Hand-wired, classic tube sound from across the pond.

From the HiWatt Class A Custom shop, a 7-watt guitar amp head featuring the legendary English hand-wired construction of Hiwatt's Classic Series. The Custom 7 Tube Guitar Amp Head, designed specifically for the home and studio environments. Provides the famous Hiwatt sound in a scaled down format. Using a Single-ended output stage with two ECC-83's and one EL-84 together, giving this amp some serious tone and sustain at decent volumes! Featuring Master Volume control, individual Gain, Bass, Mid and Treble controls, High and Low inputs.

A look inside the amplifier will reveal point- to-point hand wiring, turret tag boards (no printed circuits), and hand laced wiring harnesses. The power and output transformers are manufactured by Partridge, the original 1970's supplier to the original design sheets. The components and wires are the modern available equivalents of the vintage components, 1-watt carbon resistors, and wound polyester capacitors being used throughout.

Check the drop-down menu to the right to select colors and/or other options.

Comments about Hiwatt Custom 7 7w Tube Guitar Amp Head:

At 7 watts, this is a good studio or practice amp but too under-powered for a full rock band setting (unless of course you mic the cab). The custom 7 is dead quiet at idle, only giving up the tiniest bit of hiss with all knobs cranked. I found the tone with my Strat to be clear and articulate with a nice bottom end when run through a 4x10 fender cabinet. My review is only for the pull boost version of the Custom 7.
P.S. I recently bought the Custom 20 and couldn't be happier.
There are two versions of the hand-wired custom one with a mid control knob (as pictured) and the other without but with a pull boost on the gain knob. I'm not a fan of the pull boost knob version. Firstly, the chicken head knob is not the easiest to pull out and, when you finally do pop it out, the circuit adds a fuzz tone rather than tube crunch. Maybe it's just me but I'd rather have hand-wired tube crunchy distortion than a fuzz tone you could get from any decent pedal.
Also, the custom 7 with the pull boost can only be used with cabinets 8 or 16 ohms. The 7 with the mid knob has an impedance selector on the back panel so it can power a 4,8, or 16 ohm cab.
Excellent build quality. Hand-wiring is immacculate, vinyl upholstery and piping all what you'd expect from a boutique amp. Control knobs are solid and turn smoothly. The british made transformers say "Partridge designed". I'm not sure if that means made by Partridge or made elsewhere with Partridge specs.
