OVERVIEW

The perfect pedal for the heavy riff shredder.

In this aptly named box you'll find a huge range of killer high gain tones. From crisp, mid-driven '80s metal, to scooped, modern down-tuned brutality, this little box of sonic mayhem does it all.

The two independent channels can be voiced similarly so that one channel can be used as a solo boost, or they can be voiced entirely differently by using the mid-range control in conjunction with the 3-position mid-frequency select switch. Add in separate weight controls to shape the low end response of each channel, and a global hi/low eq section that allows you to fine tune your particular amp and cab combination, and you've got a serious tool to create a supremely heavy sounding rig.

On top of all this Empress added an extremely responsive and hassle-free noise gate that will ensure dead silent operation with even the most obscene amounts of gain added.

FEATURES
  • All Analog Signal Path - no digitals in here
  • Super High Gain - It's called the heavy, what'd you expect?
  • Weight - An intuitive new control that changes the character of your low end
  • 3 Band EQ - Selectable mid frequency lets you get precise EQ curves, with boost or cut up to 10dB per band
  • Dual Channel Design - Heavy and Heavier let you set your channels similarly, for rhythm/solo, or completely differently for a wider range of tones
  • Soft Touch Switches - Relay bypass and intelligent switching make this pedal super easy to use
  • Noise Gate - Natural and aggressive settings let you tailor the gate to your needs, keeping noise out of your signal chain
  • True Bypass - The Empress Heavy employs true bypass, so you can be sure that it's not affecting the signal when disengaged
  • Small Size - The enclosure measures approximately 4.5" by 3.5" by 1.5", which is delightfully small when considering all the features packed into this unit

Comments about Empress Effects Heavy Dual-Channel Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

The empress heavy reminds me of the type of crunch that typically comes with a tube amp. I would say that this pedal even gives some tube amps a run for their money in the crunch and tweak-ability factor. It sounds great with my crate 4x12 cab with it's stock speakers, but sounded absolutely mean coming through a friend's Randall RD212-V30 combo which has Celestion Vintage 30 speakers.

I think the coolest features of this pedal are the mid frequency switches, and the weight nob. I wanted a pedal that would allow me to boost my mids and still sound heavy, and this pedal does it for me. But I really like being able to adjust my bottom end sound. I can make it super tight, or pretty sludgy. (Wish it would go just a little sludgier though) The pedal has a built in noise gate, and it does what I expected. The noise gate will slightly effect the tone of the pedal if used, but it's pretty negligible.

There are only two things about this pedal that are keeping me from giving it a 5 out of 5. Number 1. I want more gain/distortion out of it. It's not like you'd mistake it for a blues pedal or anything with the gain maxed out, make no mistake, this is a metal pedal. But more gain would be awesome. I might even put a tube screamer in front of it to see how it sounds. Number 2. The "heavier" channel on this pedal does not actually sound any heavier to me. All in all, it's still an awesome pedal.

I think for this pedal to really shine you're going to want active pick ups to push the gain as far as possible, and a cab/combo with high end speakers to push all of the bite. I would consider this to be a stand alone pedal to be ran through a clean channel on your amp. I wouldn't run it through a gain channel to boost it.

I would recommend this pedal to any one who has a solid state amp who wants a tube amp style crunch for metal. If you want an old school metallica tone, or a deathklok tone, this might work well for you.

Comments about Empress Effects Heavy Dual-Channel Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I bought this pedal because the distortion built into my head really just kinda sucked. So i decided to experiment with pedals and ended up getting a mxr fullbore metal pedal and that thing had no balls.. when i got this IMMEDIATELY i was impressed! Built like a tank and could take a beating.. if you're a metal musician looking to find a distortion pedal with BALLS this is your pedal!
