OVERVIEW

A noise gate that kills your amp's buzz, not your tone.

Sentry Noise Gate is your gateway to a noise-free and fully dynamic performance. Its cutting-edge multiband technology is set to cater to all of your hum and buzz-killing needs and with its highly intuitive design, you'll be dialing out that unwanted noise faster than an Yngwie Malmsteen arpeggio lick. Although extremely simple to use, Sentry Noise Gate's technology is based on the same algorithms as featured in System 6000; TC’s definitive studio processing powerhouse. The pedal also features a classic hard-gate mode along with a loop Send/Return for silencing noisy pedals/amps all without cutting out dynamics or feel. This can even be used for creative sidechaining, so the gate can be in precise sync with other signals.

Take control and enjoy the silence!

You're Hum Free
Sentry Noise Gate's multiband technology houses one of the most advanced noise-removal algorithms to date. This enables you to hone in on very specific frequencies and quickly remove extraneous noise from your signal as you stop playing, without any compromise to your core tone. The result? The most seamless and organic noise reduction you've ever heard. In this mode, Sentry Noise Gate is like the air we breathe. You don't notice it's there but you can't live without it!

Silent As The Grave
Sentry Noise Gate also features a classic hard-gate mode, which can be used for an immediate noise-cut effect. Go from a full-on sonic barrage to dead silence in an instant, only to let your epic riff re-emerge from the stillness and strike the unsuspecting crowd with unprecedented force. With Sentry Noise Gate, your riff-writing will forever ring with monstrous grandeur!

TonePrint: Reshape That Gate
For all of you tone tweakers and sonic explorers, this is where the magic's at! Via the free TonePrint Editor you can tweak your personal gate with exceptional precision, so it perfectly interacts with your setup and your needs. On top of that, you can also load custom-made settings created by some of the biggest names within the world of rock with the free TonePrint App, giving you access to the tones that the pros prefer. I bought five different noise gates to compare (details below). I have a few of single-coil guitars (one with P90's) and I needed something serious. The TC's Sentry was the best of the lot and the only one that addressed everything I desired:

1. quick engagement when starting to play, even when the starting note is subtle (as opposed to losing the beginning of the note) [PASSED]
2. clean cut off of sound when playing halts abruptly [PASSED]
3. clean cut off of sound when a note or chord fades out [PASSED]
4. not altering the guitar's tone [PASSED] (tested by clicking the unit on and off while playing)
5. elimination of noise in the background that would otherwise be audible while playing individual notes, "scrubbing" 60 cycle humming and buzzing [PASSED]

My source of noise is my guitars, so I've gotten my best results having the Sentry at the very start of my pedal chain. In order to get 5 to pass, it was imperative I had the three-position switch in its "hiss" position. I have had great success with the Decay knob in its lowest counter-clockwise position. The Damp knob I've had close to it's lowest counter-clockwise position. The appropriate setting for Threshold is going to depend on the level of noise in your signal. In my case, it sits around 1:30.

These were the weaknesses I found with the other pedals:

Behringer NR300 Noise Reducer [FAILED test 2]
Electro-Harmonix Silencer Noise Gate [couldn't get it to pass 1 without failing in others, no "sweet spot"]
Electro-Harmonix Hum Debugger [very impressive, but FAILED test 4]
Rocktron Guitar Silencer [very competitive, although hard to get it to pass both 5 and 4 at the same time]

Maybe it's the inherent nature of noise gates, but I bought and returned this pedal because it was a tone drainer.

Comments about TC Electronic Sentry Noise Gate Guitar Pedal:

I play a Bogner Uberschall Twin Jet and while the gain tones are great, my rig is certainly susceptible to unwanted noise, so I figured a noisegate would be a good decision if I was to continue honing my recording quality. I initially really wanted an ISP Decimator because of the plethora of favorable reviews on it, but I ultimately decided on the Sentry for two reasons:

    1. I wanted to try something different
    2. The price was just right

My gamble paid off because I can't see myself without this awesome noisegate. Once you dial it in to fit your rig, the amount of unwanted noise it cuts out of your rig is unheard of, all while preserving the integrity of your tone. The Sentry also comes with the Toneprints feature, allowing you to beam into the pedal via a USB cable or a phone app different settings with adjustable parameters allowing for a lot of custom options, though I haven't used that feature yet since the factory default parameters really nailed it on the first try.

I will say that if you are switching between humbucker and single coil guitars you will need to adjust the threshold on the pedal since the outputs for each respective type of pickup will affect how much of your signal will be gated; if the threshold on the pedal is too low, it may eat some signal, but the sweep on the threshold knob is so large that you could most likely find the sweet spot for your guitar's output fairly readily.

All in all, its a great pedal that really opened my eyes to the quality of products TC Electronics is putting out. You don't need to break your bank for a great noisegate!

Comments about TC Electronic Sentry Noise Gate Guitar Pedal:

This pedal does exactly what i got it for. Noise suppression for a vintage keyboard, and as a tool for producing tracks using side chain compression. It does both very well. The controls are simple and intuitive.
I have never done any side chain stuff before but it was super easy, and I got some nice pulsating pads that were right in time with the track.
Fits well on the pedal board, uses standard power, and it's sturdy. What more can one say? I like it.

Plugged it in at the end of my pedal board chain - dialed in a low threshold and the annoying High Frequency buzz from Studio Light dimmers was gone. No degradation on signal quality. Clean up my rig and enables excellent recording in the Studio.

Comments about TC Electronic Sentry Noise Gate Guitar Pedal:

Built new pedal board and added the Sentry based on great musician reviews. WOW! Amazing noise gate - but it is so much more than that! My high gain settings are whisper quiet now. Hardly did any "tweaking"! Looped 3 OD & distortion pedals and a very noisy compressor in the Sentry's effect loop (send & return), dialed the knobs at about 12:00, and BAM, no more hiss or noisy pedals! Tried playing around with the settings but the Sentry was darn near perfect, right out of the box.

I bought this on my personal experience with other TC Electronic products. Well built, quiet, easy to use, and their customer service is fantastic!

Comments about TC Electronic Sentry Noise Gate Guitar Pedal:

I ordered this pedal just to keep my rig's sound nice and clean, not really being sure if I would even keep it. It is now one of my top pedals. It's transparent, effective, and very versatile. The loop feature is my favorite: I run my guitar straight into the Sentry Input, then run my Wah, POG, three TC gain pedals and compressor through the Send/Return on the Sentry, then connect the Sentry's Output to my amp's input. Like the videos say, you can really lower the threshold far in this configuration.

Important instructions! At least what I did, and I couldn't be happier: I don't play metal or much high gain, but I do use all three of TC's boost/OD/DS pedals, so when they're all on, I definitely get some hiss. To set my Sentry, I put the switch to "Hiss", turned on all my gain pedals, then turned the threshold knob clockwise and stopped JUST before the hiss came through, then did the same thing with the "Damp", but counter-clockwise with it (idk why it's set up like that). I keep "Decay" maxed out clockwise for the best sustain. This configuration gives you a nice light gate, that immediately gets out of the way when your guitar makes any sound at all, but silences the hiss when you're not playing. Yeah, the gate affects your sustain a little, but every gate does that, and my wiring and knob configuration gives a surprising amount of sustain considering I'm using a gate pedal.

In conclusion, I love it, and I would immediately replace it. TC just keeps knocking pedals out of the park at sub-boutique prices. It's why I have 9 of their pedals, and love them all.
