal amp, not for jamming with the band, but you could mike it thru the PA and be fine. You get software and a USB port, again worth the price of the amp. Great for camping, picnics... a no brainer buy!!!

The little amp that could!

By Rolls

from Northern Cal.

I picked this up on sale for $50 and due to a back injury had to let it set for just over a year, (when I finally came home from a three level fusion). When I started to feel a little bit better, I decided it was time to take it out of the box. First I noticed horrible buzzing when playing it, but finally realized that it was the battery cover that I had never installed any batteries causing the buzz.I just took the battery cover off and end of buzz. However, I still was not excited about the very cheap speakers, (two 4" speakers). Since it was over a year I could not just return it. But, I searched on-line and found some better speakers for it, (Visonik model VP4063S) What a difference they made and they only cost me a total of $23 including the shipping. Now when I have a good day, I am enjoying playing once again, and although I have a very nice Fender and vintage Gibson, I am having more fun with this tiny little amp that I bought just as an amp that I could bring with me on overnight travels or get aways. It does so many things in a very small foot print and equals the sound of other amps that cost up to $200 or more. And it fits in my suitcase!

sounds good when it works...

By Patrick-9rvnH

from Chatta-freakin-nooga, TN

I purchased this little sucker a few weeks ago wanting a cheap alternative to wearing headphones all the time with my pedal. I took it home, stoked, played for a while, still stoked since it sounded great, tone and all, then I picked it up a little later and it cut out after a minute or two without static or any type of warning. I may try another one to see if it works out, if not I may try one of those mini vox's I've seen!

Crate Profiler 5

By R.W.

This is an awesome little amp and it sounds great. For the money you pay it cant believe what you get. The included software is great too. Shocking how cheap electronics are getting that this little guy has so much for so little. The only downer is it seems to not remember the settings sometime. I set it for a short repeat and when I come back to the profile is is a long repeat. Not a big issue. Get one if you can!

Disappointing!

Ok- it was this, the VOX DA5 or the MicroCube. This Crate Profiler is going back!It has poor sound (poorer with a ipod in the aux input) and it kept cutting off on me and needed a off/on to "re-boot". Went out and got the Vox DA5 and WOW!-- what a difference! Crate- nice try- I have the BT15 and it's a solid small form bass amp- but this one did not deliver.Sound is muffled/distant/lacks dimension (and its a stereo mini amp!). My guess is 4 inch speakers just don't work (the Vox has one 6.5 inch speaker).

If you have bucks burnin' a hole in your pocket

By telelover-3fZtf

from Undisclosed

Got this little amp last week. I was skeptical at first, but needed something to take on vacation when all I want to haul is a guitar, a cable and a small amp. I was torn between the DA-5 and the Microcube, but when I stumbled on this thing, I couldn't resist. Sounds okay for a small amp, it does tend to rattle at higher volumes. Having a seperate delay and reverb from the other FX was a brilliant touch. The medium gain profiles sound really really good. Don't expect it to sound like something bigger, and you'll be satisfied.

Crate Profiler 5 Guitar Combo Amp

Wow... I can't belive the quality of this amp... The quality of the effects is outstanding. For a tiny price, you can get reverb, chorus, delay... everything. The effects are super smooth. The only bad thing is the distortion, it's not very transparent, but it sounds HUGE. Notes kinda get garbled up, but it'll do. Also, if you let notes sustain, they just die off, but only after a while. But for the price, fantastic. Plus portability!

Get Real

By Kiiv

from The Boonies

Just wanted to set a few things straight. I've been playing with this thing consistently for four days now and havent the slightest complaint about quality of sound, tone, effects processors, or controls of the amp. Independent delay and reverb separate from the other fx is unheard of at amps costing ten times as much. The chorus is brilliant thanks to two speakers. Remember the DSP that also stores your previous settings too so you can recall them later. Pretty much all bad reviews I've read come from the "less inclined". Seriously it's the best amp in this price range PERIOD. Plus one of the best small practice amps I've used ever. No it won't work for playing shows and no it wont sound like a $$$$ tube head and no the effects wont be the most sought after in digital history, but if you thought that was all true when purchasing, the problems with you and not the amp. Oh and as far as it breaking, theres a five year guarantee except for the speakers which are only a two year guarantee like all crate products. BUY IT!

Pretty Good Amp for the Cost

By SG_FAN

from Dallas, TX

This is a GREAT PRACTICE amp. If you want to practice, but don't want to wake everyone in the house this is the one for you. It's not the best amp that I own, but it is a Great value... It's portable and the effects are servicable. I actually bought it for my son to play in his room with headphones. By the way, the headphone feature is really the best that I've heard. It's also easy for him to take it to his guitar lessons, though I think I play it more than he does. If you're looking for an amp to gig with, this is NOT it. If you're looking for something really lound and clear, this is NOT it. But it's a fun little amp to practice with and a great value.

Great amp if you get one that works

Like others who have reviewed this amp, mine cuts out and needs to be turned off and back on to continue playing. I love the fact that it has a USB connector. The effects are great and it sounds terrific for the price and size. Too bad it doesn't work.

good value, good sound, & cheap recording soultion

By GibsonLPRocker

from Carey, ID

Ok here's the deal--you can't find a better little amp like the Crate Profiler 5 anywhere--and the price makes it even better! It's got a ton of features and some pretty good amp profiles. To top it off it's even got a usb port on the back so you can plug it in to your computer and record. It also has some pretty nice recording/mixing software with it! Don't hesitate to buy this guy if you are looking for a little practice amp (with surprisingly loud sound) and/or an inexpensive recording solution. I do wish there was a level knob for the effects and a 3-band eq instead of just a tone knob, but those are small complaints! I've never had problems with Crate products in the past (I own a 100w bass amp & a 120w guitar amp) and it seems this little guy will last a long time. This is a great deal with great tone and features!

A lot of features in a practice amp

The profiles are pretty good overall, and having two speakers makes the chorus come alive. Good control over the distortion and gain. Having the ability to adjust the reverb is huge plus also. I also like the ability to plug my mp3 player in the back and play along.I would definitely recommend this practice amp.

Not happy with this one

This amp sounds bad on pretty much all channels. The clean channels aren't clean. The effects are hard to select. I often think I'm on a different effect than I am. On some channels, I can't even tell when the reverb is on or off. It's not loud, but that's to be expected. If I had to do it over again, I'd probably pick up the Marshall MG10, or the Crate Flexwave 15.On the plus side, the power adapter that came with this also works with my boss pedals

Sweet Deal

I don't really have any need for a practice amp, because I use my jam amp most of the time. But this is awesome because of the recording software you get with it, although it might not be the best, you can still do tons of stuff with just a few track. See I'm more of a drummer than a guitarist and my friends come over to jam a lot but when I play by myself I wish I could record, to have something to play to or just something to do period. And even a single track of guitar would be a lot of fun to play to.

Good Pratice and Recording Amp

By goodgravy13

from California

I have enjoyed owning this amp. It was great for bedroom use and recording onto the computer. Their are some drawbacks. Underpowered and it gets bad vibrations when volume knob is above 5 esp. on the high gain settings. I also wish you could eq settings to adjust. I have noted people have complained about the fact it shuts off sound. This is a feature that allows power conservation. Yes, it can be a pain in the butt, but Ive experienced that only happens when it is not being used for short periods of time. Overall, it was a pretty decent amp.

Great little amp!

By FutileRecordings

So I had a new guitar student yesterday, a 10 year old boy who loves Black Sabbath and AC/DC. His parents bought him a little Flying V copy, and this amp. I decided to plug my Ibanez into the amp to show him the various controls and what they do. Let me say, I was absolutely blown away by the sound of this amp. For $50, I can't see it getting any better than this. The tones were actually GOOD, not just adequate. The high-gain settings in particular are outstanding. I think this amp would be a perfect fit for beginners, or anyone who wants a small practice amp for little money. Crate has always impressed me with their products, and this unit is no exception.

Is Crate Profiler 5 the perfect small portable amp

By GregInTheCanyon

from CO

See all my reviews

Crate Profiler 5 - In general, and at first, I loved this amp. It's hard to find a small, portable, battery-powered amp that also has effects, and the design of this unit is great. I was able to use the 'profile' feature to setup enough different combinations that I haven't had to change them much since. Unfortunately, mine has been cutting out. After playing for a while, sometimes a lot and sometimes just a few minutes, it cuts out. I still hear the amp itself, but the signal doesn't make it through. As soon as I turn it off and on again it works, but of course that's not a great feature for a guitar amp. I'm in the process of hopefully getting mine fixed. If this ends up being a reliable amp I love it, but if it doesn't than it's low reliable out weighs the great features, size and portability.
